I just thought I'd leave a note about my experience with the Polyphase. The Polytrog is the first version I've built that worked totally correctly. And the only version that included the thermistor as an option. I built the Polytrog without it. I live in Minnesota and we have pretty extreme weather swings as well as home, rehearsal, and gig spot conditions. After a bit I noticed the bias was swinging. As much as 0.5v. Which is enough to deactivate (or over-do) the envelope modulation. I decided to pop a thermistor in there and now its stable to within 0.05v from 50f-100f.
I got the part for a paltry $0.11 from Tayda, and ultimately it was necessary for my build and use conditions. I'm thankful for its inclusion on the pcb.

It's a weird value that I haven't seen on the previous itinerations. What's that all about and can I get by with a close sub 1.3 1.5?

Build Reports / Edgelord Bass Filter
February 13, 2021, 04:56:23 PM
This was a really rewarding build. It can get so wet it snaps like a bully's towel. Finally got to use an old bakelite chicken head knob I grabbed off an ancient voltage measuring tool.

If i wanted to build these stock without the mod pots, what do i need to add/jumper?

I really enjoy this one. Basically a Mutron without the envelope. Instead its run by the 8 waveform StompLFO chip. HUGE range on the controls all the way up to oscillation. The Sample/Hold and Random Slope waves are especially nice. But mostly i think i like it as an alternative to phase shifting.

Build Reports / DEFX Fuzzimile (spaceman gemini iii)
September 18, 2018, 08:49:07 AM
No chrome, custom hardware, or military spec wiring. But I like it just the same. Very nice project and documentation by Dead End Fx. The Ge side plays like a Harmonic Percolator/Face, and the Si side reminds me of the Sam Ash Fuzzz or Roland Bee Baa depending on the tone setting. Mixed together is like a one-man-stoner-band. This has inspired me to experiment with running some of my favorite fuzzes in parallel.

Open Discussion / Diy or pedal related tattoos?
September 01, 2018, 12:07:12 AM
My fiance is a tattoo artist. She has done a bunch for me in this caricature woodblock style. Do any of you have hobby related tattoos?

I'm building this one, 9v version, with top mount dc jack and bottom side mount i/o jacks. I want to wire it to a 3pdt switch board with the led and i/o jacks connected to it. I'm scratching my head on the I O R & S pads. How do i go about omitting j1 &j2 and connect properly to my i/o switch board pads? Also, if i jumper the collosalus onboard clr r34, that means i can pull +9v off the byp + pad, correct?

General Questions / Axis fuzz pot question
June 15, 2017, 07:38:20 PM
Trying to use up bastard parts. Does anyone know if i stuck a 1kc pot in place of the standard 2kb fuzz pot on an Axis fuzz, would i lose the upper or lower gain range? I'm ok to suck it and see, but any smarts would be helpful.

...And an hour later I get this Email about my post:
"We seriously pursue those who clone our products and violate our trademarked intellectual property. Cease and desist the cloning of Z.Vex products and use of our name and names of our products. It's also disheartening you would do this to a local company.

LOL. OK. So my listing is for a Mutron II and a Mutron III clone, and that is the only thing mentioned. No other pedals, or brands. So do these guys own Musitronics now? I looked them up, and they ARE a local company, (twin cities MN), but I don't see how I'm a competitor to them. I can't see that they even MAKE Mutron-like stuff.

Open Discussion / Infrared LED love
September 23, 2016, 11:12:23 PM
I have been using infrared leds in builds lately and i cant endorse them enough. As clippers they have the lowest forward voltage of leds. They couple well in circuits that switch between led and silicon clipping. The volume jump between modes is less severe but the led crunch is retained. I like them in the symetrical section of the tube screamer with silicon in the asymetrical. They also work great for "blackout" leds to complete circuits with unwanted indicators.

I'm building a current lover 2015 and use 3pdt convenience boards. I'm omitting the loop and wiring the in and out Jacks to the switch board. How do I get the input and output correctly off the main board. The jack pads and L, S, I, R, and O pads have me confused. Thank you

I've been finding too much conflicting information to continue. Need your expertise. I found some germanium transistors and can't find a datasheet for them. they are marked "Mullard OC42 Brittish Made". I've been reading articles and watching videos, about 20 in total and have learned how to use the diode checker  on my multimeter to determine pnp or npn. These are pnp. I can also identify slight difference in voltage drop between either collector-base and emitter-base. What is conflicting is every other lesson states that the higher voltage drop is EITHER. As in half say the emitter is the higher reading, and half state the collector is the higher reading, for both pnp or npn. This is driving me nuts. Please help me learn how to determine the pinout of these. I don't have a tranny tester, I don't have a test circuit, i don't have sockets, but i want to be sure they go in the right way 'round. And learn how to emperically test. I also assume that hooking them up backwards can ruin them.

Open Discussion / NGD * PCB Pickguard content.
May 06, 2015, 03:36:21 PM
I just got my Man or Astroman? Star Crunch signature Hallmark guitar. It came with a nifty custom pcb pickguard. This is my first new guitar in over 25 years. I've been using the same Jazzmaster and Bass VI since before Nirvana was a band. I just couldn't say NO to this thing. It plays a like a dream. Very modern ideas on a classic vintage design. Now I have to fight the urge to start populating the pickguard. There are some through-hole mounts that are begging for LEDs.

Build Reports / My Doppleganger 2.1d build
March 22, 2015, 12:20:23 PM
This was an awesome project. Thanks to everyone who brought this beautiful pcb into being.  I omitted the pedal control jacks, spectral bypass mode, and dry out and I made the mode switches into toggles. It sounds fantastic and went together easy.

Build Reports / Madbean NomNom phaser
February 27, 2015, 11:02:02 AM
Been on a phaser jag lately, built most of them available. This one is very nice. I think I'm done with phasers until a polyphase or simplified doppelgänger comes along on a nice pcb.

Build Reports / Naughty Fish + Schooner = ?
February 11, 2015, 06:48:13 AM
...Fish 'n' Boat ?!

This works great. Jubal81's Schooner clean blend switch board and Madbean's Naughty Fish filter. Getting some serious Mike Gordon and OOiOO sounds out of this. Love the Schooner. I want to add it to all of my modulation/filters. I reversed 1 & 3 of the blend pot so that it decreases clean as it's turned up.

I think it's finally time i dip into the muff. Can any of you muff buffs out there tell me what the quietest running variants are? Especially of the skreddy tuned versions. I'm a fuzz guy so i'm used to quiet dirt. That white hiss on distortions drives me nuts. So do noise gates.
