Happy new year, everyone!

I've been taking some voice lessons with a great teacher the last few months, and wanted to say thanks with a gift of sorts. I figure a pedal is apt, but can't figure out which one...

Then I had the idea to maybe put 3 baby boards horizontally into a 1590BB and give him something he can have/leave in his teaching room that has some useful effects.

I can swear I've seen someone do this, but can't find it.

I'm thinking a cavedweller, rabbit hole and egghead would cover quite a bit of sonic territory, but would love to hear any thoughts on a better combo? Would love a tremolo w/ tap in there, but I don't think a baby board exists with such functionality...

I'm also not sure how to wire it up just yet. I'd like to be able to switch the effects on/off. Maybe a main stomp on the right, and an A/B/Y on the left? Might just have to use some toggles up above, which is simple enough.

Any thoughts/advice would be great! As always, thank you in advance!

You should be able to fit 3 baby boards in a 1590BB (I did one a few years ago). I think the simplest and most useful bypass would just be one footswitch per effect like any other multi. An A/B/Y isn't going to be possible with a two-state mechanical switch.

My personal choice would be compressor, OD/Dist, and delay which covers a lot of ground. There is no MBP baby board tremolo right now (although there will be one in about another month). You would not be able to fit in a tap tempo with three effects in a 1590BB without designing a custom PCB, I think.

Madbean and Alan both posted while I was typing this so if there's some info repeating excuse me please.

Heres a guide from GuitarPCB that will give you some ideas on building one.  It's not all Inclusive but it's a good starter and will give you some info.

http://www.guitarpcb.com/PDF-Files/Combo%20Build%20Wiring%20Tutorial.pdf

I've built a few multis in 1590bb's and your layout is real important.  Board mounted pots sometimes help and sometimes hinder things so just make sure everything will fit before you start drilling. Depending on the width of the board they can be placed on their side if you use wired pots to get some room.  Side placement of boards opens up more grounding possibilities so watch for that.

I like having a switch for each board but in a BB it may be difficult to hit the middle one easily. Depends I guess on how agile you are 😊.  Putting in a ABY switch isn't something I cant speak on but wiring the boards/switches up is just like doing a single one but the jack out of first switch goes into the jack in of the next switch (and so to the next) and the out on your end switch goes to the output jack.  The way I keep from getting confused on the wiring is how do I get the bypass signal from the in to the out jack and it sort of simplifies it for me.

Anyway, take a look at the guide and you should be able to get some good info from there.  Getting everything to fit right is the most time consuming thing for me.  If you execute the planning phase correctly things will fall into place much easier.

Here is a 3-in-1590BB build that I did a while ago:

This one has an Xotic AC Booster, RC Booster, and BB Preamp in it.

Like Brian said, the easiest way to do it is to have three footswitches, and have all the circuits linked in series.

As for what three, I would think an Afterlife, Hipster/Runt, Smoothie would make a fun combo  :)

That pedal is a happy family!  I did a build like this too for a friend 2 years back; it was a muff, octave up, and octave down.  It was a lot of stuff shoved into a box :).

The problem with a 3 in 1 ina1590BB is foot space. Does this guy have little feet? Don't get me wrong, I love multis, I have done many, one had 4 stomps and 4 switches, things got right in the top.

Pedal building is like the opposite of sex.  All the fun stuff happens before you get in the box.

Wow - this forum always comes through! Thanks a lot for the suggestions and posts, guys!

After multiple suggestions, the Runt (with a reutz mod, of course) will take care of distortion. He teaches a lot of floyd and radiohead, so a cavedweller delay is also in.

He's worked with me to get better picking and volume control, especially while singing (hard to break bad habits after 23 years of playing), and he's mentioned it affects many other students, so I feel like any compressor wouldn't be used (again, for teaching - gigging is another story, but I don't think he'd use this for gigging - open to persuasion, but just mentioning).

I do have a pretty good schematic for a simple LFO tap tremolo, but not sure how small I could get it.

Since the idea is that this is a teaching aid, I wonder if 3 stomps is too much. I feel like the delay and tremolo would rarely (if ever) be used at the same time, so I wonder if 2 stomps would suffice - one for the runt, the other for the delay/tremolo, with a simple toggle at the top edge to switch between delay and tremolo effects. I could put the tap for the tremolo either into a small 1590a with an 1/8" jack connector, or just put a small pushbutton up top someplace.

As always, any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks again, guys!

Oh wait; mine isn't in a 1590BB.  It was in a 1790.  I don't think I would put 3 footswitches on a 1590BB unless one was at the top.

Do yourself a big favor and use a 1590DD instead. Life is too short to try and put 3 in a BB. The extra size won't matter in a studio setting, and it will save you many headaches.  :)

Truth, but a 1590DD is huge. However, this did get me looking, and I found a slightly larger than 1590BB size in a 6500 enclosure, which is about an inch wider and taller that I might try out. https://www.mammothelectronics.com/products/4s6500-enclosure

That could get me out of trouble. Thanks!:-)

The 1790 is smaller than a 1590DD and does great with 3 1590B sized effects.

For some build reference, here are 2 builds of mine, each with 3 foot switches:
1790 - http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=21618
1590DD - http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=23022

the 1790 looks like it's basically the same size as the 6500, give or take a millimeter - and based on your build pics, I think it'll work... I have a much better sense of it now.

Thanks for all the help, guys! Probably February for the build by the time I get all the parts and some time to get down to it, but will definitely post pics. Thanks again! :-)

For reference,  the 1790 and 6500 are based on the 1590XX

Big fan of the DD for multi builds.  They're not that big once you start filling them if you're not organised...

Other than that, I don't mind BBs for builds with 2 effects, but for 3 switches, you need a DD imo, just for ergonomics.
