Title: Mammoth Sale on 3dpt and a Few Other Things
Post by: BrianS on April 15, 2015, 01:49:42 PM
Just got an email from Mammoth on a sale Apr 15 - 17. Here's the link:

http://secure.campaigner.com/Campaigner/Public/t.show?85uto--45iyj-z8nmdz0&_v=2

Only 4 things on sale (only thing interesting to me is the switches). Pro and premier 3pdts 35% off. A battery sled, clear fuse kits and a voltage regulator.

LOL.  The Pro switches are fine and 35% off is a good deal. I bought 20 during the last sale. They are much better than the blue 3pdt.

Steve.

Yeah, but they might ship you just 15 switches, and then not respond to your repeated emails telling them you ordered 20 and they sent you 15, and then they'll mail you a 3'x4' box with just 2 switches in it...

Or they 'might' get your order right. Unsure at this point, but it's a possibility. I guess. Maybe. It could happen.

For what it's worth, I've ordered from Mammoth a bunch of times and only had one messed up order.   They forgot a 1590a, I wrote to them and they responded quickly and sent me one.   My orders have always been on the smaller scale, perhaps easier to deal with.

Out of 8 orders I have made with them I have had one problem (bag spilt during shipment and a couple of ICs were missing). They replaced them (took longer than I thought it should) so I can't complain. And along with Slacker my orders have been small. I did order 20 switches 2 sales ago and they made it with no problem. This is just a hobby for me so if something is missing/damaged its not that big a deal as long as it gets replaced. I suppose I have been lucky with my orders because with the exception of the missing ICs and a broken DPDT from tayda everything I have ordered (Small Bear, Tayda, Mammoth, Arrow, Paul in Austrailia, etc....) has made it to me intact.

I ordered from Mammoth once -- they sent me someone else's order. They made it right pretty quickly, but still asked me to open the package to confirm it was the wrong one. So I was exposed to someone else's address/other personal information, which made me feel pretty weird.

I've stuck to Small Bear, PPP, and Mouser since.

I worked in a warehouse when i was young, the store manager was a bit of a mental.  He drilled into me "You must double check every single order after picking!!".  That must have spilled over into my later life / webstore habits as this is what i do.

See...sometimes you THINK you were thorough, but then you go through the parts "what the hell did i do that for!?".  Saves time in the long run for me and the customer. Doesn't stop EVERY ERROR but vastly reduces the odds.

Um...should i go tell mammoth ;-)

It also vastly reduces business costs -- rework like that is not cheap.

A broad streak of OCD helps with this soldering gig too :)

I have had a Mammoth package show up unexpectedly with someone else's name and MY address. Emailed them to ask for direction and was told to keep it! Also, had MY order go missing for 3 weeks from them.

I have ordered 3 times in the last 2 years from Smallbear and ALL of them had issues. Missing parts, wrong parts, and slow delivery (in my opinion it should not take 2 weeks to go 400 miles)

About the only reliable and accurate shipments I have gotten in this hobby have been from Tayda believe it or not...

Tayda seems pretty good as far as accuracy and speed of delivery. A few of my recent orders have arrived in less than a week. I think they've duplicated a lot of their stock in the US.

I have made many orders with Mammoth, and the main issue with them is that they may be out of stock of some part, thus delaying your order.  However, they have always made good (shipping items) and their prices and variety of items are good.  No complaints.  YMMV.

I don't think I've ever had an error with Tayda either and their shipping times are always fast.

Of course, I've thrown out quite a few parts from Tayda because they were poor quality or out of spec, but that's not a logistics or fulfillment issue.

I have a feeling that this will be the first time my order is 100% correct. I mean the odds must be that if I order enough times from them it will happen once, no? :-)

I wonder if the service issues with Mammoth are related to the size of the order.  My orders are usually small potatoes (~$50), and I'm sure if you're ordering hundreds of dollars worth of parts, the odds of a mistake increase proportionally.

BTW, I've ordered from Smallbear many times and have ALWAYS received outstanding customer service from Steve.  They are my main go-to supplier for my modest needs.  I have also ordered from Tayda and Dipmicro via eBay and they are always fast and efficient, but may not have the specific parts I need.  Again, YMMV.

I've had a couple issues with Tayda sending me the wrong stuff. For example, one of the parts baggies said "100uf Electro" on the label, but inside was ferrite beads. When they get it wrong, they get it waaaaay wrong.  ;D

One time, I also once received someone else's order from iTead. It was about $200 worth of Arduino stuff. I contacted them, and they convinced me to mail it to the intended recipient...in Sweden! But they hooked me up with a store credit after paying me back for the shipping cost. So no biggie.

If you're enough of a snake, you can get away with shitty customer service, bad parts, and poor shipping.

If you're a genuine GC (good... er... chap), you don't really need to work at it. Your previous customers will come back, and bring their mates with them.

Mammoth has been doing me better lately. Kinda cool to see them carrying sleds/etc. DIY vaping folks make boxes in the B and G sizes. The regulator/MOSFET is a competitve price to the normal one used. No reason to not try to grab some of that business, but those cats dog on Mammoth way worse than anything I've read in the pedal world.

Actually, they probably weren't way wrong.  Both time I've had issues with Tayda, it's been the next product number up (i.e. if 100 uF caps were A-5617 and ferrite beads were A-5618).  And both times, I got a $15 store credit immediately.
