Nevermind, will buy.

Same here. Buying sight unseen, I highly doubt any of these is a dud. I don't really need any of these per se, but that never stopped me before.  ;D
Ten more days! I wish we could get BOMs for these ahead of time, Xmas mailing season is always the worst time to stock up on missing parts...

Only one has SMD - and I've seen a few folks using usb microscopes for doing them. Time to order that fine point conical tip!

At first I was thinking that I didn't really need any of these, then I thought about how many boards I've etched for free because the Bean has been so generous in sharing his designs. Even if I never build them (which I will of course) I still need to support this as a show of appreciation. Thanks Brian for all you've given to us.

I did the Fuzz Face side of the fundraiser board without a magnifier or microscope. I didn't even use a flux pen. Just a fine tip and a very conservative application of solder.

I'm really not intimidated by SMD, no, really, I'm not....... OK, I AM!  ::) It's just that I was really kinda proud of mastering this soldering stuff in the first place. I still remember when my first boards and parts came in I thought "DAMN! This stuff is really, REALLY SMALL!!!" And that was through-hole.... Anyway, I'll give it a shot, no worries. It's just that I've got big clumsy hands and my eye-sight is not what it used to be......

I am in the same boat. I would love to support this as well as it's some bucks that way as a "thank you" for all the awesome knowledge I have gained since joining.

If some early BOMs could be provided that would be a bonus!

Part of the reason that we thought this would be a good entry for many into SMT is that one can start by populating only the Fuzz Face, testing it and then with a bit more comfort, populate the ToneBender side (or not if you don't want to).  It's a small parts count fuzz, so there's less to do before finding out of it works.

Now, I HIGHLY recommend a flux pen and tweezers.  I will provide Mouser links to those so people can be sure they get the right ones.

Somebody should create mouser boms to make it easier for those of us who are less motivated to do so. ;-)

I'm only handling the board I did, but I guarantee you a BOM with Mouser part numbers listed on it will be made available.  I realize that ordering SMT parts is a bit different due to all the package sizes, so I want to make it easier for those who may not have done it in the past.

that sounds great. I was just kidding, but I've never done smt so that'd be helpful for those like me as well! Thank you sir.

SMD isn't really that bad, and you don't need a super fine tip. Having a flux pen (or flux syringe), tweezers, and #2 soldering braid is essential for SMD however. I prefer curved tweezers myself.

I think we can do a consolidated Mouser BOM for all three boards. However, there may be a few parts that Mouser does not stock (or not cheaply). The DuoVibe uses two LDRs, for example, and those are not usually stocked by Mouser (but cheap and available from Tayda).

I think that it would be cool to get a group buy on any "exotic" parts (LDRs, strange SMD caps, vactrols, weird chips) however if you think you may be getting into SMD (even a little) you should pony up and buy a cheap resistor/capacitor kit.  The two most common resistor sizes for pedals are 0603 and 0805, you can find packs on eBay for under $10.  Keep in mind (especially if you are new to SMD) that you will lose some of these components.  If you drop them on the floor you can pretty much kiss it goodbye!

Working over a magnet is good, or as I like to do - is have a small box with a thin magnet sheet in the bottom where you can source your parts.

Another tip I would share for SMD is to grab some of these storage boxes off eBay.  Just search "SMD Storage" and they will pop up.  They are spring loaded and open with one hand.  Plus they interlock so you can rearrange them as your collection grows.  Of course they come in different colors which is cool for different types of components, and if you are going to store SMD ICs in there they even make a black ESD safe version.  If you buy 100qty at a time they are about 25c each.

Yep, very good advice.  I use those same storage containers at home.  I use some often larger ones for through-hole capacitors as well.

For the containers, I would recommend getting the anti-static versions for storing transistors, ICs and diodes.

Now, those containers aren't required when you are starting.  I made it a long time without them. But if you start doing SMT work on any regular basis, they are invaluable.

Despite the fact that there are a plethora of SMT guides online, I am going to try and throw together a not-too-crappy guide to show how I do it and what tools I find useful.  I've put much of the info in posts in the past, but pictures are usually a bit nicer than words.

This is great, Im so excited to build these pedals. Just to clarify I can hook up two 3pdt switches and then have either the tonebender on, the fuzzface on or even both on?

Yep.  Each circuit has a dedicated input and output so you can give each it's own switch.

And yes, you could put both on at the same time, but I am not sure you'll want to.  :-)

Well, the Greasegun makes me really happy ... and a little angry. I just spent most of last night planning a layout for Smallbear's Ursa Minor with a MOSFET boost in front ... and the grease gun is basically the same thing with improvements. :P [Edit: I guess it's actually a single Big Muff stage ...]

I just put together a Mouser BOM for the NoMoJo and with the part numbers from the doc, it does go pretty quick.  I bumped all the resistors to Qty 10 since there was a big price break.  Only wound up costing 10 more cents overall but gives me spares in case I drop some or whatever.  The total BOM comes out to $11.84 which aint bad at all.  Only need to source the pots from somewhere else, though I likely already have those values in my inventory.

Yeah, my best advice for building SMT: buy extra parts, especially in the beginning.  You WILL fling a component when holding it with tweezers.  I still do it now and again.  I used to look for the parts, I don't bother for most resistors and caps anymore.

The idea to put the names up was just a way of saying thank you to everybody that helped; we certainly don't want to put anybody off by it.  I don't think leaving it off is an issue.

We could also just put the monikers people use on the forum.

Yeah, we could do that. But I don't see the harm in first name/last name. Without some other piece of identifying information, there's not much value in just a name. No way would we publish email addresses. That's just stupid and also there's no point to it. Besides, the NSA already has all that.

But if a few folks are uncomfortable with it, we can just drop it. No biggie. We just wanted to give credit to our supporters on the company site. But we're happy to take all the credit ourselves.  ;D

The idea was to be like some of the Kickstarter projects out there. For projects like funding a band's album or funding an indy movie, lots of those project will include the supporter's names on their site (or liner notes, or credits) as part of the "value" of contributing money.

I think his point was that there is no value in a name in terms of someone exploiting that information. The value to us is quite different. But, there is no reason to make anyone uncomfortable so I expect we'll figure out an alternate way of saying thanks.

Right, should we create a wait list and claim to sell them but you'll have to wait two years, and post fake pictures of them in the wild. The company will make millions, THEN we get our stock options. It's the perfect plan. I think I'll buy a Lamborghini......

The Mouser part numbers were in the doc, but I don't think there is a BOM.  I went into Mouser last night and created a project for the SMD parts only - resistors, caps & trannies.  It came to $8.83.  I've never done this before, but I could probably figure out how to create and share a BOM.  Like someone else already mentioned, Mouser's site intimidates the hell out of me.

I plan to place my order after I receive the board - I think I'll double the quantities to have some spares.  I did notice that some of the resistors were out of stock.
Title: Re: 11.01 - Function F(x) Fundraiser Announcement
Post by: pickdropper on November 17, 2013, 07:00:38 AM
Yeah, I put the Mouser part numbers in the build doc, but did not create an actual BOM at Mouser.  One of the reason is that parts do go out of stock.  Fortunately, most of the passives have many viable replacements.

I went through the parts on the BOM just now and noticed only two that are out of stock without alternates that come up as part of the part search.  The values I saw were the 33k and 1k resistors.  Here are some alternate parts:

660-RK73H1JTTD3302F
660-RK73H1JTTD1001F

If anything else goes out of stock, you can find alternate resistors using the following search criteria at Mouser:

Resistance Value -
Case Code - in - 0603

If you want, you can throw in Power Rating - 1/10W, but you probably don't need to.

Yeah, all of the resistors are 0603.  Most of the caps are 0805, with the exception of the 47uF, which are 1206 because I wanted them to be 16V.

My preference is 0603 as I find them about as easy to hand-solder as 0805.  I do hand-solder smaller components fairly regularly.  Usually it's 0402, which aren't too bad, but I wouldn't recommend those as a starting point for the first time SMT build.  I've done 0201 resistors as well, but those are really quite tiny and not as much fun.  I haven't tried 1005, which are so small they are difficult to see.  We have some at work, so maybe I'll try them one of these days just for the challenge.

I would check to make sure the 1206 cap kit actually includes the 47uF cap.  That's a fairly large (and less common) value, so I kind of doubt it's in the kit.

The 0603 resistor kit should be perfect.

Good call, it only goes up to 1uF. Should come in handy anyways, no harm done.

Also, a question... I cannot seem to source 25k 3362P trims for a reasonable price. Can I substitute 20k or 50k?

Is that a bias trimmer? You can usually be safe with a larger value, just makes it a bit harder to dial in the sweet spot.

These 1206 47uFs are impossible to source over here. Mouser's shipping is ridiculous.

In a fuzz face, 4.5v is pretty standard for bias voltage.

I'm late getting in on this pcb set, since getting laid-off for a second time this year....and all my resources are going into starting my own business (e-cig shop). But the excitement of this thread is going to make me pull the trigger on it, even if I won't be able to build them this year.

Alright...
These 1206 47uFs are impossible to source over here. Mouser's shipping is ridiculous.

Anyone willing to grab me a dozen and stuff it in an envelope? I'll pay any reasonable amount to cover the parts and shipping and a beer or three.

Are you in the UK? I just checked and Farnell has them, although they seem to be US stock.

Since these are hand soldered, it should be OK to to substitute 1210s if you want.  They are a bit wider than the 1206's, but it should be OK.  I can check the alignment tomorrow at work with some 1210s.  Farnell has plenty of different 47uF 1210 caps in their UK stock.

I've done 0201 resistors as well

You must be a machine, I just looked up the dimensions on those, they're .6 x .3 mm!!!! I could inhale those and not notice.....

Paul

Don't be too impressed.  I don't claim tremendous proficiency, just that I have done it in the past when I had to.  I remember it being quite tricky.  I wouldn't put them on a PCB that I was hand-soldering.  Frankly, I don't put then on a PCB unless absolutely necessary; not all pick and place machines can handle them.

I'm in Croatia so Farnell is also on the expensive end, shipping-wise.
They also don't seem to have anything over 10V, not that it matters:

I did find this though, so if it fits it'd do I suppose:

Maybe I can be of assistance? I'll have to get me some parts as well, and can easily add some more, stick em in an envelope and mail them to Croatia (lovely country BTW, had very nice holiday there 2 years ago!). Shouldn't cost more then a euro or two because the stuff weighs next to nothing. Are you in a real big hurry?

If you are set up to receive paypal monies, just charge a few De Molen Hels on me (tried some this spring in Amsterdam, that was damn fine!)...

No problem at all, just glad I can help. I'll contact Rockhorst (He's Dutch as well), maybe we can do something for the three of us. If other Euros want to join the SMT/SMD parts buy, we might want to set up a group buy. I'll give it some thought and get back to you this coming week. Still scares the crap out of me, resistors small enough to snort..... Or is that me being Dutch?  ;)

Paul, this is a good idea.  The pricing for these caps generally comes way down with quantity, so a group buy could save everybody some money, even with a bit of postage in there.

LOL! Yeah, I guess so. I'll get this organized this week, as I guess a lot of euro's are struggling to get the right parts without paying some enormous shipping costs. Right now, I see two possibilities, Mouser and Farnell. I'll check at work tomorrow, we have a department that regularly orders at Farnell, I might be able to sneak this in there and skip shipping all together. Now why the hell didn't I think of that before! *smashes head on table*

Seriously guys if you don't have any SMD parts, you can get a starter kit for around $10 on ebay. They are all over the site. The same goes for larger cap sizes...you can get 50 or 100 pcs for about what mouser charges for 10pcs. Then you can build up your smd collection for future builds!  Link to just one 0805 resistor/capacitor kit:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/2300pcs-SMD-0805-0-10M-50value-Resistor-2-2pf-1uf-40value-Capacitor-Kit-Set-/110941312626?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d49e1672 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2300pcs-SMD-0805-0-10M-50value-Resistor-2-2pf-1uf-40value-Capacitor-Kit-Set-/110941312626?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d49e1672)

Most importantly you want to get some tweezers (I prefer curved), some flux, some desoldering braid (#2 is good). The coolest part about smd to me is using liquid solder paste and a reflow skillet (just get a hot plate skillet).  Check out Sparkfun's reflow skillet tutorial.  Basically you put paste on all the pads, put your parts on with tweezers, and bake for about 4minutes on the skillet. Done!

Rully, I got my kits off ebay. 0805 resistors, 0603 resistors, 0805 caps, other smd bits and pieces as well.
The kit on your link doesn't state the resistor tolerance, there are 5% and 1% available so one needs to pay attention (been known to buy a few duds myself when I got careless  ::) ). I'm pretty well set for quite a few projects now. But there are a few parts that no kit contains and those aren't readily available, even on ebay. Hence all the commotion.

That skillet looks fun but I need this to take time so that I can unwind. That's my main purpose for doing this dance in the first place... ;D

Here are some links to Conrad SMD parts. They have everything except the 1206 47uF capacitors:

Multilayer capacitors: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/overview/0206860/SMD-Multilayer-Capacitors?filterType=0805&filterContent~~pc(s)=1

Ceramic capacitors: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/overview/0206810/SMD-Ceramic-Capacitors?filterType=0805&sort=Title-asc

Transistors: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/overview/5104045/Transistors?filterCasing=SOT+23&sort=Title-asc&page=3

Thick film resistors: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/overview/0241250/SMD-Thick-Film-Resistors?filterBrand=Vishay&sort=Price-asc

Bourns trimmers: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/Search.html?search=bourns+3362&sort=Price-asc&page=2

Standard delivery to the UK from £6.99 delivered in 2 to 3 working days

I'm new to SMT so trying to find this stuff and deciphering the different package types was a bit of a learning experience!

I haven't used Conrad yet but I like the fact I can order SMD parts in small quantities as opposed to in the hundreds or thousands.

I hope these links are of use to everyone who, like myself, are taking their first steps in SMT  :)

Seriously though, good call. Conrad was always the last place I looked, they used to have a pretty high minimum order for my country and high shipping costs so I never really considered them an option.
From what I can tell, this has changed somewhat so I may actually give them some of my business sometime...

Yeah, I am still a bit surprised they are that difficult to find, but we really want people to build these boards.  We don't want finding those caps to prevent that from happening.  The rest of the parts should be really easy to source, either individually or with fairly inexpensive parts kits on eBay.

There are separate ins and outs for the FF and TB sides so it's really a two-in-one.  You could easily put them each on separate switches or use a toggle to switch which effect is active.

You can also use a 3PDT or 4PDT toggle to change the order in which they go - FF-TB or TB-FF. Search for order switching on the forum and I'm pretty sure there is a wiring diagram.

I mousered my smt bits but am short a few resistors.  I've ordered an eBay resistor kit which ought to get me to completion.  I'm excited to try it out.   So far, smt hasn't been quite as bad as I thought.  I think I have the components soldered decently.  Definitely wouldn't recommend it for a first build though.

Chinese ebay sellers sell most of the parts in kits, but some are more difficult to find though, like the 22uf and 47uf caps (at least that's what I found)

Big kudos to fn f(x) though for including the 47uf caps for us non-US types - thanks guys :)

My only foray into SMD was a board I designed, a SMD big muff with through-hole electro, diodes, and transistors. It was pretty much a failure, since everything was crammed too tightly (including via's about a mil away from smd pads.)

So I am actually looking forward to working on one of PD's boards. I've been using my crap smd muff boards as practice mules for technique :)

Using bad boards to practice is a fantastic idea.

Another good source of practice boards is an old, dead video card (or other computer peripheral).  Those make great sacrificial lambs.

Pickdropper has a great idea about practicing on dead electronic smd PCBs. You can use a heat gun (in a well ventilated area) on old boards to get the smd components off and then practice putting some back on. As long as you have flux, tweezers, and a decent iron you are ready to give it a shot.

Pickdropper has a great idea about practicing on dead electronic smd PCBs. You can use a heat gun (in a well ventilated area) on old boards to get the smd components off and then practice putting some back on. As long as you have flux, tweezers, and a decent iron you are ready to give it a shot.
just from looking at how small the board is, I may have to get a second set of glasses to wear with the first pair! Yaaay old eyes.

Jimi (and everybody else),

These are actually pretty helpful and they are cheap:

I use them for surface mount parts when I don't feel like taking out the microscope.

Well, all of the International orders will include the 47uF 1206 caps, so you should be good to go then.

It's awesome that you attached these capacitors! They're the only part I couldn't get. I already wondered were these parts came from (I didn't pay attention when I emptied the bag). Btw., a good source of parts in central Europe is RS components (http://www.rs-components.com/index.html), except for Footswitches and special parts like the Pt2399. Also, I get discounts over work :)

I got one question concerning the Nomojo Fuzz, though. Some of you were discussing getting the signal from the Fuzzface into the Tonebender or vice versa. I guess that's just a bonus feature since it is supposed to be 2 separate effects, right?

This would be my switching for the NoMoJo Fuzz. That should work?!

I wouldn't go with that switching. I'd go with two 3PDT's, each wired according to the MBP wiring diagram, like so --

Input jack goes to input of first stomp
(FX in and out goes to first effect)
Output of first stomp goes to input of second stomp
(FX in and out goes to second effect)
Output of second stomp goes to output jack.

You could get fancier with an effect order changing switch.

Since I stuffed mine in a 1590a, I did a similar switch, except that I used a DPDT and didn't worry about putting about adding more LEDs.  I can tell which one is on based on the position of the switch.

If I did use a 3PDT, I'd probably use a bi-color LED.

Because either way, you're still going to use two stomp switches, but with one way you can have both on at once, with the other way you cannot.

My idea was to use them separately, not in series. That should work with my setup.
The only problem I see is to fit all that stuff in the 1590A!

I've stuffed two circuits in a 1590a before.  It can be done but it's a bit of a hassle.  I used a 3PDT toggle for the bypass switch on one of them.  Two stomps won't fit.
Title: Re: 11.01 - Function F(x) Fundraiser Announcement
Post by: m-Kresol on December 16, 2013, 09:25:57 AM
So, if I want to populate both sides and have a switching similar to the one I posted above (bypass stomp with indicator plus effect selecting), how would you do that? A 3PDT and a 2PDT stomp or switch (leaving the LED part off)?
Title: Re: 11.01 - Function F(x) Fundraiser Announcement
Post by: pickdropper on December 16, 2013, 09:31:46 AM
The one you posted above will only allow one circuit one active at a given time.  Is that what you are looking for?  If so , you could use a DPDT as a selector switch ( 3PDT if you want to use separate LEDs).

If you want both circuits to be individually bypassed/enabled , you'll need two  separate 3PDT switches and you would use the standard madbean wiring for a true bypass effect .  You would just take the jack output of the first effect to the jack input of the second.

Yes, that's what I've been trying to do. Isn't that the intention of the build? That you have 2 independent Fuzz-Effects in one pedal?
I guess both ways will lead to the same end. Except that I could enable both effects at the same time with your second option. But is there a point even doing so? wouldn't there be just a shitload of distortion, which makes your original tone unrecognizable? Also, if you say that two 3PDT stomps won't fit in an 1590A, that's not really an option if you indeed want to build it in that casing.

EDIT: I just had a look at the 1590A casing again (it's my first time with that one) and I have to admit, that my switching would never fit. I even doubt, that I could fit one stomp a regular switch and 4 potentiometers... Guess, I'll get a 1590B or something similar.
Title: Re: 11.01 - Function F(x) Fundraiser Announcement
Post by: pickdropper on December 16, 2013, 10:33:28 AM
All solid points.  I used a DPDT to switch the inputs and outputs and then used the standard wrong diagram ( similar to what you drew, but no individual LED).  It was tight, but it did fit in a 1590a.

I didn't do two separate 3PDT stomps because I wanted to fit it in a 1590a, but I suspect many people will build it that way so that they can choose either one while playing without having to lean over and flip the toggle switch.

There's no wrong way, just different preferences.

Thanks for your fast replies. After looking at the casing i just have to ask how on earth you managed to put 4 potentiometers in that casing? Did you put some on the side walls or are all of them on top? I'd really like to see your final stompbox, if you find time for it.

Sorry for the dredge, but there's a certain black humour in the NoMoJo for me.

It might claim to be mojo-free, but I still wind up ordering from suppliers I normally don't touch for this "no mojo", and still get stung for shipping ;) :)  :P (Mouser for the smd parts; I had to order some other stuff, so grabbed 'em while I was at it. I think Mouser automatically adds on the $39 shipping when they see "Alan" anywhere in the order, even if I just have small parts.)

Since there are only 4 more days in the First Quarter of 2014, and there is no feedback system on the site, I figured I would ask here.

We are *discussing* the possibility of offering PCBs for some of the designs we come up with that end up not being appropriate for the business. For example, we may develop a cool circuit that sounds great, but it's not practical to produce on a commercial scale (for any of a variety of reasons). So it would be a shame to just let that circuit lay fallow.

It's not a definite yet, but it may happen.

Ah, I have an early goof-up here, but that is most likely going to have the top sanded and it will be a clean slate.  The box you have was the alternate finished one.

That reminds me that I was going to make a board for that.  I just didn't get around to it.

Where can I order? ;D

We are in the process of setting up dealers.  As soon as we know where, we'll let everybody know.

We aren't planning on doing direct sales at this point.  We believe that dealers add value for both the end user and the manufacturer and having dealers in the loop should allow us to focus more of our efforts on product development.

We've discussed it briefly, and it's something we plan on doing for sure. But it will likely be several months after our US launch (for a variety of reasons).

I hope so.  It really falls on what the requirements are for the dealer to import it.  If they insist on CE marking, it's not likely to happen as there is no way we can afford that.  We are going to get them FCC tested for the US, but CE is MUCH more expensive.  We'd have to grow quite a bit for that to be even close to justified.

That said, most small manufacturers don't test at all (or even use RoHS solder) and they still seem to end up being sold overseas.  We are just going to have to see how it unfolds.

Yeah, no 3PDTs.  All relay switching.

It won't be massively obvious with our early releases, but one of the unknown FFX guys knows quite a bit about microcontrollers.  In a previous life, he used to design PIC chip architecture for one of the major manufacturers.  He spent a lot of time writing code for them as well.  He's also the person I've learned the most about board layouts from.  Sharp dude.

If you are looking for distributors in Europe you want to get in contact with Cotton Music Supply in Germany. They carry a lot of small labels and are connected into every local shop across Germany.

CMS are well connected, but they are quite expensive, too.
Then you have http://www.effekt-boutique.de/ (http://www.effekt-boutique.de/), a big online dealer, but expensive, too.
They all are very expensive compared to your US prices.
There used to be http://crushthebutton.com/ (http://crushthebutton.com/) in Belgium, but they seemd to have moved to Poland now, don't know what's the deal with that.
There is a little shop, http://www.realguitars.de (http://www.realguitars.de), that is the distributor for Barber pedals. You can get Barber pedals from them or from any shop that inquires about them. They are not that well known, but they know what they are doing, and try to make fair prices, at least with the pedals. Amps, I don't know.

Maybe some other Europeans can chime in?!

FFX will need a distributor with wide reach and low passthrough cost. Price of the product should be stable.

The first batch of Clusterfuzz pedals are being built. pickdropper has put in a tremendous effort in making this first batch roll out. We are getting our dealers lined up and getting the pedals in the hands of the right people to start building up some buzz. And, hey: we are only one year behind schedule! But, that's what it took to get here, so there it is. We've been through so much product development it is hard to believe we are finally almost ready.

Here is a custom jig Dave and Jerry made for lasering the sides on the enclosures. Pretty awesome, huh?

That wasn't the first rig we built.  :-)

The first one was acrylic.  It works, but there is always concern about scratching the cases when loading and unloading them from the fixture.

For each "deck" on this one, it has acrylic and poron foam.  The hole in the acrylic is cut oversized so that it provides rigidity to the fixture but never touches the box.  The poron is cut slightly undersized so that it holds the box in place.  Not too complicated, but took a little bit to hash out.  We have a simpler fixture for etching the tops of the boxes.

Later on, I'll take a photo of the board assembly fixture and post it.

We have three overdrives in the the works right now...all very different from one another. All three are actually pretty close to being "locked in" on the design. What happens next largely depends on how well this first batch of fuzzes does so we are trying to get those out the door as soon as we can.
Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!

Thanks. My comment to the other guys was something like "I just wrote what did not offend me" (I hate marketing speak). We all agreed our sales copy should stay away fro the standard boutique cliches whenever possible. But, we did agree that the phrase "made with the highest quality components available from some countries" might get used at some point, haha.

We will have a gutshot up soon. Some of our products will probably include schematics for service, too. We haven't decided exactly how that will play out, but I think Dave, Forrest and I pretty well agree that we should release at least partial schematics on products in a service manual and/or to the DIY community.

Yeah, there's really no good reason not to have schematics public and more or less easily accessible. It will help with service for people who want to have a local tech make repairs (or even mods), it will satisfy the curious, and somebody at FSB will post it anyway -- probably sooner rather than later considering that Brian and I were once frequent contributors and both left in a huff. ;)

Brian, for schematics, you could have something on the site about providing repair information for techs servicing the pedal. For instance, if some shop gets your pedal in, and the tech googles the company, then could email you and you can then send them the info.

I have done that, and it worked well.

Brian, just rig the inside of each pedal with one of your beard hairs and when you receive a pedal back you will know its been opened.

Print on bottom:
"Void warranty if beard hair is no longer intact"

Yeah, obviously we won't post anything until after the pedal is already being sold by dealers. Nobody will need a schematic for the first few months anyway.

And while we believe the circuit is pretty damn unique in terms of fuzz, there's simply no reason to try to hide the schematic. Our business plan is to keep pumping out new stuff. We've seen that trying to derive all income from one or two pedals for 10+ years (and then having a crybaby pity party when somebody clones them) just isn't a very realistic way to say solvent. Innovate or die!

Well I would have thought that one or several of you guys where directly behind those boards however I'm also aware that you have and must have a greater team (as mentioned on fx site) working together.
So in that greater way I'm sure you are behind it even and are all pulling your weight, even if it's not directly designing this specific board layout.
I'm sure there's a lot of work and dedication in all you guys pull up there, so Brian's quote of "Dave has been pretty busy, I guess..." can certainly not be far off.

Once you guys are rolling and as you establish yourselves it would be interesting to see and learn a bit more of they works and spanners of your way of pulling up this business and how you produce, as much as you would feel comfortable sharing this journey.
I'm sure quite a number of people will find that interesting, me included.

First though, best of luck, have a great start and lotsa success! 8)

Thanks Cooder.  I do think we'll share some of how we do it as our process gets settled down.  There are some things we're still figuring out.

Without a doubt, everybody is pulling their weight.  While we've spent a lot of the last year figuring out an optimal work flow, everybody involved is a vital cog and it wouldn't be the same without any of the folks involved.

And you are correct, I've been very busy lately.  Brian wasn't kidding about that.

That's definitely with the pedal set more to the overdrive type of sound.  It gets really fuzzy and splatty, too.  I expect the Gearmandude review will show off more of its range.

Awesome sounding!

In the "About" section of the website, instead of just putting up your first names, maybe you could say that you are Madbean, Pickdropper, Culturejam etc., the popes of DIY, inventors of now classic circuits, that other companies have built these circuits etc., and that this is now your non-DIY company of original designs.
I'm sure gear heads who don't do DIY themselves have heard some of your names. Might help spread the word and add some street cred.

It's probably because I read _Diamond Mask_ too many times, but the word makes me think of diapir, not a nappy that you'd put on a baby.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diapir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diapir)

GMD's reviews are always interesting, but his accent and wording makes me cringe, a bit. Too over the top. (The national tendency here is towards understatement. "It's a bit chilly." (car windows iced up.))

I appreciate this is probably very low on your list, but at one point you might consider marketing drop in relay bypass boards based on your design.
I for one would check them out, particularly as a kit or easily-orderable parts with the uC  included.

^^ We talked about that. The main issue is that it's expensive. We don't envision something like that being a big hit on the DIY scene, and that's where they would likely sell the best. I don't recall the price point we came up wit, but it was pretty high for DIY.

It's still possible we might do it, however.

Yeah, there were two issues:

1.)  Surprisingly high parts cost.

2.)  More parts than usual in a relay switching scheme.  It'd be fairly large as a through-hole board.  If we did a pre-populated SMT board it could be a bit more reasonably sized.

Now, you have to open it, take a photo of the guts, trace it, and release a PCB  :P

Just kidding. I want one of those too badly. Haven't bought many guitar pedals (well, some broken, but not many in working conditions) and this one is a winner.

If they don't show at this side of the ocean in the following months, I'll pull the trigger on one of those Rock'n Roll Vintage has on ebay.

We did confirm with Rock N Roll vintage that they will ship overseas.

We haven't found an EU distributor yet, so we don't have much of a timeline on that yet.

Thomann in Germany seem to do a lot of odd stuff and are quite reasonable in the EU. Worth a shot for decent scale distribution. If you want to keep it small, Joes Pedals.

Obviously we are starting small, but the goal is to scale up.

If I find some time during this week, I'll write a list of well known spanish distributors with the brands they are representing.

Thomann is the biggest distributor in Europe (as long as I can recall), but also MusicStore and some others are well known around here. If I were you, I'll avoid those and focus on smaller brick & mortar stores. Not because of that "boutique thing", but because of the way they actually sell/show the product to people: small pedals companies' market is not as big in Europe as it is in USA, here people often use brands they already known, and you cannot actually play or test a pedal in a big distributor or an online store.

Joes Pedals (http://www.joespedals.com) - He imports a lot of boutique stuff into the UK and I've used him a couple of times. Seems sound for low volume stuff.

Thomann (http://www.thomann.de/gb/index.html) are in Germany and would be great for EU-wide distribution. Very sensible delivery costs and pricing. They were the only place that stocked the AMT Japanese Girl, so they're not averse to more obscure stuff. Despite being the EU's best known (and probably biggest) internet distributer.

These are more UK based: Andertons (http://www.andertons.co.uk), GAK (http://www.gak.co.uk), Dolphin (http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk) and DV247 (http://www.dv247.com). Used all of those but Andertons, but they do have a good rep.

OK, copying some bookmarks onto here for European/German distributors:
http://www.effekt-boutique.de/ (http://www.effekt-boutique.de/) Online shop for pedals

Some of these are new-ish, some have been around for decades. Some are smaller, some are really big. You can usually see on the start page what brands they represent. Sorry in case some of them have no English language site.

And then there are the small reputable shops for gear nerds that carry a brand of pedals but possibly have no large influence:
http://www.realguitars.de/ (http://www.realguitars.de/) Euro distributor for Barber pedals.
http://www.deimelguitarworks.de/ (http://www.deimelguitarworks.de/) Carries Durham pedals and others. And I could go around there.

Rocking the Yellow and Black. Nice!

I saw them in concert last year and they were amazing. Michael Sweet's ability to shred on those heavy metal licks while singing just floored me. I think it floored Oz Fox too. He pointed it out "Can you believe he's singing while playing like that!"

GermanCdn. They're not wearing spandex any more, so you might be able to pull it off.

I've successfully missed them on three separate occasions now (I swear, they have a map of Canada with only Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver on it).  Twice the promoter backed out and once the show got moved by a week.

Mike is a fantastic guitar player, and I'm amazed at how his voice has held up.  They're currently recording the follow up to NMHTP as we speak, I can't wait for that to come out.

Mike's new project with George Lynch comes out tomorrow.  I think both George and Mike need a Clustefuzz.  There, back on topic.

His review is very insightful into the idea behind the CF. But, I do think he gives a little too much credit in the idea that every small nuance was carefully planned. Some things are happy accidents. That said, he totally nailed how I would describe the CF in a much more eloquent way. Huzzah for JustNick!

Well, that's not totally true.  During board population, every component is properly weighed and measured against similar components to determine that it's the most awesome part available.  I find this works best:

Or did you not want me to tell them that?

It's not often that I shell out for a "boutique" pedal (and I say boutique with the most positive of connotations), but I'm gassing hard for this bad boy.
Is there any southern hemisphere distro in the pipelines? or failing that, are you guys selling direct?
I need one of these critters in my life :)

TLDR: GIMMEH!

We aren't setup to sell direct, but some of our dealers have confirmed that they do ship worldwide.

Not a problem to have happy accidents in it too, there's many happy accidents in history.
The overall concept and sound is a total winner obviously (and unlike blue tack not just a happy accident) and that's what this review nailed too! You guys must be chuffed and it's great to see this gathering steam. Reviews like this must be really helpful! Well deserved!

Hey Marcus,

At this point, it probably is as we don't have a UK distributor yet.  RNR Vintage will ship worldwide, too.

So in my effort of helping out my buddys i.... somehow hooked a band to FFX ClusterFuzz.

At first it was going to my studio engineer friend Yannick, but after playing it and LOVING it, he decided to make it part of the band that he's currently producing and on tour with right now....

So yep! ClusterFuzz is rocking the northern lands right now!

Dave can fill in the details, but basically there are a couple of "modes" you can select by  holding down both switches for a few seconds. One mode is "standard", so each switch bypasses each OD circuit like an on/ff. Another mode uses one switch to bypass the whole pedal, and the other toggles the second OD circuit off/on (so you can boost or stack). I believe a third mode has master bypass on one switch, and the other switch toggles between the two OD circuits (flip/flop).

But like I said, Dave has the details. It's microcontroller stuff, and that's usually where I check out.  ;D

Important question - how haunting are the low mids? are the upper mids sufficiently paranormal?

This is pretty current. Forrest and I do the layouts for the prototypes, but for production layouts we hand it over to our engineer, Jerry. He also designed the switching system. It even has headers on it so we can program the chips right on the board. Jerry is pretty awesome. Dave and Jerry also do final assembly and testing. We've got them set up so they are very easy to plug/unplug with the headers and stuff.

One other cool thing is we have AC detection in there so it won't fry the board if you plug in AC instead of DC.

Those are actually for the switching circuit.  The AC protection is done with a PTC.

I have seen PTCs used in some comercial pedals at FSB dissections. Even JHS guys added one to their Morning Glory I think...
It's a good practice, a lot of people out there don't really care about what they stick into their dc plugs.... 9v is 9v and 12v  is 12v, right? :P

It's nice insurance for both customer and builder.  It reduces the chance of the user having to send it in for service and the builder from having to do the service.

Thanks Jason, we certainly are aiming high, so we appreciate it when it's noticed.

What you see in the gutshot is a contribution from the entire team, but the our lesser-known member Jerry has been particularly important.  Jerry is the only non-guitar player in the group, but he has the most professional board layout experience.  I learned most of my PCB layout tricks from him and it's really only a small fraction of what he knows.  He's also got a background in designing PICS (the architecture of them, not just using them for designs) which has also helped out a lot.

Space considerations.  We couldn't fit it all in with through-hole parts.  We had enough room for film caps in the signal path so that's what we did.  There are SMT ceramic caps for the sections outside of the direct audio path.

We're pretty excited about this one, too.  It's got some cool switching features in it.  Basically there are three modes:

Mode 1: each switch is bypass for a circuit.  This is like a standard dual pedal.

Mode 2: one switch is master bypass, the other toggles between circuits.  An example of this would be to have one channel for rhythm and one lead.  You can switch between them without dancing.

Mode 3: dual mode (aka Third Rail mode).  One switch is bypass for both circuits at the same time.  The other is a momentary bypass for both.

This pedal started out as a single circuit but we found we all really liked it as two stacked pedals so we decided to make it a dual.

OK dammit, I can't help it - I have to sleuth.

Those TO-92 can't be JFETs. Each side has two pairs of clipping diodes. We in the Muff family here?

Nope, not a muff.  It's doing its own thing.

It borrows a trick from the Muff, but the sound of the circuit is FAR from a Muff.

Nice q&a! I'm glad you guys are getting these opportunities for exposure. The pedals both look excellent. Can't wait to see what you guys release next.

Yes, we are weeks away from the next release. It looks like it will be called the "Parallax". It's a phaser/tremolo. It sounds...pretty insane!
