Build Reports / Fat Pants Boost
December 02, 2014, 01:22:07 PM
My first reverse etch.  Didn't get it quite deep enough.  Overall happy for the first attempt.  The only primer I had was white and you can see I sanded thought the metallic blue inside the skull in places.  BTW, do you guys use primer withb Rustoleum Metallic spray?
Stupid mistake on this one - wired the soft toggle to the switch spot on the PCB!
Just a stock MB Fatpants:)

If I drop a buffer splitter in my Ernie Ball VP jr do I need to change the value of the pot?

General Questions / Grapevine Cap Questions
November 15, 2014, 03:59:12 AM
I just etched a v2 grapevine board.  Thought I had all the parts but realized that instead of 50n I have 47n.  Instead of 3n, I have 3n3.  Is this an issue?  Will there be a audible difference?  Or is it a matter of parts used in the original circuit?

Tech Help - Projects Page / Vox Wah V847 Mod gone bad
November 04, 2014, 03:09:08 PM
Had a guy ask me to make his Vox wah true bypass and add a power jack.  No problem I told him. (I've done several TB mods on Crybabies and the circuits are very close).  I found a good resource for the wiring and proceeded.  I chose to wire the switch using Madbeans Standard Wiring Diagram because it is what I'm used to rather than the one in other diagram.  I assumed that is where I made the mistake but after reviewing it multiple times I'm just not seeing it.
Basically, true bypass works and when I engage it, it squeals like a pig!!  I'm including photos and video.  Would appreciate a second/third... Pair of eyes.
(Instead of the 'Brown' wire I used white-all I had on hand).

Pictured below is the Madbean version of the switching diagram (I put my dashes the wrong direction;)

Here is the diagram for the mod itself.  I have not messed with any of the power wiring yet.

Also, beneath the squeal, it sounds like I can hear a faint guitar signal.  Can't be for sure though because it's so loud!

New Bass Day!  I had my eye on one in the store and the owner had agreed to take my banjo off my hands plus a little cash on my part for a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass.  I was talking with my buddy about it and he asked me to consider trading with him (he wanted the banjo).  So, I got this bass instead.
It is a Classic Vibe 50's P Bass body with a MIM Precision Bass neck with upgraded tuners.  He even went as far as to buy a new neck plate.  The neck feels nice.  The pickup sounds good to my ears (a little noisy but I was sitting directly in front of the computer monitor).
I'm not a bass player but I love to listen to talented bass players.  I now have no reason not to learn!!  I looked up a lesson on the following website and built an audio demo around the lesson.  I have a long way to go;)

Open Discussion / All in one Bass Pedal
October 26, 2014, 01:04:53 AM
I put a used Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass on hold and will pick it up on Monday.
I will be playing it in a small room with a small PA.  I would prefer not to buy an amp.  It would be very convenient to build a pedal with a direct out to plug into the PA.
What projects/effects would you recommend?
((I am not a bass player, but someone needs to play;)  I have limited knowledge on how to get the best time, no tip is too simple))

Arbor Les Paul copy.  Picked it up for $25 on CL.  It was a mess.  Had a kill switch in the place of the toggle.  Guy reamed out the tone pot hole to put the toggle switch.  With advice from the forum I fixed the gaping hole with a dowel. I replaced all the pots and knobs.  Put in a set of Duncan Performer Buck Shot (Distortions made in Korea) that I had laying around.  Total of about $70 tied up in it.  My 8 year old has been asking for a guitar - now he has one!

Open Discussion / Am I crazy?
October 16, 2014, 03:02:19 PM
Ok, don't answer that.  I do have a real question though:
I have a Les Paul copy (Arbor) that I picked up on CL for $25.  Hardware/electronics are a mess but I spent $40 at Guitarfetish and have a set of Duncan Design Distortion pickups to drop in there.
THE PROBLEM:  previous owner reamed out the neck tone pot hole to move the pickup selector there.

THE QUESTION:  can I tape off the inside/cavity and fill the hole with epoxy (Envirotex) and after curing drill a 3/8" hole for the tone pot and expect it to hold?

I've measured the existing hole and the skirt of the knob will cover it so aesthetics are not too much of a concern.  I tried filling it with wood glue and toothpicks but it wouldn't support the pressure of a drill bit (splintered to pieces).

If the Envirotex is a crazy idea I guess I'd go with a dowel.  Maybe there is some step down bushing to be had somewhere?
Thanks for your input.

Open Discussion / Cap material for guitar tone

Does it matter?  Know it is debated hotly.  I had reached the unscientific conclusion that it doesn't.  Got caught up researching it again last night and am asking the question again.  What do the collective genius of the Madbean world say?  Yes or no!

Open Discussion / MIM vs USA Strat Pups
October 07, 2014, 04:05:10 AM
Did a demo for a buddy who was interested in the difference.  Figured if through it up for anyone who might be interested.  It is a blind test.  Part 1 and Part 2.  One vs the other.  The demos have 3 guitar parts - neck, middle and bridge pickups.  Just straight guitar through an Ampeg GVT 52-112 mic'd with an SM57.
Honestly when I was A/Bing each one live I had a hard time hearing the difference.  Recorded it became much easier for me to say which I liked better.

Open Discussion / Source for large enclosures?
October 05, 2014, 12:04:03 AM
So I've had a guy ask he can add a delay, tremolo and reverb to the overdrive (he's decided to go with Azabache, thanks for the feed back on the JFET overdrive post!!).  He wants it all in one box.  It looks like it would need to be 8.5" in width with the projects/pcbs I'm looking at.  (TH Customs Azabache, 1776 Effects Multiplex Jr, Cardinal Trem, Rub a Dub Deluxe).
Any recommendations?  Ive checked Mammoth and PedalPartsPlus and 7.38" seems to be the largest.
Thanks,
Phillip

Have a friend that is set on a Jfet overdrive.  What would you recommend?  All he can say is that he likes the 'Liquid sunshine' OD but can't get any more specific than that.  What say you?

Thanks

Mods / Crybaby Wah Buffer Substitue
September 17, 2014, 03:39:55 PM
I have a guy wanting to keep the wah buffered bypass but just substitute the Klon buffer for the stock buffer.  I've made Wah true bypass and but never this.  My thought was to follow the schematic and insert the Klon buffer into the board at the "in' from the schematic and the out of the Klon buffer to return to the wah board after the 1st transistor in the schematic.  Here is a link to the schematic broken down into sections:
http://www.electrosmash.com/crybaby-gcb-95
The problem I'm having is that the component names on the silkscreen of the PCB do not match the names of the schematic components.
I know where to connect the ground and +9v.
Anyone follow me that can point me in the right direction?
I'm pretty sure of where the output of the Klon buffer would be soldered (transistor) but not the input:)

Thanks.
Phillip

Open Discussion / Is the DOD FX 90 Delay worth getting?

There is one used on CL.  It has a single MN3005.  Are there any cool DIY projects that use a single MN3005 (saw the Dirtbag Dlx calls for 2).  What would you offer?

Build Reports / Tourbillon Phaser
August 19, 2014, 01:57:58 PM
Got this PCB from aballen as a PIF.  Thanks bud!  It is subtle but sounds great!!  Shout out to Mike Flanagan for the clear orange led.  I tried out a red diffused but the clear orange did sound better so I went with it.  As you can see, I consider this a Madbean build seeing as so many others contributed:) This is a great community.
The most interesting feature of this phaser is the shape pot. It is really cool - it allows you to select the 'vowel' of the phase.
I've included an audio sample but it really is just me playing through the pedal rather than a proper demo of what the pedal can do.  The rhythm guitar has the most pronounced effect of the 2 guitars.  The melodic guitar has a really slow phase with shallow depth.  I probably went too subtle.  The other effects heard are from Garageband (Delay/Reverb).  It is best heard in headphones due to the stereo delay;)

I populated the board, turned out the lights and when I hit the switch (testing rig) there was a definite drop in volume.  The effect seems to work as expected but the volume drop was significant.  I appreciate any insights:)

Open Discussion / Grind Customs Tourbillon Phaser LED?
August 11, 2014, 01:16:38 PM
I saw where a 3mm Clear orange LED is recommended.  I only have regular (not clear) orange, yellow and red.  In clear I have Blue.
Should I order the clear orange and wait 2 woks or would I be happy with one of these above and build today?!

I've been using the PPP decal for a while now with no issues.  I recently bought a new can of Clear Coat (Krylon). I had been using Duplicolor.  The last 3 boxes I've separated have ended up with a small hole in the decal.  One small hole.  At first I thought it might be the fan in my makeshift paint booth pulling debris across the decal and making a very small tear.  It seemed unlikely.  Now I'm beginning to wonder if it might be something in the aerosol can that is causing the issue.
Anyone have any insight?  Should I go back to Duplicolor?  Am I overlooking something?

Open Discussion / EHX Toggle Source?
August 08, 2014, 10:32:43 PM
Buddy of mine has the pedal below.  The toggle is missing the nut and wiggles a little with pressure.  It is PCB mount which I assume over time might cause damage to the pins and/or PCB.  The size is smaller than the mini toggles I buy.  Anyone know what size these nuts are? (I'm so immature, couldn't type this sentence without smiling).
Also, where to buy (local hardware store?)

Build Reports / King of the Britons
August 04, 2014, 03:48:25 AM
This is a GuitarPCB King of the British PCB that TreeSlayer gave me (Thanks:) Had some what I thought were issues with the gain knob but turns out this pedal just doesn't clean up too much.  Pretty Marshally high gain pedal.  I ended up leaving off C2 completely which sounded better to my ear.  Lower values were recommended over on the GuitarPCB forum (those guys were extremely helpful in helping me determine if I had an issue) but completely gone sounded best in my rig:)  Learned a lot in the process. Here are some pics and a 'Rushed' sound clip.
