Hadn't noticed the quad versus pair difference, but given that it's a transistor ladder, I'd be surprised if you need more than matched pairs.

Also, some people say that matching the capacitors used in transistor ladders is just as important. Haven't looked into it myself, but you might want to.

BCM847DS is another option, and one I've used myself. Matched dual NPN transistors in a single six pin SMD package. (Swine of a job to solder, but they're already matched, and they're in current production.)

The matching isn't amazing, but it's better than bothering to do it yourself.

"Don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these?"

More seriously, nice build :) I like how simple the graphics and lettering are, it works well with the theme.

Whoa. Superslick.

Tempted to get into 500 series myself, but it's a bit too spendy for me. (Eurorack is kinda punk, in that you can cheap out as much as you like.)

Today I Learned...

That, as well as the classic metal band Diamond Head, there is also some place in Hawaii called 'Diamond Head'.

Now I'm wondering if there's a place called 'Celtic Frost'.

Oh wow. Part of me is jealous, while the rest is reminding the first part I have nowhere to put anything like that!

There was an old book on home-DIY-ing a pipe organ, published several decades ago. The introduction claimed that pipe organs were more practical for DIY than guitar or anything else, as you could buy everything you need from a regular hardware store, no special tuning heads or strings or anything.

Open Discussion / DIY Website Tip

I've had trouble with embedding images from my website (alanp.info) for years, now. I always figured something about my computer was screwy.

TURN ON SSL! I had to go to the settings in my account on my provider's website to manually enable SSL Certification.

If you have your own domain, like me, and can't be arsed with dancing prancing wow-wee-zow-wee stuff, turn on SSL at the very least.

Now all the images in my Misc DIY threads work!

Pipe organs make everything better.

Most ordinary people have no. Freaking. IDEA. Just how much...

...

POWER

a good pipe organ has. Couple that with a virtuoso player...

I've read a Gutenberg Project book that claims that the pipe organ is the only really home DIY friendly musical instrument, as you can make it entirely with things from the hardware store -- you don't need tuners, you don't need guitar strings or similar... :)

'Jail' by Down is a pretty good anti-earworm, for me.

General Questions / Re: Identifying polarity.

For SMD chips, the side with Pin 1 will have more of a slope to the black plastic-y body than the other side. This seems to be universal.

If you are massively, hugely lucky, then there will be a silkscreen line on that end, or a dot. Do not bet on it.

The only thing I can say is that, in the long run, your boys will be (and are) more important than things, and you are blessed that they have pulled through as marvellously as they have! (Although I'm sure that some of those Magic cards could have paid for all those tools!)

I'm still very terrible at taking this advice, but I would say, meditate on the Serenity Prayer.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

It's a reference to The Kinks -- their legendary hit "You Really Got Me" had the guitar recorded on an amp that Ray Davies took a razor blade to, cutting the speaker cone to create distortion.
