Audio/Video Demos / Total Recall Proto Demo
February 26, 2016, 11:57:31 PM
A few months ago Bean was kind enough to do a giveaway of the total recall boards that hadn't been released yet. The only stipulation was that we needed to give some sort of feedback and that doing a demo, although not required, would be nice. It's been forever and I finally got around to recording a little bit of the pedal, and I gotta say, it's awesome.

I used 2x mn3008s, a strat plus, into a '67 super reverb with the reverb off on the amp. Pedal sounds awesome. I've never gotten to try an old memory man, but I have had a memory man xo which I loved and it sounds very very comparable. Here are some clips of it. Don't mind the mistakes and whatnot just wanted to get some of it out there! [emoji41]

Obviously gotta do dotted eighth edge style, song is edge of desire by John Mayer.

Some swells literally with just the TR and nothing else, no reverb no second delay.

Last one just playing around, delay might've been a little louder than it should've been, but just wanted to make sure the delay would've been heard using my phone.

Awesome pedal!

Tech Help - Projects Page / 8ball oscillating
October 16, 2014, 07:55:03 PM
Anyone else have their 8ball oscillate on the down position of the dpdt switch? It oscillates when I turn the gain up pretty high, maybe the last 20-30%.

Should I switch out anything? (Resistors, diodes)

Other than that this build screams! Talk about adding volume to the original design! It's pretty awesome

Tech Help - Projects Page / Kingslayer 2 weird gain knob
September 16, 2014, 12:47:45 PM
I just built a kingslayer 2 and the gain knob is doing something weird. I understand that since it is a dual gang pot, it blends the clean and dirty signal. My KS is doing something weird that none of the other 4 or so klones I've made have done.

When the gain is all the way down its clean and when it's all the way up, there is a distorted signal. But the weird thing is when halfway it's almost as if the signal drops out, and loses db's.

So say it's at 0db when gain is all the way down and when you turn it up it goes to -10db and is still really clean and seems like the sound sort of disappears and then when a little past halfway the db level comes back up. When gain is dimed the db level is back to 0db and is dirty, although the distorted signal that is present isn't what I imagined it to sound like. Obviously something is wrong so the dimed gain sound probably isn't what it's supposed to sound like.

I perused tech help for KS posts and found one that Bean gave voltages for the tl074 (I swapped it in instead of the tl274 that he said might be better). My voltages seemed low to me, especially since there's a pump, on pin 1 of the 1044 I think I was getting somewhere around 5.7V. Shouldn't that be the input V which would be around 9V? So because pin 1 was 5.7V, pin 4 on the tl074 was 5.7V as well.

What could I possibly be missing? I'm in class right now so I can't post pics or voltages for all pins but if anyone wants me to when I get home I can.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Moodring Help!
August 26, 2014, 12:23:34 AM
Just got it in the mail today and was WAAAY too excited to build it. Was missing a few capacitors/resistors so I decided to sub some parts here and there (ex. instead of a 20k resistor, just put a 22k resistor in, and instead of a film capacitor, just used a ceramic one, among others...). Also was short a 1n5817, so i subbed a 1n34 in. Fired her up and all i heard was some pretty loud static with the dry signal in the background. There was either no static at all, or the smallest turn of the ring knob would make it loud. Almost oscillation-ish...So i checked the voltages and compared them to the ones at the end of the build doc, and for the most part all the voltages were off.

Decided that D1 (1n34) was the culprit so I switched it out for a 1n914 and it brought the input voltage back up, but it was still short about .5 a volt (~8.7V). The first pins of all the IC were closer to the voltages at the end of the build doc but like i thought it was going to be, they were all short maybe .4-.5 volts compared to what they should be. I should mention all the rest of the pins were all off considerably.

I ran her through my amp and signal passes both when signal is on and off and when playing with the trimmer, if put to the extreme, I got oscillation. But there is no sign of reverb at all regardless of where the knobs are, effect is basically not there and then oscillating.

I'm taking a break until tomorrow, since starting it, populating, and then diagnosing, it's probably been 5-6 hours (need a fresh perspective tomorrow!) but can anyone tell me what could possibly be the culprit? I checked the orientations of all the electros and they're all fine, checked the diode orientations, and save for going through all the values, could there be something i'm overlooking?

Still kind of new to diagnosing (luckily 99% of my pedals fire right up, and the ones that don't are because of simple fixes like pots shorting on the board, not grounded, flipped tip and sleeve cables, etc.), HALP!!! I MUST HAVE TOANZ!

Build Reports / Road Rage
August 16, 2014, 11:23:32 AM
I caved in and instead of waiting for the dirtbag to come out, I bought a DMM XO, but the guy I bought it from didn't send the ac adapter and so I needed to improvise. I had an altoid can laying around (was still deciding whether or not to be cool like every other guitarist with picks in the can and put it on my board :P) so I figured, eh don't need to waste a normal sized enclosure on the tiny rage. Thought it was funny so here you go!

Build Reports / Queen of Bone
August 16, 2014, 11:17:24 AM
Finished up rullywowrs queen of bone (king of tone clone) and I have to say, it's freaking awesome. Does the on the verge of breakup on one side perfectly, while the other side...well let's just say it can get thick!

I've had it for a little while now, but the posca pens I ordered on amazon just came in so took it apart and I painted it up a little bit. This was my first time using posca pens so go easy on me. Also, when putting the pedal back in, something weird happened where one side would start oscillating when the gain was turned up. After soldering and desoldering a couple things for an hour or so (which is why there are some burn marks) I gave up. Came back the next day and realized the pot legs were touching each other so put a few pieces of electrical tape in between them and between the pots without covers and the board. Not my tidiest work, but meh, good enough! Works great now!

General Questions / JHS Moonshine
July 30, 2014, 08:14:55 PM
I've been looking around (here, FSB, DIYSB), and I can't seem to find exactly what JHS did to the TS to make it into the moonshine. I know they changed it to 18v, but not sure what else they've done...can anyone shed some light?

Tech Help - Projects Page / Grounding issue?
May 21, 2014, 10:06:12 PM
Hey all!

I just recently put together a guitarpcb KOTB and came across a weird issue.

I know I should put up pictures and voltages but I figure I just throw out my initial questions and see if it's a simple general fix 😛

When plugged in to power/guitar/amp I get a loud buzz both effect on and off. The gain knob when turned on if turned up makes the pedal whine in almost an oscillation fashion. Could just be the whine goes up in frequency. It seems to me like its a grounding issue but I don't even know where to begin

I had just used an audio probe to find where the issue could lie but the weird thing was when the effect was off, I could pass signal through the input jack. I would touch the probe to the sleeve tab as well as the guitar cable sleeve while it was plugged in and signal passed, but weird thing is when I turned effect on, signal cut out at the source. I touched the probe to the sleeve tab and even the cable sleeve and nothing which made me think it had something to do with grounding shorting out the jacks...but I'm clueless.

This is maybe my 17th build or so since I started this obsession in January...(?) I guess I've been lucky because every pedal that I've made has had zero issues upon finishing building and starting up with the few instances of misplaced wires and so my troubleshooting skills are a bit lacking. The only things I know how to do are check if the wiring is correct, solder bridges, orientation of ics/trans, cold solder joints

Is this an easy fix, am I overlooking something?

If this needs pictures, no problem I can have them up, please please pedal gurus HELP!!! 😫

Hey all, I've built aions cerulean build 2x and I've put them into one box. It sounds great! Only problem I have is the noise floor it has when both are engaged at the same time. It's not major by any means but I have someone interested in it and I'd rather them not have to deal with noise (don't think they'd be interested in it...). I thought it was the optional diodes that you can put in them but I took out the high gain side and the noise is still there a little.

I know noise is inherent in some distortion/od pedals, but I was wondering if there was anything I can do to this circuit to eliminate some of the noise...

Here's some gut shots and any help would be really appreciated!

Been trying to find an end all be all wiring diagram to combine two pedals but so far, for what I need I can't find it and I'm sure you guys could help...

I've been building a rub a dub reverb and a multiplex jr that I want to put into one enclosure. I was inspired after I saw this YouTube clip

http://youtu.be/ADgG0TgYh08

I'm still new to all of this as of now I'm still in the paint by number phase and don't quite understand how to combine the two boards and run them in series so that I only need one 3pdt. When I click it on both the reverb and the delay turn on and vice versa. I have seen this diagram

http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/two_in_one_wiring.pdf

The only thing that doesn't work for me is the intention to just have one on/off switch.

Help anyone? Oh and I also want to use the 1776 3pdt board if possible which I have on hand

Tech Help - Projects Page / Aion refractor klone
February 05, 2014, 05:15:57 PM
I'm building a Klone and everything looks good. The bypass signal works perfectly fine and the values should all be correct. Only thing is when I turn it on the signal gets really really quiet to where it almost sounded like it didn't work. I could vaguely tell it was on and when I cranked my amp the signal was there just really really clean. The gain knob and the tone knob doesn't work, and the volume knob does work.

This is literally the second pedal that I've made so I don't know how or what to diagnose...I do know caps 19, 20, and 21 were getting really hot after maybe being plugged in for 3-5 minutes. What can I do to start diagnosing things? I've read a ton of diagnosing posts but there are none that I saw that layer things out for a noob like me. I can posts pictures if you guys want? I have a dmm but I don't know what or how to use it in a way that could help diagnose things for me... :(

Help!

Build Reports / The Darkside Kingslayer
February 05, 2014, 02:43:53 PM
My first pedal ever! Never picked up a soldering iron before this but have always wanted to build my own pedal...so addicting! I've already started 3 more haha!

One thing that happens that I don't understand is when the OD is on "heavier OD" and the clipping switch is in one particular position (all the way to one side), if I turn the gain up all the way and strum the guitar super hard the overdrive cuts out and it starts this humming sound that repeats itself and slowly gets louder and louder. I don't know what oscillation sounds like but if I were to guess, that would be it. All of the components are what they should be as far as values are concerned although I put a 1N4742 diode instead of one 1n34a...it's weird because the OD switch is a SPDT which should have been a SPST but it still works and the clipping switch is the right one but no matter what position it's in, the sound doesn't change. Anyone?

Oh some pics  ;D

Hey guys I literally just started soldering last night on a mb kingslayer board. I had ordered parts online and ordered all ceramic and electrolytic capacitors...but when the kingslayer board came in yesterday I realized that I needed to order film box capacitors for a couple of the joints. As I don't have non polarized caps and I don't wanna wait another 2 weeks to get more caps before finishing this project could someone tell me which way to put the polarity of the electrolytic caps relative to the pcb that madbean sends you and not the self etched ones? I love diy pcbs it's so much fun! And I love this forum I can see myself doing this instead of buying made pedals from now on...
