Fuzz Duo is different now where there are only 3 transistors.
Switch toggles between Si/Ge for Q1 and there is the added tone controls
Here is a pic. Thought I would share. :)

Build Reports / VFE Tractor Beam (1st VFE build)
April 29, 2019, 06:43:47 AM
I finally got around to making another pedal and decided on the Tractor Beam.
Pedal worked the 1st time with no issues.  My only question is that trimmer for the jfet, I found that if the trimmer is set almost all the way ccw I get the most phasing.
Pedal does sound great though and I will have to mess with the settings some more! lots of sounds from this one :-)

VFE Projects / Mini Mu for sale on VFE site!
April 10, 2019, 05:59:30 PM
I ordered a Mini Mu from the VFE website and have a couple of questions.
Is it a spilt rail project? also those caps that are marked pwr I assume are 100nf caps?
Not much info on this pedal other then  "built exactly as shown on board, but may take tweaking/modding to dial in just right"  couple of Diodes on the board looks like maybe  1N4001?
Need a schematic for that one I guess,  anyone have any info for this pedal let me know!

I just found this beast in a music store for $600!
SCORE!!!   2x12 old lonestar classic... and I must say it really is a massive fender twin on steroids and then some!
gonna re tube it with a quad of 6v6's to get it at a lower club vol. as is I cannot turn it up past 3 and really you have to crank it up to find the sweet spot. LOL

Pricey but if you have shaky hands or improper tools... these will work!

VFE Projects / Hammond 1590B2 for VFE pedals. . .
May 03, 2017, 07:45:53 PM
Can you use just a standard 1590B inclosure for these builds or the newer 1590B2's that are a pinch taller?

Build Reports / Octavias !
April 03, 2015, 03:14:20 PM
Here is one of my strip board builds of an Tycobrahe Octavia clone.
For the longest time it was just an plain off white enclosure but, I purchased a P-Touch label-er and wholla...
I am still not good at getting perfect labels to line up but oh well!
I may end up adding a pre-gain 9mm pot to this one in place of the input pulldown resistor (50KB), I read that helps out with the upper octave. Sounds great still but this thing is pretty over the top!
some eye candy!  8)

... Lurking in the background is a scarab deluxe clone... I won't get into that one... needs silver knobbies  ::)

Cheers!

Build Reports / Harbinger One *revisited*
September 21, 2014, 03:36:56 PM
Big wow!
I finally had a chance to use this at a gig on a big stage with a primo PA setup...
Was basically running  a setup   Guitar > wah > harbinger one > fuzz > overdrives > modulation effects > mesa boogie

OMG...   Harbinger nails any good uni-vibe I have ever heard in spades! Spot on to anything I have heard Jimi using from the late 60s - maybe I got lucky with my LDRs?  hahaha
Thank you again MADBEAN!
my build is here http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=16907.msg160529#msg160529

Build Reports / Harbinger One success!
August 08, 2014, 10:28:48 AM
Wow!... So here it is, finally!
Lets set the wayback machine past 24 months or so... I first heard of the do it yourself pedal community and was intrigued at the thought of being able to make an effect pedal myself... the one I always wanted to make was a uni-vibe but, for me that was something I thought I could never be able to do because of the complexity of the build and me being a total noob that could not solder to save my life! So to kick start everything I purchased my 1st madbean PCB.. It was the Thunderpuss! And from there I continued on to other projects more complex then the next...   ANYWHO fast forward and FINALLY...  my Uni-Vibe -

Many thanks to Madbean for all the great projects and thank you so much for the HARBINGER ONE -
This pedal sounds great... I can still maybe tweak the LDRs/Lamp orientation and all that fun stuff but... it more or less nails Jimi / Trower stuff in spades, however I am still picky on that exact warble that I hear from the Band of Gypsies stuff...   ::)  anywho...  I am rambling and here are some pics!

(I did my trademark move here melting the corner of that top left 1uF cap since I am all thumbs trying to solder the intensity lugs LOL  ;))

Yeah not sure the exact advantage of laying the LDRs flat or pointing them directly to the lamp... Was reading on GEO that pointing them at the lamp gives a more pronounced warble so I tried it. Shield is just flat black inside and if I ever find a proper shield that I can line with foil... I may try LDRs mounted flat...   8)

CHEERS!

Hey all, just finished a harbinger one build...  rocking it before I boxed it and the speed is not doing anything.
Without the light shield I can see that the lamp is on so that is good... I can turn the brightness up or down with the trimmers and with the lamp dimmed down,
if I use the light in the room and move the light shield up and down I can hear it doing the vibe thing... not sure where to begin to trouble shoot but any pointers would be great!  Can post pics. Also can do voltage readings if I know what to look for... Thanks!

Open Discussion / Tayda potentiometers?
May 22, 2014, 11:52:24 AM
Is it me or does anyone notice that the Tayda pots get scratchy fast? I have ordered pots from Tayda and am not really liking them as much as the ones I get from Sm Bear or Mouser... :-\   Maybe I got a bad batch from Tayda

General Questions / Harbinger Photocells?
May 01, 2014, 10:08:13 AM
 Hey all,
I saw somewhere that sm bear does not carry the proper photocells, this was posted:
-Bad News/Good News first: For the moment, I can't supply for the Univibe the very high-dark resistance photocells that Silonex used to make. The parts that they are currently making in China will work in a trem but not in a phaser. I have marked down my remaining stock, so you can get some very good parts at a price you would not usually see. I will do my best in coming months to secure a re-make of the Univibe-friendly photocells -

So are there any other places I can source those photocells?  Not sure I would trust ebay or Tayda for those!

thanks

Here is one I made for myself but I may get rid of it because I am done with putting decals over bare metal with flaws  :-[
but I suppose all that really counts is that it works flawless and is clean inside!   ;D
waiting for the sunking II boards!

I put the overdrive on a carling stomp switch since I like to be able to swap modes without reaching down and flip a toggel...

and some eyecandy!:

and the guts

Thanks all!

January 29, 2014, 05:17:08 PM
Yeah been busy, took a stab at another vero build, this time of a pink flesh, made it for myself and I must say, this one is staying glued to my pedal board!  Has that sound we all know from Mr. Gilmour in spades!

And of course the guts!

I have a thing for vero.... Very easy

Build Reports / Kingslayer trio!
January 29, 2014, 02:30:52 PM
Just before the holidays I purchased 3 Kingslayer boards, and had one I made for myself....
I gave this one away as a donation to my buds in FDJ in Jackson TN:
This one I traded for a pedal train board to my guitar player in my band:
The finished product: and mine is the one to the right with the sharpie writing LOL
I have one more board left that I will make later.
The Kingslayer that is in the big enclosure has another foot switch to turn on the overdrive because my guitar player did not want it on a toggle.... I wish my 'slayer was like that hahahhah, very consistent pedal, I tried all three and I cannot hear any differences between them.

Cheers!

Build Reports / ZPDLX build...!
January 27, 2014, 04:05:46 PM
Hey all, here is my zero point DLX build I did a while back and I decided to put the official Madbean decal on there after the fact... This pedal is great and is permanent on my board!
And complete on my board

No need to see guts... Crammed in the box and looks like sim city in there.

Next up for me is harbinger univibe

Build Reports / A gift for a King(slayer)
December 18, 2013, 11:39:51 AM
 Hey all,
Here is one of my Kingslayers that I made for a fellow guitarist in Tenn in a band called FullDevilJacket as a donation/gift
This is the 1st time I have ever used waterslides since usually I just draw on a pedal with a sharpie and it came out pretty good...
I still need to figure out what the best top coat to use as a gloss...  Pedal rocks and Thank you Madbean for all you do!!!
some eyecandy for yall!!!

I suppose I could have done a better job with the LEDs inside however it is packed tight inside with foam and rock solid and stable...  LOL

Cheers

Build Reports / tube screamer on vero
August 22, 2013, 02:09:48 PM
 Hey all!
I just finished this one a couple days back and is based off of an Over Drive Pro 820.
I really love how this one sounds too. It is a very transparent tubescreamer and is great for blues and rock if you're into pushing an amp into overdrive.
It is also the biggest thing I have ever attempted on vero! Usually I will just make fuzz pedals on vero since the circuits are so small. I only made 1 mistake with one of the caps in the wrong place, so 1st time I fired her up, nothing! Reinforces the ol, Rock it before you Box it! After I moved the cap to the proper place, it fired up perfectly!   Couple of pics:

inside  (kind of ironic that it was completed on 8/20!  LOL   - that was not planned...

and the pedal:
