Tech Help - Projects Page / Maestro MP-1 Phaser
September 30, 2012, 10:28:42 AM
So I have a 1st draft stage fright board and scheme that the Beaner let me solder, but I have only got it to faintly phase (the balls works though). It's in that stage where I need to take a break before I throw it out the window because you've gone over everything with a fine tooth comb to no avail (need voltages but bean was going through hell at the time I was puttering :( )

Anyway the Maestro is a dream pedal of mine and I'd reached the point that my time might equal the cost of buying an original. And I couldn't wait any longer and splurged. Got it for about $150 with shipping. Sounds AMAZING! Looks awesome on the inside too :) I can now take original voltages, though I don't think they will help with the bean board. (some diff parts).

The MP1 does not have LEDs for lighting up the wheel knobs like the Stage phaser, though there are holes drilled for LEDs. I am going to switch out the vintage dpdt to true bypass (I don't care about resale value) and am considering adding the two LEDs. Adding two LEDs won't sag the voltage, right? (just need someone's confirmation to make me feel better about doing this to a gorgeous pedal )

Tech Help - Projects Page / Cherry Bomb Gain
September 26, 2012, 08:55:10 PM
I never use this thing because all the gain is bunched up in a very small window at the end of the pot. Has anyone had any luck with a different pot value or other mods?

Open Discussion / Cabling these puppies
January 26, 2012, 06:42:10 AM
So as I build more...and more...and more pedals, I gotta keep buying little cables to connect em up (at this point to have essentially two different pedalboards).

Being that I don't think I can stop building pedals, i was thinking that it might be fun to make my own cables. Looking at supplies though it doesn't seem like I will save much money. 1/4" jacks are expensive.

Anyone make their own cables? Do you know where to find a deal on bulk instrument cable and jacks to make your own?

Open Discussion / Top Albums of 2011
November 12, 2011, 10:11:28 AM
OK so as the year comes to a close, what were your favorite albums of the year? (sure there's a little more time for albums like the Black Keys that haven't dropped, but you can always add anything awesome that drops the last month and a half.) Here's mine:

Portugal. The Man - In the Mountain in the Cloud (you can select all the songs in the youtube)

Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest

TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light

Eddie Roberts and THe Fire Eaters - Burn!

Feist - Metals

Theophilus London -  TImez are Weird these Days (usually not big on hip hop, but this album is fantastic!)

Mastodon - The Hunter

Charles Bradley - No Time for Dreaming

Galactic - the Other side of Midnight (best Live)

Open Discussion / Pedal Friendly Bands
July 10, 2011, 08:55:16 AM
Post some bands you think we should check out, bands that use their pedalboards to great effect.
I thought it would be cool to start a thread where we could share lesser known bands that make great use of pedals in their sound. The operative words: Lesser known, I'm hoping we don't have to read 15 posts citing David Gilmour's setup over and over again.
To get you started I offer you Oceansize, who unfortunately broke up a few months ago.

I found this link where the band members  discuss their pedal boards and was happy to see a a couple DIY pedals (muffs).

Open Discussion / Cool old MXR stock on ebay
June 30, 2011, 07:44:58 PM
Spoke a bunch with this guy, he has a bunch of stock from MXR that came from what MXR had in house when they were bought out by Dunlop. He has MN3005s, MN3205s, old MXR PCBs, old MXR rotary switches, etc for sale. Had some SAD1024's that I missed out on. Early on someone bought some SAD1024s that were defective (dead) and he started testing chips before posting on ebay (not sure how, probably with a pedal).  I missed the first batch of MN3005s (someone bought 49 of 50) and he wouldn't post more on ebay until they were tested. Made me wait a week. I bought 4 MN3005s (when there was still free shipping). The ones I got are legit and sound excellent in my Aquaboy.

I just bought a vintage Ross phaser for 35 bucks! (from a guy in an MTV pop band)

Need advice on adding true bypass to it. It's a DPDT switch. If I accurately ID the in,out, power and ground wires is there any reason I couldn't stick in a 3pdt with the madbean wiring?

Please share general knowledge,  secrets and potential problems commonly encountered when adding true bypass to vintage effects.

I can dream can't I?

Bought one of aziltz semi populated boards. Plan to do a MN3005 build. I'd like to order everything I need including for the add ons boards.

Unfortunately the linked thread on FSB does not list the BOM anywhere except in a couple vero layouts on the last page. http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8376&start=240
Are the compnents listed on both accurate? The double delay vero is for a v3205. Is there anything different needed for MN3005 board, besides the jumpers?

Can anyone confirm the Bill of Materials for the add on boards or provide 'em?

Thx!

If the name appeared to have more than one vote in the thread I moved them up in the list, all others are just consecutive order. Poll will run for 5 days. Everybody gets 2 votes, so start naming.

Not sure if there will be a reward for the winner other than satisfaction, which is pretty cool.

I'm building a Mu-tron III clone and just received an original dual optocoupler. I assume the cathode is the fat wire on the side with the white stripe but to be safe I tested for polarity.   I'm getting no reading either way testing the two wire side, so now I'm thinking I may have a dead part. Not real familiar with optocouplers, would I have to test the bottom leads in some conjunction with the top wires to confirm its kaput? What's the right way to test it?  Any help is appreciated.

This is a thread where you can post the left-field,off-the wall, NON-OD/flange/chorus/delay/fuzz pedals. Please post wacky out of this world pedals and discuss them too.

Requests / 9V MN3007 Electric Mistress
April 20, 2011, 09:34:51 PM
folks at diystompboxes recently figured out a layout that replaces the sad1024 with the more common MN3007, also a 1024 stage chip, in an old EM project.  Fruits of their labor:
http://members.cox.net/cosmicgoof/Mistress%20MN3007%20English.pdf

Verified and supposed to sounds great. I think Brian might be able to tweak it a bit to sell 'em, I'm pretty sure there would be a market for an EM clone project.
