Hey all,
I'm trying to troubleshoot an old Fatpants V2 build...it's making some weird noises and my first guess is that it's something power or jfet related. thought maybe the jfet pinout was off but my J201 is positioned like how the board shows it. Maybe the charge pump?
measuring voltages...for one it doesn't seem like I'm getting the 17v past D3. Will look for other posted voltages...
thanks for any help!
It does respond to volume and body controls

Odd sounds I'm getting:

curious if you could change cap values on a switch to give similar performance to a Jangle Box compressor (ross with cap switch iirc)

I couldn't find the latest build doc for the Sharkfin (aka Maestro FSH-1). After some digging, I found this--is it the latest? https://web.archive.org/web/20180712194845/http://www.madbeanpedals.com/projects/Sharkfin/Sharkfin_2015.pdf

this is the pcb https://ibb.co/DQKN5DK
I'm trying to eliminate what sounds like some power whine (could be the charge pump?) and then swap a transistor to move the LFO up in pitch into a more musical range (looks like 2n5088 in Q4 should do the trick for that). Any help would be appreciated  :)

Here's what it presently sounds like (I did noise reduction in post, but it is noticeably there when effect's engaged)

saw this on reddit and thought you guys might enjoy

I'm thinking about chasing a similar thing with the Sega Genesis...

Open Discussion / What are you playing? (games)
April 22, 2016, 07:48:12 PM
Took a long break from music, hopeful about a possible new job and new city...

Relapsed into playing video games some, wondering what you all like. My recs:

Duck Game (pc, soon ps4 and xbox). Multiplayer hysteria, sometimes arbitrary. Patiently waiting for an update this year. Great retro music.

Rocket League. Soccer with rocket cars. Addicting, frustrating, fun

Insurgency. realistic fps, couple hits and youre done. Tensest game ever, great sound design.

Surprised this hadn't been talked about yet. I was shocked to find out, a real blow to the world of guitar electronics

It's weird, I tried finding data sheets but germ transistors are like the forgotten middle child of electronics. For a possible mic preamp project I was wondering what the max voltage these could handle:

MN16B, GT108B, some AC187

Also thought up what if these were Darlington pairs for more gain? Or in another scenario, what of you used fet's arranged as in Catalinbread's tube designs or Jack Orman's booster...don't think that's been done much.

Also I ran an sm57 into my Meathead or mkii Tonebender and into my console's hi z input...sounds better than I expected, in a lofi way.

Hey, has anybody tried building studio gear or using pedals on tracks? My 5 knob Engineer's thumb seems to work pretty well on drums...might try optical designs. I bet the Earthquaker Warden compressor would be good...

I've been eyeing the FETBoy preamp over at groupdiy, but the transformers/power supply has made me put it off. Somebody adapted the Redd 47 preamp into an fet design, looks really cool...

Open Discussion / Attack of the mini amps
October 11, 2014, 09:47:19 AM
I don't really need a new amp but I've been thinking a lot about something small, portable, 1-5 watt or so, good Fender/Vox cleans and nice dirty, curious on your thoughts.

Open Discussion / NPD Zvex Instant Lo Fi

I've been a fan of Zvex stuff for a while...my first exposure to boutique stuff. Now I finally own one--got an alright deal on this. The guy who does Chase Bliss Audio's Warped Vinyl designed this too--seems like a cool dude. Pretty psyched to play with it in a few days

It's old technology but I recorded some impulse responses of my Ampeg Gemini II's reverb. Small Ampeg combos were used a lot in studios on the East Coast before it was cost effective for Fender to ship from California...their sound is on spy movie soundtracks, surf music, and more recently early Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, Daptone/Dap-kings. The demo below was recorded with an amp that didn't have reverb--convolution doesn't completely catch the sound of springs but it's close. IR's: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bwbt04yLS493N0xFU19TQzk0SWs/edit?usp=sharing

I'm also thinking about recording IR's directly from the reverb pot (pre output tubes/speaker) for use with the Logidy Epsi...

The signal chain was 10s sine sweep->Ampeg Gemini II with varying levels of reverb->P12RJ speaker in a 4x12 cab->SM57

Open Discussion / Spring reverb revisited
June 14, 2014, 02:40:18 AM
I've been playing with the idea of doing a spring reverb project for a while and ended up gathering a bunch of info but haven't really committed to anything. I told myself I may as well end up buying a commercial project to save the hassle and get something I already like the sound of...
I like the Fender/Ampeg reverb a lot in funk, soul, Meters, Daptone, Hendrix contexts
Anyway here's my options (throw in your own opinions/experiences if you want)

Little Lanilei (handrawn schem on fsb)
Vanamps Reverbamate
DIY Reverb module (line level? sounds good) http://www.dogenigt.com/2013/08/spring-reverb-module.html
Hardwire RV7
Strymon Flint
Catalinbread Topanga
http://sound.westhost.com/articles/reverb.htm
Some hybrid of solid state diy options: tone control(s), mix would be nice
Tube outboard unit based on Fender/Ampeg designs--$$$  :o

Found this while looking for the Boss CS-3 schem...looks good according to the specs and I think Kempf is the Russian behind AMT electronics?

Open Discussion / Compressor tech info
April 19, 2014, 09:58:55 PM
Hey guys, after building an Engineer's Thumb, Orange Squeezer, and planning more I've been getting more interested in compressors. Being a recording engineer, I'm already really into them!

Compressor fanatics like Jon and ovnilab may be interested in this
So I've decided to compile a list of specs for well known circuits: attack time, release time, ratio (if calculable), threshold, freq response, noise at unity gain, input/output impedance, etc
Work in progress: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KDYdyKn-rG-0-RljN8W3Ug4FL56FLGDuN-30dHAZaPU/edit?usp=sharing

A compressor is a "dynamics" effect. It is a super-fast, sometimes subtle volume control that actually reduces the dynamic range of what is fed into it. By changing controls, you can change how exaggerated the attack of a note is and create a certain feeling of "evenness/thickness" that is great for country, funk, and really any genre.

BTW, for the less tech inclined, here's a guide to compressor parameters on electric guitar:
Attack: short = reduced note attack, duller. long = attack is exaggerated, sharper
*attack is actually how soon after a note starts that a note is attenuated.
Release: short = compression effect is exaggerated, "thicker". long= thinner, spiky sound
*release is actually how soon a compressor "lets go" and stops attenuating a note
Threshold: low = a lot of compression, very noticeable. high = only peaks are compressed, more transparent

Ben Harmless on tdpri:
QuoteFirst point: absolutely critical to the sound of a compressor on any given source is the attack time setting. This is doubly true on any source where the primary frequencies are low - such as bass. Remember that a key low-end frequency like 80hz is a vibration that occurs 80 times a second, meaning that you have a cycle, peak-to-peak, once every .0125 seconds. If you've set your compressor's attack time at anything faster than 12.5ms, (so that you can kill quick transients, for instance) and your threshold too low (an easy thing to do) you've just attacked the low end of your tone before it could develop. You lose low-end clarity and punch this way. I suspect many stompboxes are guilty of this. This factor is also why multiband compression is such a hot tool in music mastering.

Second point: Compressors are always most transparent when used lightly - even if you use more than one. If you've got a dual mono compressor like the DBX 166, run the second channel after the first, and ease up on the ratio settings for both channels. This will result in a gentler compressor effect, and you can often achieve a little more evenness before your tone becomes audibly squashed.

Build Reports / 5e3 amp build
July 21, 2013, 01:21:50 PM
Hey guys, been away from the forum for a while...
But I built this amp!!
Used the Tubedepot pcb, sourced my own parts (mostly through them). 40 watt tremolux OT and 6L6s(one of my heroes used one...turns out it was for running 2 4x12s!!). It's supposedly ~25W.  Mmk I'm gonna go back to playing it now.

I should be able to get this but my brain's hurting...

when all controls on max:
Ic 1 voltages= 8.97, 353mv?, 0.92, 0, 4.24, 1.0mv, 1.1mv, 8.97

Ic 2: 1.4, 1.1, 0.9, 0, 0, 7.45, 8.05, 8.97

Ic3: 1.0mv, 0.63, 7.94, 0.9mv, 32mv, 0, 0, unstable, unstable, unstable, 8.98, 32mv, unstable, unstable, 0.5, unstable

Using this layout

Open Discussion / Australia?
May 21, 2013, 10:01:35 AM
Hey guys, been a while since I've posted around here...been pretty swamped after graduating college and interning/working. Anyways, after a weird incident I suddenly got inspired to look into moving away from my small town in NC and over to Australia! I've never actually been there but an old veteran told me it was the one place he'd rather live than the US. I know there's at least a small group of members who live there...So Aussies, what do you think of your country? People who've been there?

My major was in recording/production. I love it and feel like I got a great education; Anybody have friends in recording studios/theaters/auditoriums or electronics in the area? Am I crazy?
