FYI, I'll be releasing a small bundle of utility PCBs most likely in January which will include a JFET matcher. Also, germanium transistor tester, 14mm pot mount, 9mm pot mount and a multi-voltage board for prototyping.

Sweet!

It's a shame that Futurlec service has gotten so poor.  I was really happy a long time ago when I was stocking up and got some of their value packs.
The shipping time has always been too long.  I haven't ordered from them in well over a year.    Much better service and shipping from Tayda.

I have a part-time, early morning job delivering the newspaper so I'm driving around for
a couple of hours long before the sun comes up.   It was about -4 degrees farenheit ( -20 celsius ).
Super cold.  It's so cold that paved roads which are usually almost black, turn to white and have little crystals in them.
Here in the midwest, it usually doesn't get this cold until January or February.

( It is supposed to get above freezing on Wednesday )

Build Reports / Re: Lab Series L5 Preamp build notes

Many thanks for the tips.  I haven't got around to building mine yet so these tips will certainly help.
I bought the matching enclosure and it's spectacular.

I've got a Tiny Giant that I use as my bench amp and I really like it.  I can see getting another
and pairing it with the Lab L5 preamp.

As with others,  I want to build more ( or at least as much ) as I buy.  The backlog is large and ever-present.
It seems like 2016 was a good year for many great projects from several people.

While playing Hitman, there's an episode where your target is a singer in a pop rock band.   One way to get access is to disguise
yourself as Abel De Silva, a replacement drummer that has an awesome english accent.  Just did this and played the drums
as 47.   Incredibly lol funny.  :) :) :)

Very nice build .  I like that controlled octave with the LDR.  I also like the etch.
It has a good vibe to it.

Here's a tip for beginners and veterans.  I saw somewhere that someone was using Blu-tack to hold parts in place.
I found some Loctite Fun-Tak for a couple of bucks at the local walmart and picked it up.   It works great for holding that odd shaped
component on the parts side while you solder on the other side.  Before this,  I was using scotch tape which could be hard to work with.
Now, the fun-tak is just sticky enough and reuseable.  I've been soldering for years and years and never picked up on this tip.
( probably because I learned to solder before blu-tack was invented ... man, I'm old  :) )

For many components, such as resistors and caps with long leads, I still just bend the leads at an angle to hold them in place.  The fun-tak
works really well for things like IC sockets and SIP sockets.  Stuff with leads to short to bend.

The latter you can actually use with a mid boost switch. Which is something that is mandatory for basically all Muffs. The scoop may sound great in the bedroom, but in a band setting it will murder your sound faster then an AK-47. I've installed the Skreddy mids switch in all my Muffs and just flicking it to the flat setting is basically all you need to reappear in a mix again.

Very true.   When I was a teenager, I didn't know much about EQ in general, so I always wondered why my guitar would sound buried in a band sound.
But I always loved that distorted, fuzzy sound.   Since it was my first experience with distortion, it made a huge impression on me.

Well, my concerns were completely unfounded.   UPS just delivered my Tayda order.  This order arrived quicker than any
other order I've put in with them.  One difference I noted is that the package was shipped by UPS.  All my other Tayda packages
came from USPS. ( or DHL ) I also noticed that when I placed the order and selected a shipping option.  ( USPS wasn't an option for some reason )
I guess it was the size or part selection of the order.

The package arrived at the same time as a Mouser order that I put in on the same day.  ( 12/6 ) Highly satisfied with both companies.
Now I've just got to get to work on that backlog !   :)

One of the first pedals that I ever bought way back around 1980 was a Big Muff Deluxe.  I didn't know the differences between op amps
and transistors then, but I really liked the sound of the Deluxe.   ( for some reason, when you turned the compressor on, it was in parallel
with the fuzz ... not my cup of tea )  So my favorite is the op amp  version.

OT:   I would really like to build a clone of the compressor.  By itself, it had a over-the-top kind of squish effect that I liked.  Totally
not transparent.  I've read it was a soul preacher, and I've breadboarded one of those and it didn't have that sound.  If anyone knows
of a working soul preacher circuit, I'd be very interested.
