Open Discussion / Solder
December 16, 2019, 04:41:52 PM
I got a spool of Worthington 97/3 Rosin Core solder and have been using it for a long time.  I've always had problems getting solder to stick.  I just assumed my technique was bad.  (to be fair, it probably kind of is)  I recently built a project from a kit that came with a small roll of solder and it worked beautifully.  I've never had a board look so good.  My question is, what kind of solder do you guys use?  Also, is there a reason the stuff I was using before refuses to cooperate so often?

Open Discussion / PCBs
November 10, 2019, 04:27:41 AM
I think that Madbean has the best quality PCBs out there.  I'm curious: What program do you use to design your cicuits and who does Madbean  get to make the PCBs.
I'm an amateur who is just now trying to figure out Eagle, but I'd like to get one of my simple circuits on a legit PCB instead of my usual perf board.  Any advice is welcome.

I was a fan of Mammoth Electronics' selection of enclosures.  They had more color options of powder coated boxes than any other resource I've used.  Does anyone know of another place that offers a selection other than black or white?

Open Discussion / Footswitch PCB
October 31, 2019, 07:15:42 PM
I've gotten some of the footswitch PCBs from the fine folks here at Madbean Pedals and they really make things easier.  I'm curious, though, as to why the footswitch PCB isn't built into the pedal circuit PCB to begin with.  As I type this, I am thinking it has to do with different dimensions of footswitches and pots and may have answered my own question.  I still welcome responses from folks more knowledgeable than I am.

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Graphics
October 10, 2019, 03:29:23 PM
When it comes time to adding the finishing touches to my enclosure, it typically involves spray paint and stickers.  I see some of you guys have some very professional looking enclosures with nice graphics and shiny epoxy stuff going on. I'm ready to upgrade the looks of my boxes so I can show them off without having to give the disclaimer of "I know it's ugly, but wait 'till you hear it". What are some of your techniques and where can I go to learn to master the magic that you guys are using?

General Questions / Cap substitution
May 17, 2019, 07:38:14 PM
The muddbunny civil war calls for 430p caps.  The suppliers I use don't carry that.  Can I substitute that with another value without compromising the circuit?
The only resource that I know has them is mouser, but they have so many options I always end up getting weird sized caps because I don't know all the details to match what I'd get from mammoth or small bear.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

General Questions / Schematic Symbols
May 07, 2019, 12:04:21 PM
I noticed on some schematics there is an arrow (similar to the "IN"/"OUT" symbol) with an "L" in it, and there are some that are a circle with either the word "PIN" in it or the circle has an "X" in it.  I'm not sure what that means.  Anyone have any insight?
Thanks.

Open Discussion / 1w amp schematic

I am going to try this little amp out. I don't see a volume pot. As a beginner, I'm not sure where it should go. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

General Questions / Bourns Pots
July 02, 2018, 06:00:52 PM
I need to get a 25k and 100k Bourns 3362P for the tonebender project. Mammoth seems to only carry 3386P, and don't have a 25k. Any suggestions on alternate sources or interchangeable parts?

General Questions / Ground Noise
March 03, 2017, 02:11:25 AM
My Pig Butt came out pretty good and sounds awesome. I've been jamming on it for several days. Today, however, I'm getting a loud high pitched ground noise type of sound when engaged. Everything looks fine as far as I can see. I haven't dropped it or anything like that. I'm not experienced enough to know how to troubleshoot. Any ideas?

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Solder
February 28, 2017, 01:32:48 PM
What type of solder do you guys use? I have some 40/60 66core .093 dia. I got for free. It works good, but seems way to big. I tried a smaller size, but it doesn't seem to work as well. I don't know the details on the smaller type. It was just a rolled up piece with no packaging.

Build Reports / Finally finishing a project
February 27, 2017, 09:40:34 PM
A year ago I built my first fuzz box (aka Fot Box. Picture below with the rat's nest innards). Between work, having babies, work, moving, The Great Louisiana Flood of 2016, moving again, work, etc., I've finally managed to start a second project. (Picture below with the more organized innards. Technically, it's my third project. The second project was a dud. Hashtag learning experiences.) I should have it boxed up tonight and ready for a test drive.

General Questions / Pig Butt Switch
February 02, 2017, 01:28:28 PM
I ordered a DPDT PCB mount switch for the Pig Butt project, but it's too big. I see a mini DPDT switch on the Mammoth website. Is that what I should have gotten?

Open Discussion / Homemade guitars
November 11, 2016, 09:08:59 PM
A co worker is looking to start an outside-the-box woodworking project (pardon the pun). Since he enjoys woodworking, and I've been toying with pedals, he thought we should join forces and build a guitar. Anyone here have any experience with such a project? Madbean has been super helpful in my pedal projects, so I'm wondering if there are any sites as helpful as this for that type of project.
Thanks.

General Questions / Heat and humidity
November 04, 2016, 12:02:11 PM
I do my work and store all of my things in a toolshed that is only air conditioned while I'm in there. Being that I'm in the gulf south, it gets pretty hot and humid in there. Should I be concerned of damaging any of the components I have stock piled in there?

No questions or queries. Just sharing a pretty day with you fine folks.
Kids, dogs, and pedals.
Working on my second ever build, first on a PCB jammin' The Muggs.
Happy Good Friday, y'all!

50V 0.0047uf capacitor.
I notice it looks quite different than what I'm used to seeing. Will it work, or is the appearance of it an indicator of something I should be concerned about?

General Questions / Geek

Anyone use the Geek app for parts?
I just bought a 100 pack of 2n2222's for $1. Or I just got ripped off. I'm not sure yet.

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Big caps.
March 05, 2016, 01:57:36 PM
I ordered some film capacitors from mouser. Some are really big. I'm assuming they'll work since the values are the same as far as I can tell, although they won't fit on the PCB I got from the fine folks at Madbean. The question is, how do I avoid such an issue in the future? I didn't notice anything while ordering that mentioned size.
Also, does color signify anything? Some were yellow. And one looked like a miniature soda can.
I think I'll stick to Mammoth and Small Bear for now...
