Open Discussion / Anyone in KY?
April 29, 2023, 12:35:39 AM
Hey guys, I have a favor to ask if someone who is in Kentucky. Someone bought a pedal I built like 13 years ago, and after a decade of use it needs some love (read: tech help). I no longer really build, and I'm moving this summer, and having him send it to me would be less than advised at this time.

If someone is in the Lexington or Louisville area, or knows someone in that area who could help this guy, please send me a message.

Open Discussion / Home Networking questions
January 06, 2021, 06:01:51 PM
Hey, do we have anyone who is really tech savvy and up on how run a home new around these parts? I'm trying to figure our how to accomplish setting up my physical home network which has some particular challenges and I'm unsure on how to google the answers (or rather, all i'm getting with google are things that aren't helpful).

Wouldn't mind a zoom chat or even an email chat with someone for whom this is their field.

Open Discussion / Eagle vs Diptrace
November 30, 2019, 12:49:20 AM
Hey guys. I am looking for help with understanding some of the differences between Eagle and Diptrace. It used to be the only resource for PCB making on a Mac was Eagle, so I've only ever used Eagle. Now I see that Diptrace has a Mac version, yay! I love using Eagle, and I'm good with how it works. I'm known for having some Eagle tutorials out there, and I'm glad I've helped so many. However, I've been stuck using an ancient license and limited to the 100x80mm board size. A couple of my clients might want me to make larger boards. So here's a few questions I have.

- Does diptrace really only care about pin numbers? I can have a really large board, but as long as I stay within the pin count I'm fine?
- How intuitive is it to switch over? Am I gonna struggle to export my Gerbers and images for my Build Docs, or is it pretty much the same?
- How is it to import/use my old Eagle Libraries?

Open Discussion / Laser/CNC Acrylic plates?
September 11, 2019, 06:26:48 PM
Hey guys,

I don't know if I've missed something along the way, but I'm wondering if there's anyone out there doing CNC/Laser acrylic plates these days? If I provided a SVG file, could I get one done up as a faceplate for a pedal?

I've never really noticed this before. I know that my Forum participation has heartily decreased in recent years, and I've been passed for total post count, but I bet my hours are some of the highest. How much time have you wasted invested in this place!

91 days, 17 hours, and 45 minutes.

Open Discussion / Pedalboard rebuild Time!
October 04, 2018, 06:20:27 PM
Hardcore rebuild happening.

Got a new pedal in, thought I'd try it out, and decided to go up from my PT-Jr I was running a long while, and get up to the PT-3 again. There is no extra space on this one...

Of note, I'm down for finding another overdrive. I have a pedal on there that Pickdropper did the enclosure on, and I want to put it back on another board, so, if anyone has a really good overdrive they want to trade... the kicker is that it has to be 125B sized with top mount jacks. Fancy enclosures/art is always fun...

But on to the build. The board is a PT-3 from Pedaltrain, and I'm trying to power it all off one Voodoo Lab 4x4 power unit. Signal chain is:
Barber Tone Press > Musicomlab EFX MkIV - Loop 1: Micro POG; Loop 2: ClusterFuzz; Loop 3: ARC Big Green; Loop 4: Skreddy Clone; Loop 4: Honeydrive Clone; Loop 6: Klon Clone; Volume Loop: EB Jr; Loop 7: Empress Tremolo; Loop 8: CE-2 Clone; Loop 9: TimeLine; Loop 10: BigSky

With the lack of space and the tight jacks on the EFX MkIV, I have to make new cables. I decided to order these new Square Plugs from Redco, and some Mogami 2314. They're in the mail. I also have to finish up the power wiring. I have two sets of pedals that are grouped on a couple of the 4x4 channels. I'm worried about how much I'm gonna make that power unit work.

I'll try an upload some images. I'll have more as I build.

Open Discussion / Reverb Class A Article
June 27, 2018, 04:14:18 PM
Got this in an email this morning. Actually a really good article, including a moderate amount of technical depth, about the difference between Class A, Class B, and Class AB amps. Thought I'd pass it along.

https://reverb.com/ca/news/what-is-a-class-a-amp-anyway-the-truth-behind-myths-and-misconceptions

Anyone else impressed with some of the Reverb articles that get released? Every once in a while I'm left impressed.

I'm spending some of tonight doing some 'winter cleaning'. Lame.

But on the plus side, I think I have a somewhat ready plan for my PT-Hr rewrite. Only hesitation is that I'm not super happy with the Reverb location. I'd rather have a delay pedal there.

I watch all the Stew Mac vids, but this one is really cool. It reminds me how awesome and innovative the DIY community can be. I feel like many of the guys and gals around here are following in the footsteps of guys like Jake.

Yep. Me and the wife are heading up to S'toon to go see Tedeshi Trucks band tonight. Top 5 guitar player for me, a dream to get to see them live.

By someone only slightly famous? Like a touring pro, who nobody knows, but has played behind people we do?

I see ads for musical instruments regularly on online community environments (eg. Facebook). Sometimes these ads include things like, "this guitar was owned and played by guitarist X, whom you've never heard of, but has played with sting, rush, led zeppelin, jefferson airfield, beck, kanye, and many others!" (fictional ad, no such musician exists I expect). You get the drift.

Does this instrument become worth more somehow? Inevitably, the person selling is asking top or above the top dollar for their instrument.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Moodring weird issue
December 06, 2014, 10:17:57 PM
So, I'm working on a Moodring, and I have the most bizarre issue. I'm hoping some of you have some idea where I should start. I rarely can't find a solution on my own, so it's a major puzzler for me. I did spend about 3 hours on this issue so far.

Anyway... my Moodring PCB is exhibiting the following behaviour:

1. With power and all chips in, the 9V power rail drops down to about 5V.
2. VB drops down to about 2.5V
3. The Reg is putting out about 4V

The weird thing is that when I remove the 5V Regulator, everything goes like this:

1. The Power rail is up to about 9.3V
2. VB is up to 4.65V
3. Obviously theres no REG in so I don't get any regulator readings.

I've resoldered, triple checked every thing, and I'm pretty confident in my ability to see these sorts of things. I just need someone to give me some idea on what it could be.

I've got a guy who wants a dumblesque pedal, but I know little about them. Is the Zendrive what he's wanting or is the ROG Umble or something else gonna be better?

Open Discussion / Dual Humbucker Solidbody Guitars
October 16, 2014, 02:15:49 AM
What's your fav?

Me personally, I can't stand 4 knob guitars. I like Master Volume and Tone setups, so for me the Les Paul family of guitars really is rough. I own an Epi Dot, which is 4 knob, but I like it for other reasons. I have always moved along anything I've ever had that had 4 knobs.

All that to say, I don't really have a good dual humbucker solid body. I've had some PRS SE guitars that I liked but haven't stuck. I also have a set of Humbuckers from my favourite Pickup guy, Tom Anderson, ready to drop into some dual hum bucker guitar.

I think my dream setup would be a bolt on neck Les Paul Junior type of guitar with a wraparound, master Vol/Tone and 3 way switch, with a pair of humbuckers. I can't find a custom guitar maker who builds something like that and who will let me do the finish work...

What's your favourite Dual Humbucker Solidbody and why?

Open Discussion / Soldering & Desoldering Stations
October 15, 2014, 02:20:36 AM
This Christmas I'm getting a new Soldering/Desoldering station, and I'm looking for options. So what do you have? What do you like, what don't you? I'm on a budget, but I don't mind looking around for various options.
