Requests / Connector spacing
January 23, 2024, 06:45:03 PM
I like to use connectors for power, jack in and out, and sometimes for the foot switch. Would it be possible to consider designing for the connector spacing on future boards, like maybe the new standard series.

For instance, I run into the issue in the picture a good bit.

Ive been curious about this one and happened across one at a good price so I figured I'd play it for a few minutes and then take it apart. Anybody have any educated guesses what circuit it may be based around?

And for fun... To show how they did the triangles

Ok, hear me out.

Some amps have a built-in foot switch that doesn't require a battery or any other external power to light the on-off LEDs. I have a Vox AC30CC and the two switches are for reverb and tremolo. It uses a simple TRS cable. There is DC present on both the tip and the ring. 20V and 13V respectively. It's looks like the hot wires are grounded to turn the effect off.

It's seems like it would be possible use the dc on one of these lines to provide a regulated 9v supply for an auxiliary jack for other effects to use.

Is it possible to split and isolate the DC so that the effect switch still works?

Looking for something low profile that doesn't touch the underside of the PCB. On-off-on

Does anyone sell enclosures like the ones used for the new Maestro effects? Not looking for the old sharp triangle type.

I'm building the Skoolie and was thinking what else could possibly be crammed in with it... Tails, duh.

Anybody possibly know of a bypass board with tails?

A friend brought over a EHX Ripped Speaker fuzz. It's a gated fuzz type thing. Sounds pretty good, kinda muff-ish, but not really. I'm just curious... Is this something new for ehx? Are they rehashing something with mods, or did they copy something else?

Pedalpcb Paper Scratcher is the only schematic I found

3 big trannies are 3904, the 4th is smd and has no marking

Build Reports / DIY Attenuator
April 09, 2022, 03:04:30 PM
I put together this attenuator for my AC30 using a Parts Express 16ohm 100w L-pad. This is my first experience with any power soak type stuff.

It was tougher than I thought to get it in a 125B with all the 14 gauge wire. I had to sand the sides of the L-pad to get it to fit. I used a couple layers of thermal paste with an extra aluminum plate between the L-pad and the enclosure face for maximum contact.

After burning it in for a bit on some milder settings, I cranked the AC30 all the way up and put the attenuator dial almost all the way down. It gets pretty hot, but I think it's manageable. It got a little smokey at a couple of points, but I think that's normal for new ones

The left switch is for 2 treble bleed caps. I used a 2.2u and  4.7u. I can't hear a difference with either. I'll prob trade them out later.

This is a VFE Distortion 3 & Rocket EQ in a 1590BB

The idea is sort of a Randy Rhoads in a box type pedal since he was known for using the MXR Distortion+ into the old blue MXR 10 band graphic EQ. Since the D+ lacks a tone control it's a perfect combo.

Edit: as noted below, there is also a nod to Marshall with the knobs and the red and green LED asymmetric clipping.

The JST PH 2.0mm type connectors make it modular if I ever want to pull the boards out and put them in my eurorack pedalboard. These are smaller than the XH 2.54mm type which wouldn't have fit in this smaller enclosure.

I added the dress nuts to the A-1091 Tayda footswitch. The ones from SB didn't fit, and Mouser was the only place I could find a M12x0.75

I also added a center detent to the 9mm "Soft" pot. Here is a walk thru of how to do it.

Open Discussion / Low noise resistors for EQ
November 13, 2021, 03:38:49 PM
I'm about to do a VFE Rocket parametric EQ build and the official units had the red PRP brand which are supposedly low noise, audio grade resistors.

The unit I have still has some noise even when set flat and there is no boosting. It's not bad but it's there. I figure it's the nature of the beast, especially with high values, but I'd like to explore the options.

https://www.aikenamps.com/index.php/resistor-types-does-it-matter

This article explains about resistor noise and mentions the wirewound type as least noisy because they are only subject to 1 of the 3 types of noise. Does anyone have any experience using wirewound in this regard?

I have also see references to the "bulk metal foil" type resistors as being a newer type with lower noise. Anybody know about these?
