Very cool! Nice build.  Agree about the knobs, they kind of tell the story of the raspy fuzz sitting in the middle of the scooped.

Build Reports / Custom Aquaboy + Boost
December 10, 2023, 07:17:06 PM
This was a special build for me.  I few years back, Spotify turned me onto the band Plague Vendor and I became a big fan.  I haven't been a fan of a band to this degree since I was in high school in the 90s.  So, it's been a lot of fun.  Anyways, I got the opportunity to meet the band after their show a few months back.  Talking with the guitarist I offered to make him a pedal.

He currently uses a MXR Carbon Copy for a slap back delay on lead parts.  He said that the CC was a little clean for his taste.  Also, he used to use a boost at the same time but ditched it because it was difficult to turn both on at the same time.   So, I thought a DM-2 with a boost would be a good alternative.

Luckily, I had two built up Aquaboys in my stash.  I chose the JFET boost Barry had GPCB. I just had to move the feedback pot with some offboard wiring.  Needed to shoehorn everything, but it worked.  I might want to do a layout for a utility board at some point but this worked well.  The graphic are no-film but I used a paint marker on the label to block in the white.  Enclosure is mint green from Tayda.

Great build!  Agree with Jess, that spray on the knobs is a great touch.

Can you tell me more about the project?  Who did the PCB and what are the modes?

I might try and join in as well, if the time difference permits.
Whasup Main?  Haven't seen you around these parts in awhile.  Hope you are well  8)

That's super awesome!  Congrats.   8)

I've been itching to do a layout again.  I might recommend trying KiCad or another free software on your next one.  EAGLE is EOL and it will be a more of a bummer to switch the more skill you get with EAGLE.

Was wondering, could the level trim be wired on the front panel as a poor mans boost?  Does it have a good range?

I don't see much benefit there because it only makes the delays louder which the Mix control already handles. Plus, the LVL control could cause unwanted distortion on the compander if it is set too high.
Ahh, okay.  Misunderstood the function from first read through.  Thanks!

Just looked up the data sheets: 3009 has 256 stages (it's small also), so, definitely not that one.  3008 has 2048 and 3005 has 4096.  I think the 3005 should be in the Aquapuss and the 3008 in the PC.  3008 seems long for a chorus but I know the VFE Choral Reef has one.

Are you sure it was a 3005?  I believe the original had a SAD1024 and later a MN3008 or MN3009.  If you have the right chips in there you should really only have to adjust the bias trims (2) to get it working.

I have to keep the TAILS switch on, otherwise I get no effect at all. I'm not sure why that is happening, but I'm happy enough with how it is working and don't want to "poke the bear" by messing with the effect too much because of how much effort it took to get it working in the first place.
This is how the pedal works, mine is the same.

I've had the best luck with word of mouth or through instagram.  Not sure if you have an IG account for your builds.  It's a pain, but that's where you find people.  Some reverb or craigslist listings could work too.  List them as hand wired and highlight the high end parts.

Selling is kind of a pain, in general, you are kind of obligated to fix things if they break down.  Also, it's a drag having people kick the tires on things you put so much into.  If you just want to clear shelf space, I've always had a better experience just giving them to friends.  Last year I needed funds for a synth and I sold pedals.  Shut down that as soon as I got the money I was after because of the afore mentioned PITA.
