Open Discussion / Re: What do you love about pedal building?

I like working on "new" circuits the most. I love cranking out a schematic in Eagle and then moving to the breadboard to see how poorly it performs.  ;D

I second the nomination of Echo Fix. They are awesome.

However, I've bought tape loops for the RE-201 from these guys on ebay and they were high quality.

That's awesome.  Really visually underscores the whole "bucket brigade" concept.

Yeah, a bummer. That guy was a pioneer of sorts (from what I can gather).

It's a bargain at twice the price!

Nice score, man.  8)

I have a PRS that I think is fantastic, but I love my Gibsonís and appreciate that they are different than PRS.  Maybe Iím part of the problem.  ;-)

Same here. I like for PRS to break the rules, but I want Gibson to stay in their damn lane.  ;D

Has the relay switch, which I think at a mechanical level achieves a similar workflow, replaced them in modern building?

Well, sort of. Your input signal is always running through part of the flip-flop setup, whereas with a relay and microcontroller, you can set it up for true bypass (if you want). It's also less parts and no EOL hen's teeth (through-hole JFETs). And, you can do other interesting things, like have it move the input to ground for XX ms during the switching process to eliminate switch pop from discharging coupling cap (or wherever it might be coming from). The flip-flop is/was an effective and elegant solution, but as I said above, it's got a big footprint and now critical parts are scarce/costly.

The more I get into building, the more I realize how far I have to go in understanding.
Me, too!

Damn, that sucks!

If it were me, I'd go to a luthier. But I don't know what your woodworking skill level is. Mine level is "the suck".

Congrats! Those are such awesome amps.

I blame CJ for this lol!!!

I'll gladly take the blame for this.  ;D

I've always found it funny that, certainly by today's standards, these amps look very classy, vintage and modest yet they produce some of the best metal tones ever recorded.

The look says "Grandma's wicker furniture", but the tone says "Satan".  8)

The manual for this thing the is longest and most comprehensive one I've ever seen for a piece of music gear, including recording interfaces, digital multieffects, etc. It's insane!  ;D

I'm still not sure what the hell all the knobs and switches do, but so far I like it.  ;D

The way Mesa has things set up is definitely NOT like any other type of amp I've played.
