Title: Health update and also a sale
Post by: madbean on May 31, 2018, 05:38:59 PM
I want to say thanks again for all the well wishes over the past week or so. It's meant a lot to know so many people took the time out to write messages. I am feeling a lot better than I did a month ago when this started. Blood pressure is mostly under control and the bad head pressure has improved (although it does continue to be a problem). Anyway, I'm about 80% back to normal which is enough to get back to regular activity level.

The store has been re-stocked. It will still be a few more days before the Uber Tuber is released, though. I hope to have it available on Monday or Tuesday.

The following items are on sale: Deathklaw, Dirtbaby, Total Recall and Collosalus.
Blowout sale (deep discounts) on BaconBits, DigDug2, Sharkfin and Tapanator Bundle. The blowout sale items are not going to be carried regularly once they are gone so this is the last chance to get those for a good while.

Lastly a change to the RoadRage: it is now sold as a single board rather than two together. However, there is an option to purchase a panel of 6 for a 20% discount. The panel requires you to break them apart but it's easy to do (it's v-Scored).

Nice to see you on the mend, Brian.

You're tempting me with the Total Recall.  Three years from now when I have time to build it, I bet it would be fun.

For the record, it appears paypal's price for the Sharkfin is 1$ more than the price you have listed on the store page

(Not a big deal, consider my buck a donut donation, but thought you should be aware)

+1 and ordered!
I've had some Xvive bbds kicking around for a long time... The idea of actually finally building this is pretty exciting

great to hear you are feeling better! don't overdo it now and lay low for a bit. Focus on getting back to 100%, before going back to your daily routine

How can I not overdo it when I have all this to play with?

ok, I'll bite. what is that mahooosive board on the top left?

I see why this is tempting. Still, try not to get overwhelmed. Some easy soldering and tinkering sounds good to me, though. I think it's the business side that will get stressfull

That's the MicroSynth. Probably not a project I would offer on the regular but something I want to attempt to build.

BTW, for all those non-Americans who are curious: my ER visit which included a CT scan, EKG, blood test, zero medication and BP monitoring all done in about 2.5 hours (and probably less than 7 minutes with an actual doctor) came to over $2500 WITH insurance. Without: over $10k. That's how fucked up the USA is.

Glad you're better... and that bill and cost is really bad...
I had a three day stay in hospital here (in ER and two days ICU) with pacemaker inserted, test and and all follow up etc.
No private insurance. No cost to me. Glad to be out again with a ticker inserted.
I'm now on my third pacemaker (batteries go flat after approx 5 years).
Praise the public health service (even though not everything is ideal here too...),

Yeah man I was worried, I assumed you are self employed, how bad it would be. Itís stories like these that make me realize how lucky I am that my company provides really good health insurance. Though it could be a ploy to keep people from leaving.

We get insurance through my wife's company but the plan gets worse ALL THE TIME. I think our deductible is like $5k a year now.

The thing that gets me is that when you think you've paid your bill for a hospital visit, you haven't.  Separate bills for hospital, doctors, lab tests, etc., all arriving at different times, perhaps weeks apart.

Wowsers...Did a blood test a while ago...$250. I've set my personal deductible level quite high but basically my health bill for things like this will never exceed $800 a year. It could be less (at a higher monthly rate). That's the Netherlands :) Move over here Brian, we have cheaper postage too ;)

I was at the hospital for 2 days a few years back. Besides blood work and Xrays, they did not have to do any testing. I never saw a single bill...

I was in Germany several years ago and got hit on the head by an automated gate (stupid!) No real head injury but lots of blood. The building super and a local decided they should call an ambulance. Ambulance ride to hospital ER, short doctor examination (mostly in English, although I do speak a little German), gluing the cut back together, and clean-up. I took a tram back to the meeting and the whole thing took less than 2 hours; many people didn't even realize I was gone. Eventually they sent me a bill, which was about 240 Euros. It would have easily cost 5-10x in the US (maybe more) and taken much longer.  Such a bargain that I've thought about having all my subsequent head injuries in Europe.

Glad to hear you're OK, I struggle with BP as well (less of a problem when my weight is down, more of a problem when my weight is up, which is usually when I'm under a lot of stress, so it just compounds). I don't have the headache issues, but I do have unfavourable reactions to the meds and I've tried a number of them, so it's keep losing weight or dealing with the side effects.

As far as the health care cost thing goes, yeah, that sucks.  While I'm not the biggest fan of the Canadian system, it certainly enables everyone to have access to care (the expediency of that care is sometimes the issue).

Wow.  That's pretty full on.  We'd still pay out of pocket with insurance here for a trip to hospital and tests but nothing like that.  I recently went in for a contrast CT scan of my lungs, a heart monitor, IV etc and I seem to recall the hospital visit was $300 out of pocket and around $300 for the CT scan.   Ill stop complaining about medical bills I think :|

Australia is supposed to be reputed to have one of the best health systems in the world though apparently.  You can get free bulk billed doctor visits and there is obviously public hospitals but they are very good, some say just as good as private hospitals. I haven't been much to either fortunately so I wouldn't know.
