General Questions / Re: Setback / FX90 volume drop
December 26, 2022, 11:37:54 AM
The volume drop on this project had been a real disappointment, since the stock circuit sounds very good, but way too low in level to be usable. This weekend I simulated the circuit in LTSpice and found a couple mods worth experimenting with to achieve unity or even a boost in volume level:

If you add a much smaller value resistor (470 ohm-2.2k) in parallel to R7/10k the overall output level increases. I used a 1.5k (in parallel to the 10k = 1.3k), which doesn't hit the second op amp with too hot of a signal. Additionally, if you change the Mix pot to a higher value it will also increase the output level for all delay mix levels without changing the width of adjustment too much. I used a B25k, which in combination with the R7 change made the pedal completely gig-able with a few dBs of signal boost overall. With these two changes, the build doc's R48 18k to 47k swap isn't necessary. I thought the R48 swap changed the character of the stock pedal too much anyway by adding a lot more low frequencies with only getting a modest gain in output level.

The one trade-off I've found with the above mods is that the sweep of the Mix control changes, so the lower delay mix levels are a little harder to dial in, but I normally use delay levels set pretty high, same or louder than the clean signal, so it's not an issue for me. With the component values I chose, I don't hear any increase in distortion by hitting that last opamp stage with more signal, but I use a Tele with passive vintage output pickups, so YMMV.

Really nice graphics. All your builds on your site are impressive as well! I'd like to know more about how you go about creating your art files for the Tayda UV printing, you make it look so easy 8)

I'll reach out to the vendor and see what they say, the window is tight, "All returns need to be requested within 14 days from arrival and needs to be accepted by synthCube."
I should have read the description on their site more carefully (parentheses below are my comments, if it's not obvious):
"MN3005 bucket brigade delay analog IC- original NOS (heading for the description seems pretty straight forward, but...*)
Tested** , original manufacturer MN3005 BBD analog delay IC. Many of these on the market are counterfeit so we purchased a number of them . Video of testing is available on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in0wP-n3vEg-- so you can see and hear what you are buying. (Tested! Awesome! But...)

Some are NOS, some are pulled from old electronics. (ah, so not ALL are NOS as stated in the heading)
These are ORIGNAL MN3005 ICs, not the recently re-made Xvive version (true)
These ICs can be used to complete analog delay pedal projects, recently announced Blacet Time Machine kits, etc. (Not for me, but I'm still trying)
See a sample of the testing unit Time Machine at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-C1LT0XDfQ (cool)

*we use a sample testing method; not every IC is tested. (the real disclaimer I should have considered)

Tech Help - Projects Page / NOS MN3005s Bias or DOA?
March 26, 2022, 07:30:37 AM
I bought two NOS MN3005s from the recent Synthcube sale. I tried to use both in a Man O War Deluxe I built (chip sockets), but can't get them to bias at any settings (Bias 1 or Bias 2), to pass the delayed audio signal on pins 3 or 4 of each, even though the voltages are correct to the build guide, and an audio signal appears at both BBD chip input pins.
I have a Setback Delay that works perfectly with an Xvive MN3005, so I tried each NOS in that build, but can't get either of the NOS chips to bias or work in this either.
I don't have advanced testing tools like an oscilloscope, but I have successfully biased other BBD projects by ear, so are there any tips on how to get these to bias by changing the values of parts? or is it possible these are both DOA?

General Questions / SAD512D Projects?
October 29, 2021, 06:41:12 AM
I found an old Ensoniq synth pcb board in my junk pile with 4 SAD512D chips waiting to be pulled and tested—along with a bunch of NEC 4558s :) I'm not sure I can test these outside of a project. Any ideas for a decent DIY project that I can use at least one of the BBDs, and maybe all four if they're all good? Can a SAD512D simply replace other BBDs like MN3017, MN3019, MN3007, MN3009 in projects?

Nice color combo and custom artwork.
I have the build doc and I did the same damn thing - had to remove and replace all the pots. I've been trying to figure out how to add a switch to reverse the order of the effects to send the Screamer block into the Llama instead of the existing order as an option.

The Nevers - Steampunk/Fantasy/Sci-Fi that's way better than critics are reviewing. I think the Whedon stain is on this one, because I get the feeling that the critics haven't even watched it.

Mare of Easttown - A dark but decent True Detective set in my neck of the woods - SNL did a great spoof.

Jupiter's Legacy - Sometimes it seems like a live-action Incredibles, but has some of the noir grit that the awesome Watchmen series had. Heroes and/or Villains.

Thanks for the rec! I didn't get the deal you earlier takers did, but I sprung for it anyways because that enclosure is so cool and justifies the cost beyond a from scratch build. I'm really looking forward to building this  :)

Open Discussion / Re: Aion TriVibe Trouble
February 06, 2021, 03:18:20 PM
I have a working one of these, so I might be able to help. I can't tell from the pics - are you using a TL062 in the IC2 spot? I used a 4560. Also Aion uses that cool auxiliary switch board - is that wired correctly and with the power parts soldered in? Not sure the effect will work if the board isn't fully wired, but the bypass sound could.

My voltages at TL022 (pin 1-8, pots full up) are:
4.3 (slight fluctuation)
4.3
4.3

4.3 (slight fluctuation)
4.28 (slight fluctuation)
4.17 -4.45 (wide fluctuation)

My favorite pedal brand came out of nowhere after building a few clones - Barber Electronics.

Way Huge and EHX would tie for second place :-)

Wow, that is really beautiful. Great detail in the etch.

FYI that I ordered my TapLFOs from Electric Druid July 14 and they are still stuck in some postal limbo on the U.S. side. Tom has been great in responding to my inquiries and is confident that the shipments will arrive - just REALLY delayed. In fact it hasn't even been scanned here yet for tracking purposes.

Before Covid I always received parcels from him quickly, so it's definitely the current situation.

Sure, UPS is doing just f-i-i-i-i-ne >:(

I just realized that i didn't receive a 1MC 5% pot with my MB Tractor Beam board I ordered a few months ago. It says in the build doc that it's included, maybe it no longer is? Can I use a regular C1M - 1 Meg Reverse Log pot (10%) in it's place without much loss of functionality?

Open Discussion / Re: Mammoth Electronics Acquisition
October 08, 2019, 01:07:35 PM
Adding to my initial post, my last order included a painted enclosure with a major blemish that should never have been shipped. I contacted support again to see if i could get a discount or refund for the blem, and the wrong part, and there's been no further correspondence for a couple of weeks.
I wouldn't order anything from them now. Normally, they would rectify the usual bad orders, but the lack of email communication and public transparency about the state of their business, even while actively taking orders, is not good.

For others who order parts from Mammoth, I thought I would share this response from adminassist@mammothelectronics.c*m regarding a recent order with the usual wrong part.

"Mammoth Electronics is currently in negotiation to be acquired by another company. We will no longer be taking parts orders after October 15th. Due to this reason we are unable to give you a credit for the part, but are more than happy to refund you.

Please let us know if we can assist you with anything else.

Thank you for your business,
  Mammoth Electronics"
