A friend borrowed my Mad Prof Deep Blue delay I built, you know the story, he twisted my arm as friends do and it never made it back.
Everyones happy and a reason to build another one, this time upgraded to the mods that Bean suggests in the Etcher's paradise section and also with onboard relay bypass. So here the "Ocean Blue", back home on my board.

And some "Sweet Manuka", version of BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive built after Aion schematic also with the mods suggested to caps value.
I added a clipping switch because why not, difference is subtle in this circuit.
Manuka Honey is by the way the top shelf grade of Honey we export from NZ for top dollars (I believe NZ is the biggest honey exporter in da world) as it has healing properties, made by happy bees (hopefully) from native Manuka trees.
The graphics are another kiwi icon, the Buzzy Bee, a classic kids toy here and my grandson, who lives in the States has one too, of course. Had to be a honey coloured pcb as you'd expect.

Build Reports / On a Fuzz Bender...
October 11, 2020, 03:14:13 PM
I'm on a Fuzz Bender at the moment... more fruits of a rainy weekend boxed up.
A Keeley Fuzz Bender based on Storyboardists schematic with the difference of having split the dual gang bias pot into to single B100K pots, so I can twiddle with the bias of Germanium and feedback loop of opamp individually.
Quite like that, gives it even more versatility and I do like extra knobbies and tweaks.
It is indeed a very versatile Fuzz that covers tons of ground and then a very efficient active tone stack to bend the tone around from brutal edgy to lofi nasal and anywhere.
Transistor is an Amperex 2N2430 that I got yonks back from Smallbear, now free to roam in a pedal again.

Build Reports / Skreddy!
October 09, 2020, 01:50:50 PM
Rainy weekend here, great chance to do some boxing up of stuff that's coming together.

A trio of delicious Skreddys here, the Screwdriver, Hybrid Fuzz and Lunar Module (Called it Eclipse Fuzz).
All have a similar circuit topology but all have a unique flavour for sure and there's so many sounds in them with all the tweaking that can be done, need to spend some more time with them whacking it out. The neighbours will love it...  ;D

Hybrid Fuzz has a AC 176 Germ in there that fitted the bill and sounded nice. I was lucky to get a wee box full of GE trannies from a tube collector, most of the PNP but a few NPNs and this was one of them. Score.

Screwdriver, such a cool sounding circuit version, love it. Had one a while back which got twisted out of my hands, so good to have another one in my hands. AC187 in this and some Telefunken BC109Cs.

Lunar Module, I called mine Eclipse Fuzz. Very cool sounding fuzz too. Dark side of the moon.  8)
Q1 and Q2 are Telefunken BC108C and Q3 is BC 109B, all measured just above 400hfe.

Well that click bait title obviously worked... LOL.

Anyway, you might be disappoined to learn that "Female Vibes" is just another stompbox.
This time a ROG trivibe on a VipFX board and a MB Current Lower. Fitted nicely in the box with offset top mounted jacks and a great sounding fun combo.
I do like some vibe settings layered onto the swoosh of the Mistress.
And my lady loved and voted for the Paisley graphics which I dig too. So all is in peace and equilibrium.
Relay bypass switching is a home brew board based on the excellent Coda bypass system, thanks Benoit for sharing that stuff!

And a MB Honeydripper, what a cool unique sounding circuit, doesn't quite compare. Tight fit with top mounted jacks and the relay board is a finishline from 1776 fx. I 'even had to resort' to using metal frame jacks (nothing wrong with that of course) instead of the bulky Neutrik PVC ones I usually go for (those didn't quite fit).

I have a bunch of PNP Germanium trannies that could fit into a fuzz face circuit, could I build the Fuzz Duo with voltage converter to work with PNP silicon and Germanium switchable? I think I'd just need to change C3 polarity and it should work.
I can't see why not so please let me know if I'm missing something drastically here, cheers.

Build Reports / Cab Driver and Aurora Overdrive
September 27, 2020, 11:14:08 PM
Cab Driver is a simplified version of DSM OmniCabSim (no headphone out, XLR out, direct out or so) built after pedalpcb schematic.
Quite like the graphics on this one. Nice versatile sounds out of it, still have to try it for recording but first impression is great and useful tone tweaker tool.

Aurora Drive is Greer Lightspeed OD, very nice sounding and doesn't mess with the guitar sound, like it. Enclosure is recycled and has some holes filled, hence the black spray paint. Like the black though anyway.

Build Reports / Night Sweats and a Big As Bassman
September 26, 2020, 08:27:22 PM
Night Sweats is a double combo of the ol' Crowther Hotcake (2003 version) on top or select the toggle down and we have a Clark Gainster on tap for the more benign low to mid gains.
Works well together and gives a bit more variety in my beloved 125B with jacks on top format. As I don't do 1590As (I need top mounted jacks for my board) this is my way of squeezing extra juice out of the space.

Big As Bassman is my version of Catalinbread 5F6A, added the presence control on dash rather than inside trimmer, gave it a 9 to 18V selector with charge pump inside  (it sounds soooo good on 18 V I think....) and split the 4P2T switch into two 2DPDT which allows for more tonal variety while we're at it. Also the 2PDTs are easier to get and maybe more reliable than the 4PDTs I have a feeling...
Anyway, lovin' it. Big bold classic and a lot of variety to be had with this. SMD 4393 trannies.
Acrylic faceplate, laser decal, onboard Coda relay. Works for me.

Build Reports / Blue Cashmere and some Weta Fuzz
September 20, 2020, 06:28:49 PM
Some more boards finished up and boxed, first is a double whammy, two separate circuits in one.
Blue Cashmere is a BJFE Baby Blue OD in top row of knobs, activated by select toggle switch up.
Nice grind to it, a classic BJFE JFET circuit that a muso friend of mine put me onto, he has a fairly old much loved and beaten up original (they go some crazy prices these days).
Select toggle down and it's the Kasha OD but without the 4 slector switch (didn't fit anymore). It has the "hot" mode hardwired and it has the 'turbo' switch like the original to push it more.
Then there's a switchable 9to18V charge pump circuit that affects both circuits for some more headroom and push, like it on both circuits. Punches better with the Baby Blue OD for sure.

Weta Fuzz is my incarnation of John Lyon's excellent 'Scarab Fuzz'. Very nice and versatile, still have to give it lots more playing time to discover the options. Fun. Hours of fun.

A Weta is by the way an impressive and very cool native NZ insect:
"They are heavy herbivorous Orthoptera with a body length of up to 100 mm (3.9 in) excluding their lengthy legs and antennae, and weigh about 20–30 g. A captive giant wētā (Deinacrida heteracantha) filled with eggs reached a record 70 g, making it one of the heaviest documented insects in the world[22] and heavier than a sparrow"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C4%93t%C4%81

And here's your friendly OZ guy Brett Kingman having a play with original, being much better at demoing it than I ever would be:

Two recent builds just buttoned up:
First is Autoquack, a Mad Prof Snowy White Autowah.
Ever since another friend wrestled the first one I had on an etched board out of my hands never to be returned I wanted another one.
So here's my home brew one with Coda relay bypass design.
Sounds great with the BAT41 at D3 position and a 1uF electro in pace of the 2u2 in the decay circuit (as I found recommended on Fuzzdog build docs).
Love me some quack...

And Honey Pie.
A Vemuram Jan Ray with added clipping options because why not and added switchable 9 to 18V cahrgepump because why not.
Overdrives. Why not.

General Questions / Build doc for SuperJudge anyone?
August 26, 2020, 11:22:58 PM
I found at the bottom of the box a Super Judge board, anyone got the build docs for that please?

Maybe Jimi? You do save everything don't ya, good man?  ;)

Build Reports / Soulfull Drive
August 16, 2020, 11:04:29 PM
Based on Aion FX Thulcandra schematic, this is an adaptation of Xotic Sould Driven Allan Hinds signature drive. Aion changed the interal dip switches with a bass pot which makes a whole lotta sense.
Another great overdrive in the box... which one to play today...

Build Reports / Rippa, Kaimanawa and Full Moon Fever
August 13, 2020, 11:59:53 PM
Here's finally after a long wait on shipping and parts (sounds familiar...?) the first three fruits of my mucking around with diptrace. And I quite enjoy diptrace over eagle, works a lot more intuitive for me.

Also I incorporated the Coda FX relay bypass, big thanks to Benoit to nutting it all out for that in the first place and to Dan (Schutone) for getting me into it and holding my hand while contemplating it! Cheers for the help!

Rippa Drive is a hotrodded version of EQD Talons (thanks Chuck for the advice on it!), also has 9to18V switchable chargepump (hi/lo switch), clipping three position selector and three position presence switch.

Kaimanawa is adaptation of VFE fiery Red Horse. Kaimanawa is the Maori name for the NZ wild horses (which were introduced and then made off into the wild. Beautiful horses they are).

Full Moon Fever is a hot rodded version of JHS Moonshine v2:

I scored a bunch of ol skool Germanium transistors and wondering what methods and test circuits you guys would recommended for sorting through them. Looking obviously mostly for FF and Bender suitable sets in there.
Do you find R.G. Keen method like on Geofex site the way to go or other hints? TIA!

Has anyone got the build doc of Snowy White Autowah / MB "Autobahn" project? Cheers!
#35
I have seen this now in several schematics of Vfe designs, having two 100n caps parralel to ground for power filtering.
What's the point of that, what benefit would that have for example in comparison to put a single 220n cap to ground there?
I'm sure Peter was thinking of something there... he's that clever sorta guy...

#36
Just looking at Vfe schematics to learn and understand stuff, Peter uses the NE555 chip which is dirt cheap as chargepump in some circuits.
This example is from the Fiery Red Horse. Can someone explain me how that works and what voltages can we coax out of that, what are advantages and downsides to the more usual TC1044 circuits? Thanks!

Never seen one of those so well demoed and nice chord voicings to boot. Tom Bukovac, session man.
Fun watch and that doppler effect..... sigh...

So since Eagle seems on the way out and there's been a few great posts here lately from peeps taking the plunge into KiCAD I'm wondering which tutorial series or tips seem most useful.
I did a quick google and there's a bunch, just wondering if you good folks have recommendations at hand which end of the pool to dive into.
Cheers!

I just pulled an almost finished Dirtbag Deluxe board from the rubble and dust of my "I'll get back to that when I have the last missing parts" bin and indeed had the last missing parts to complete it, yay. After a quick ballpark bias setting I do get delay signal, even more yay.
Now I wonder if there's a good tutorial or hints how to bias it with an oscilloscope.
I do have an old school analog scope and a cheapie frequency generator. I did a quick google search but am wondering if more experienced guys here can point me in the direction of which method would squeeze the best out of it?

Any hints and pointers appreciated, also because I have a Total Recall board in the works as well which could also be in for this me thinks.

Paging Scruffie I guess....  8)

Build Reports / Stellar Fuzz.
February 28, 2020, 11:08:03 PM
Stellar Fuzz, on pedalpcb board take on Noel Cornet Revu Fuzz. All in all a nice BigMuff take with lesser gain and lesser mid scoop, nice singing sustain and all. First impression: I dig it.
2N5133 trannies, laser decal with acrylic faceplate, relay bypass courtesy 1776 fx. Fluegelhorn and violins singing in the background...
