Yeah, I do gain stage them.  Q1/Q2 are usually pretty close, but I tend to set it up so Q2 has an hfe that's 10 higher or so.  It jumps a bit to Q3 usually, but it varies.

Basically, I screen them into bins and then I listen on a board with sockets.  If they sound good, then I solder them into the board I'm building.
