General Questions / yamaha FX500 60hz hum
April 14, 2023, 04:27:59 PM
Found a yamaha FX500 for cheap, but has a significant 60hz hum and may need new filter caps in the power section. Can anyone help me identify which are the filter caps? I am not a schematic wizard.

General Questions / Stew-Mac Sun Fuzz good npn trannies?
December 26, 2022, 09:14:07 AM
Dad got me a kit for x-mas, anyone ever tried one of these yet? They did a good job making it super simple. It comes with BC108's but does anyone recommend something better in the npn silicon variety?

Open Discussion / "boutique" builder using MBP boards
December 21, 2021, 10:28:54 AM
Someone in the Tone Mob facebook group was bummed he opened a "boutique" flanger pedal and found an MPB board in it. I believe (based on his pics) it was a current lover board. Is this still a problem? From his complaint this was not a "one off" or "selling this pedal I made"  and for his credit the seller did have some self etched boards in his other pedals. I suggested he complain here as, correct me if I'm wrong, this isn't kosher. Obviously you can't police this kind of thing but what a bummer. I'd have been bummed.  >:(

More alesis MIDIVERB II woes as I think the output pot is dying. As I unfortunately found out on my first attempt replacing/resoldering the pots (I still have replacements) is crappy business. Or I don't have the proper tools to get the parts off cleanly. I wish I could just send the daughter board with the replacement pots have someone with a professional set up replace them. building pedals/rewiring guitars is in my realm, but repairing old electronics is not. Doesn't anyone own 1-800-solder4U?

 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( Trying to replace the pots on an old midiverb II rackmount. Finally found replacement pots. Waited on backorder. Show shipping via USPS and their problems. Tried to remove old pots, barely got them removed, lot a pad, gave up. Ordered non working midiverb (pots and pot daughter board seem ok) going to try to assemble a working unit. How do these old computer restorers on youtube do it? Trying to remove through parts on a 20+ year old wave soldered board is damn near impossible. it's like you need a small iron on both ends of the board. And that's with copious flux. And fresh solder. Should I never be attempted to do something this aggravating in the future, any tips?

Tim, builds as Master Effects out of canada, it sounds great. (And he had just happened to have built one when I asked about it) But looking up the circuit online it's the same guy on a forum post.. has no one else done this before? I'd have thought it was more common. Unless people aren't into the 80's rack saturation thing. Anyone else tackle this before? I've been trying to find a high gain pedal in the pre-amp or hot rodded marshall territory to use in my dinky live rig. (blues Jr. if you believe it!) Can't afford the real thing (nor the volume). Anyone else after this goal?

Is it kosher to discuss recent events of Mike Fuller and Fulltone and it's cancellation from Guitar Center?

Open Discussion / NPD: Boss dd-7 not happy :(
August 15, 2019, 04:08:59 PM
So for the longest time I had a boss dd-5. Was my delay for years. Traded it for an original ce-2 a while back and replaced it with an EH deluxe memory boy. Decided I miss the digital delay too much, so off to reverb I go a-lookin'. No dd-5s, but they have a dd-7 and included home brew tempo box for $100. Sold. So I get it yesterday and it clips. Any remotely hot signal and it clips. Is this the internal buffer being overloaded? It clips in bypass as well. Doesn't play nice with my LP and I'm wondering how it's gonna do on my pedalboard with an overdrive through it. I don't recall the dd-5 ever clipping, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway it ticks me off royally. Right now I'm running the output of a PODxt through it as I had with the dd-5 for years. Little mention of this issue besides a random TGP thread. I hate to have wasted 100 bucks on a pedal I now can't use. I can't imagine there being any mods for these as everything is surface mount.

Open Discussion / blues jr owners?
February 07, 2019, 04:05:47 PM
Any blues jr owners here? If so what version and what mods? I have a new (to me) version III in limited edition amethyst (purple) and I would like to pimp it a little visually But you can't really do much. Has anyone else done anything crazy with one?

Open Discussion / Blah. Mammoth dropped the ball.
January 03, 2019, 02:17:11 PM
Dad got me a mammoth deviator fuzz kit for x-mas. Showed up late as he thought he had placed the order but didn't. Seemed like a nice kit, fancy powder coated and silkscreened enclosure (I didn't feel like working up my own). However the kit was missing some resistors. Had them on hand so no biggie, but still sucks they were missing. Anyway, it's together but not working. I e-mail mammoth support. Missing resistors, why no sockets for the IC's.. well the IC's were supposed to have sockets. apparently whoever is picking their kits is "new". Waiting to hear back from them about the IC issue, I'm hoping I didn't fry them soldering them directly onto the board. My dad is miffed and wondering if he should get his money back. Yea.. mammoth you've done me great in the past, no probs at all, this time you dropped the ball. WAAAAH-WAHHH

BTW not trying to bash the company, they've done me no wrong in the past, just venting. I feel bad they boffed this kit up, and whatever other kits they are sending out.

Can't vent it on facebook for soon will be obvious reasons. My parents go to a local methodist church. The church has an annual Christmas "seasons of giving" party. Its a non denominational party, but being a christian church tends to exclude Jewish families due to it's christmas nature. We have a now regular female member is nearly allergic to air. Very bad case. She is extremely cautious in public. During the party we had her grandson dropped off. Who is also allergic to living (no offense meant, its a horrible condition I have empathy), Kids eats a peanut cookie, has SEVERE reaction. We had NO IDEA the kid was coming. NOW the pastor in all her wisdom is placing a ban on all food in church until further notice. After church social tome, public dinners, potlucks, parties. NOTHING until we can "ensure" the church is allergen free... MY BRAAAAAIN. If you are allergic to most of life or know someone who is, an unverified public party is NOT a safe place to be.

General Questions / transistors for weener build
November 08, 2018, 02:43:03 PM
decide to populate the weener board in the stock clyde form for future use with the whipple inductor. The BOM cals for bc108's. Are gains of the actual transistors all that important in this build? I have the 70's crybaby board with whatever transistors are on it, could I re-use those? I found the sound of the 70's TDK craybaby to be somewhat lame, hence the start of this entire wah mission. Would the old transistors be a possible cause of why the crybaby sounded so lackluster? The geofx "technology of the wah" article suggests the transistors aren't a major factor in the sound

General Questions / colorsound wah values?
November 02, 2018, 02:23:32 PM
I want to build a colorsound wah with my weener board. I have a TDK and a whipple inductor and either a hot potz I, a hotpotz II or a whipple ICAR taper pot. would any of those get me the right sweep? Anyone have values for resistors and caps?

Ordered one but I'm wondering what kind of fit it will be.

Open Discussion / Gigging members, opinion wanted
July 24, 2018, 11:34:37 AM
We're playing the bar half of a brewpub last saturday night, it's after kitchen closing so no one seated in the dining area. We're not terribly loud, but we get complaints from someone at the end of the bar that "we can't hear ourselves talk!" Now like I said due to a huge noise issue with an out of line boutique owner next door (another tale for another time) who attempted to have the town (city technically) shutter the brewpub, we were not playing at excessive volumes, and constantly asking the bartender "we still good?" every song break. Do we A) placate patrons and put down the rock n' roll to dinner jazz volumes, or do we B) continue as why would a person come to a bar with a band playing on a saturday night if they didn't want the music.

Why are your guys thoughts.. both me and the bartender considered it kind of unreasonable

Open Discussion / pickup conundrum.
February 13, 2018, 04:19:06 PM
Long story short, 2018 les paul tribute goldtop body off stratosphere. Added black plastics, grover keystones and 50's wiring. Put some zebra open coil GFS fat pats in it I had previously in another guitar. Now on to the point. The neck pickup has slugs and polepiece screws. The bridge only has slugs. After receiving them from gfs a few years ago now I e-mailed them to say "hey my bridge pickup doesn't have adjustable screws" and their reply was it's an older model, functions the same, we can take it back and give you one with screws like the photo. I said "nah if it's functionally the same I'll leave it" but not having the screws has always.. bothered me, like it makes the pickup look cheap. It sounds great. Now I could if I was really hell bent, buy the screws and block piece and carefully add them in, but that risks damaging the pickup trying to remove the slugs. Now I could buy a new bridge pickup from gfs and make sure they have the screws since they weren't a matched set (what makes a set "matched" anyways?) or am I just being an anal corksniffer about it and should be like "fuck it sounds great this guitar's gonna get beat up anyways" What would you people do?

Open Discussion / Built a BSIAB2.. but...
December 27, 2017, 12:03:16 PM
SO I built a BSIAB2, but anything past halfway on both the drive and volumes puts into unusable territory. I've only tried it with a strat, but fully cranked it just sounds shrill and harsh. Is this normal for this pedal? also do I set the internal trim by ear? I used the GGG kit with optional contour knob mod
