Tech Help - Projects Page / Nautilus Volume?
March 25, 2018, 03:47:19 PM
Hey all, I successfully made a Nautilus a couple of years ago and I dig it a lot. However, the volume is way out of whack for any practical use. The internal trimmer is all the way down (CCW) as per instructions but the sensitivity knob has to be up around noon to trigger with most of my pickups and at that point it's just too loud. Has anybody messed with changing the trimmer pot value or other solution for this issue?

Thanks!

So I built me a Pepper Spray on a Haberdasher board a few years ago but only boxed it up today (the reason for that may have to do with a certain Silicon Percolator variant that didn't blow my skirt up). Now having heard good things about the OA126, I bought a pair for this build then grabbed a few more for later projects.

What got me curious is that the second batch don't look like the first pair (see photo). The first ones are slightly bigger, have thicker gold leads and a matte finish while the second set are glossy and writing is oriented different.

Naturally I had to test both just to be sure...

The original pair offered just a bit of breakup compared to no clipping diodes. It was definitely a good sound but not dramatically different from lifted diodes. The second (glossy) pair sound even better! Equally loud but more hair, thus a nicer middle ground between the stock geranium clipping and no diodes for a better distinction between the 3 toggle settings.

So what  do you think the situation is here? Did Telefunken switch appearance on these from time to time (like tube manufacturers) or did I get duped into buying some fakes?

Here are the requisite pics:

Open Discussion / Doing a Gain Changer -got a question
November 20, 2016, 06:56:18 PM
Hey all, I don't see many posts about this one.

I have my vero wired up as per IvIark http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.ca/2014/04/barber-gain-changer.html but I can't understand the on-off-on EQ toggle.
They show a lead going to lug 1 and 3 of the switch but what about lug 2?

Thanks if you can help!

I have a Sunking that isn't working. I damaged the traces in 2 spots as I soldered a couple of parts wrong and had to make little jumpers. It is a pretty cramped board when populated!

I'm no good at debugging and don't know bout audio probing, etc. However, I would like to get a new PCB and reuse as many parts as I can since they cost money and probably most of them are fine.

Any suggestions on how to go about recovering as many parts as I can? My plan was to break the PCB little by little and desolder each component then test each one. Open to suggestions...

Thanks!

Open Discussion / Loud Button WTF
July 16, 2014, 07:10:55 AM
Hey guys and gals, anybody have experience with the Loud Button WTF? Seems awful cool.
I've wanted one since I heard about it, but can't pony up that kind of cash for a single pedal (with limited usefulness).

Open Discussion / Mods to Pepper Spray?
June 26, 2014, 06:19:25 AM
Hi all, I like my pepper spray a lot. However I think I could get a little more flexibility out of it. Here is what I am thinking:

1) The gain control is pretty useless.Guitar volme is all that's needed if I want to clean it up, so I'm planning to ditch it.

2) A tone control might do well to help give more range, and based on the Catalinbread Karma Suture, I think they implement an input cap blend knob much like a DAM Red Rooster. I have a Red Rooster clone and it is an extremely effective knob to tailor the sound. In fact, with no clipping diodes, the Pepper Spray sounds pretty much like a good germanium clean boost.

3) A clipping blend knob would be great, and again I think CBread did exactly this. However, I'm not sure what value pot to use.

4) I'd like more volume from the 1N695 setting. I can't think how to do this, but was planning to put a boost after it (probably Sunking) in the same enclosure.

What are some mods you have done or know about?

I saw this guy, seems interesting:

On a side note, I started off thinking the diode switch was kind of useless. I even bought 2 (Very) expensive OA126's for the second slot. Overall, I liked the stock configuration best. Yeah, it was the most quiet and pretty compressed, but I wanted more fuzz than overdrive and this setting gave me that sound. THEN I tried different guitars and realized how much the pickups matter. IMO, the toggle switch will let you adjust the compression level for the type of guitar (singles, P90, humbuckers).

I know it's a simple concept, except that I'm near the limit of my technical abilities.

I built a Pepper Spray (Harmonic Percolator) and Love it.

I built a Sunking (v3) and it's not working. I WAS going to wire these 2 pcb's into a 1590BB, but I have new and improved ideas.

I know the Klon is a dirt section with a clean blend. Has anybody tried to isolate just the clean blend and add their own unrelated dirt section?

If it was possible, I would use my Pepper spray for the ratty breakup and the clean blend form the Sunking because that's what I loved most about my Klons. There is a beefy low mid oomph with sparkle that no other pedal seems to get.

Would this be as straightforward as leaving out part of the Sunking circuit and replacing it with Pepper Spray?

Thanks

Open Discussion / Pepper Spray + What?
May 20, 2014, 12:57:52 PM
I'm building a Pepper Spray (just waiting for some parts in the mail). I want to pair it up with another effect in a single enclosure but I can't decide which.

I have a Red Rooster clone and a Sunking board that might be good candidates. I will use a 4PDT so that I can run one into the other, or vice-versa.

My main problem is that I don't know where the Pepper Spray will work best -first in chain or last? My Klon sounded best last as a clean boost, but the Red Rooster sounded better first to goose other pedals.

What say you?

General Questions / Sunking v3 w. OPA2132P?
May 14, 2014, 08:40:46 AM
Hey all, I picked up the Sunking project I've had on the shelf and got to thinking about changing the TL072s. Has anybody gone this route?
I've had generally great experiences with Burr Brown chips and wonder if one can improve on the Klon?

Thanks

Hi all, I finally got my Nautilus allwired up but it's not working right. I first had the footswitch done wrong but I figured it out. Now everything seems to except for one thing: the "wah" doesn't really trigger and the overall volume is way too high. I can hear the filters and all 3 switches are working but I only get the "w" sound, not "waaww" if you know what I'm saying. Any idea what should do?
Thanks!

Open Discussion / Pepper Spray?
March 25, 2014, 08:02:56 AM
Hey guys,

I was gasing for a Harmonic Percolator for years but never acted on it. Then I saw the recently released Catalinbread Karma Suture and it just awoke something in me. I'd buy one, but not for $170.

I have to build one myself but clearly the Madbean PCB is no longer available. It looks like a simple enough circuit and I can do point to point using perfboard and I even see some vero board layouts. I got the 2011 instructions but I have 2 things on my mind:

1) How close is the Pepper Spray to the original (or the Albini version which people seem to like better)?
2) How did CBread get the 2 extra controls?

General Questions / DIY Pedal Power
August 23, 2013, 06:13:58 AM
Hey guys, this is a true DIY community, so I figured to ask what has been on my mind for years now:

Is there a DIY project or kit out there for pedal power?

I really don't want to drop ~$200 for my power needs but I want to stop using One Spot + daisy chain because I know it's not ideal. Furthermore, I need 9, 12 and 18 Volts for my pedals and even Voodoo Labs won't cut it (mainly because of the mA required for my Kingsley).

Since these fancy conditioned & isolated pedalboards are no more complicated than the pedals we build, it must be possible to roll your own using Mouser/Digieky etc?

Anyway, respond if you know!
Thanks

Hey guys I know it's possible but I'm not sure what switch to buy:

I'd like to get rid of the 3P4T switch in favor of a mini toggle to save space.
Do I get a 3-position On-On-On SPDT?

General Questions / Going for a Nautilus
July 30, 2013, 11:30:57 AM
Hi friends, I'm pretty new here, even if I lurk from time to time.

I have decided that I need an envelope filter and from doing my homework, I love the sound of a Mutron more than anything else out there. Of course I'm broke/cheap so I prefer to roll my own instead of spending $200 so I ordered the Nautilus PCB from Madbean.

Long story longer, I'd love to hear your tips for this build. Are there more "authentic" options out there? Pitfalls? (I managed to score a NOS 150k linear pot for the Peak) Would there be any advantage to using carbon comp resistors?

I will continue to research up in here but thought another thread on the Nautilus wouldn't bother anyone.

Thanks!

General Questions / Part #'s for Sun King
June 06, 2011, 07:37:59 PM
I wanted to know if anybody has a list of part numbers (Mouser or Digikey for example) for the Sun King? I want to get the right parts and as close as possible to the Klon. Thanks if you can help!
