Build Reports / MuAmp meets Rangemaster
August 21, 2022, 03:44:05 PM
This one is nothing revolutionary but sounds amazing and was fun to develop: idea -> LTspice -> breadboard -> eagle -> final build
I've always liked the way jfet boosters and overdrives sound with solid state amps (the kind of amp I play the most) and so I've decided to try some MuAmp with a Range potentiometer of sorts that mixes a 2u2 bypass cap in parallel with a 100n.

I've used two 2sk117-Gr transistors, that give just a tiny bit of dirt with single coils. It distorts a bit more with humbuckers, but is cleaner than a typical rangemaster.

General Questions / Mixing BBDs and clock brands
August 08, 2022, 01:46:49 PM
Hey guys, how are you doing?

I'm itching to order some v3208 chips and build me some analog delay, however, the v3102 is nowhere to be found.
What I do have is a little stash of mn3102.

My question is: can a combo MN3102 V3208 work?

Thanks!

General Questions / Radio Interference in pedals
April 15, 2022, 03:13:10 PM
Hey folks! How are you all doing?
I've recently had some bad luck with pedals and RFI.
I've usually been able to deal with it (with varying degrees of success) using low pass filters (RC) in the power supply and at the input of the circuit. It works ok, most of the time, but seems to be a bit random.
Is there anything else I could be doing to improve it?

Build Reports / Earthquaker Bellows
October 18, 2021, 11:32:33 AM
Some three years ago, I posted a question about making a darlington pair out of two BJTs for the Bellows. Breadboarded it and it worked nice, but I've decided to wait and buy a proper MPSA13.
Fastforward to last weekend, I have finally remembered to order the MPSA13, but all of a sudden, I can't wait 3 days for the order to arrive and build the pedal using a pair of matched 2n3904 (hfe=190, if my multimeter can be trusted), and I'm happy I did, cause it sounds awesome.

Simple graphics and messy guts for you to enjoy:

Open Discussion / Impedance matching on SS power amp
February 06, 2021, 08:40:42 AM
Hello, everybody!
Hope everyone is doing well!

I messed up the jack in the preamp of my SS combo and I've been using the aux input until I can have it fixed. However, there is an impedance mismatch (aux input impedance is 100k and preamp input impedance is 1M) that I believe is making it sound dull (even if I use a separate preamp).

Will a DI box make it better (I have all the necessary components at home, already)?

Build Reports / Crab Phaser (Phase 45/67.5)
January 16, 2021, 01:20:53 PM
Hello everyone! I wish you all a happy 2021!

This is a long postponed build: Phase 45 with a switchable third stage.

Controls are Rate and Mix (50/50 wet and dry to 100% wet).

Hammond boxes are now too expensive in Brazil, so I've adapted an electrical box. It's a bit taller than a 1590bb, but a bit smaller.

Hi guys,

I was studying this schematic
https://hiwatt.org/Schematics/DR_Pre4Input_v2.pdf

and was confused by the second triode of V3 (pins 1-3)? What is it doing?

Thanks

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has tips for etching dual layer pcbs (mostly how to get both sides well aligned)

Thanks

General Questions / Use suggestions for 4069BE
March 30, 2020, 11:43:55 AM
I ordered a few 4069 expecting them to be the unbuffered type (was going to experiment with the gain stage of the sunn beta) and was disappointed to find out they were the buffered ones.

Does anyone know of fun projects to put the 4069BE to use?

Build Reports / Modified Plexi Drive
December 25, 2018, 10:57:04 AM
Hey guys,

2018 was a slow year regarding diy pedals (writing a MSc Thesis takes a lot of time), but I'm really happy with how I ended it.
This is a Plexi Drive clone followed by the tone section of the Charlie Brown V4 (thanks to Bugg for the schematics).
I had some 2sk117 that biased perfectly in place of the J201 and I really like how it sounds. The active tone stack gives lots of options.

General Questions / Darlington from two common BJTs
November 08, 2018, 07:11:28 AM
Hi guys,

I've just ordered some parts and totally forgot to order a darlington (MPSA 13 for the bellows)
Will two cascaded npn BJTs work the same?
What should I look for hfe-wise?  (I have some 2222s, some 2n3904, etc)

Thanks

Build Reports / EQD Monarch - Clone
January 15, 2018, 01:34:01 PM
This is a clone of an EQD Monarch.
Since I had no 2n5457 available but had some 2sk246 at hand (SGD pinout) I designed the board.
Decided to go for the horizontal layout (not very practical, but nice looking IMHO)

It sounds wonderful, with really "natural sounding" overdrive
Guts are rather messy, but this thing is really quiet.

Build Reports / Lovesqueeze Clone
November 20, 2017, 09:12:25 AM
Hi guys!
Rothwell Lovesqueeze on a layout I put together
One of those compressors you don't notice is on, until you turn it off
Really silent for a compressor

Build Reports / Delay build - Cave Dweller + mods
January 27, 2017, 02:46:56 PM
Hey forum,
Too long since my last report (year abroad + unsuccessful builds).
It's a BMP tonestack + LPB-1 feeding into a Cave Dweller (old version) without the Echo pot, and the modulation board from the Aquaboy BL3208.
The BMP tonestack allows me to control a bit the overall tone of the circuit and I think it's an interesting thing to add.
Guts are a mess (extra power filtering and millenium bypass didn't help tidying things up) and external appearance is ok IMO, nothing great though.
Box is an electrical box.
Hope you enjoy.

Hi folks,
This is a build report of a cmos switch based phaser. It's an amazing project by Fredrik Lyxzén.
Sounds very nice, I think it has some of that OTA phaser character. There are also some crazy vowel sounds.
And best part is components are easily and cheaply obtained.
This was my first time etching an enclosure, thanks to Selfdestroyer for the great tutorial. Things are not perfectly aligned but I like it a lot

Build Reports / Madbean Slambox
April 20, 2015, 10:37:23 AM
This is my take on the Madbean Slambox.
Smallest box I've ever used (not a 1590a, though). It's a box for electrical applications that I've adapted.
The dimensions are approximately 90mm x 50mm x 40mm
The small daughterboard is for improved power filtering (47ohm resistor and 220nF film capacitor)

Build Reports / Madbean EgoDriver for a friend
April 05, 2015, 02:02:00 PM
This is a EgoDriver I recently finished for a friend. He asked for the skull as it's some kind of trademark of his.
The 3pdt wiring isn't what I call neat, but everything works fine, so I'll let it be.
I've decided not to use the clipping switch, because in mine I only use mosfet clipping and I think it sounds way better.

Evening, folks,

I would like to know if I could use an icl7660scpa instead of the tc1044 (can't find the latter within a reasonable price range)
From the info I've gathered they have similar characteristics (max voltage, current output, etc), but better safe than sorry, I guess

Thanks

Build Reports / Electric Mistress - Non Madbean
March 19, 2015, 12:50:07 PM
Hi folks,
This is my take on a MN3207 based Electric Mistress. Project is available at DIYSB (google EM3207 v1.1).
It's a great project by member Thomeeque (is he around here?).
Lots of components but I took my time and this one was a huge success. It's definitely my most complex build to date.
Sounds great (a little more subtle than the original I guess)
It's also my first build in which I'm completely happy with the looks. Hope you enjoy too.

But I digress, let's cut to the pics:

And the guts:

Build Reports / Madbean Quasar
March 08, 2015, 04:34:42 PM
Hi guys,
Sharing my take on madbean quasar (built to RC booster specs).
Photos are kind of lame, but that's what I have for now.
Used one of made of tone's techniques for labeling: http://madeoftone.tumblr.com/drytransfers2
