I came across about this guitars some years ago, the luthier is apparently quite well known in Argentina and, although the guitars are not my cup of tea, I have to recognise they are quite original.

Now they are launching a crowfunding campaing and it looks quite appealing to me,

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/musk/musk-skateguitars/faqs

For that price I would get one myself, but it only ships to US.

I don't know the guy personally, I am no affiliated with them just thought it was a nice project to share.

New Weissenborn day! (I actually got it two weeks ago)

After being playing slide guitar for a while, I decided to jump into the world of lap-steels. I also wanted something acoustic so I can just take it whenever I am motivated and play it and to be able to take it to the park in summer (living in East London that's what the cool kids do).
So a not too expensive weissenborn sounded like a good idea. Left hand (tone-bar hand) is not as easy as it may seem and it gets tired quite fast when I play, but I have spent the last two weeks listening to Jerry Douglas like crazy...

Hi everybody!

This is my first post in a while... I haven't built a pedal since I moved to London (about 18 months ago) and that needs to end now!.

I brought some boards with components from Spain on my last trip but I need to get some enclosures.

I used to etch my boxes before, but I live in a small flatshare and that is not an option at the moment, so I thought I would give a try to the laser cutter I have at work and see if I can get it to engrave powder coated boxes.

I have gotten some good quality ones from stevie1556 here in the forum (UK based) in the past, but he has not been active since December '16.

I did a quick search and found this shop in Edinburgh, but they are a little bit expensive and found no reference of their work whatsoever:
http://www.timetravelaudio.co.uk/shop/components/powder-coated-die-cast-aluminium-enclosures/

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

This is not really complex stuff, but it was fun to make. I am using Arduino and Max/Msp for the first project and Arduino only for the second one.

The things I am doing now are far more technical (building plugins/signal analysis and synthesis/real-time dsp...) but that module from the first semester was really cool. The things my mates did were amazing too, ranging from art instalations to other musical stuff or even game interaction.

Btw, I've attached a screen shot of my most recent plugin, let me know what do you think.

Perhaps some of you already knew this, but it's new for me. A friend show it to me and I think it's a great resource to take into account when ordering pcbs:

MXR Variphase!

Saw it on EffectBay.

They don't ship to Spain (at least that item), but that is cheap!

Open Discussion / Has this been done before?

Here it is what came to my mind, but I don't know if there's a diy project for this:

A pedal in you chain that would act as an envelope detector (with sensitivity/threshold controls) with an expression/cv output to control any expression parameter in another pedal.
This way you could have envelope controlled rate or mix in any pedal with a jack for an expression pedal.

Thanks to Cortexturizer btw, whose latest project gave me the idea.

I think it can be done digitally with Rob's CV-controlled pot (or with a less complicated setup), but there has to be an easier (purely analog) way to do it.

Is to soon to guess if this is FV-1 or belton based?  ;D

Sounds cool, but there are no strange sounds in this one....

EDIT: they say it is based on the foundations of the Ghost Echo, so it could be based in the belton brick, maybe the BTDR-3?

RoyalOhm Metal Film 0.6w 1% tolerance, same size as 1/4w vishays

My supplier sells them cheaper than the vishays (half the price to be clear) and I don't see no reason why these couldn't be used in pedal builds.

Looking at the datasheet I'm not that sure these are 1% I think tolerance is 2%. It also seems current noise level might be lower the higher the power (but that's only a guess based on last page graphic and I don't think it really matter for this kind of application).

Datasheet for reference: http://www.royalohm.com/pdf/metal%20film.pdf

Open Discussion / New diy community on facebook
April 15, 2015, 10:04:46 PM
First of all: I LOVE this forum. I've grown as diyer here and feel at home (that has not happened to me in any other forum in the hole internet).

That said, I think it is cool to support new  initiatives if they could help the community and our knowledge to expand.

Gabriel Tudoran (Analog Sound/Riot Devices) also known for the creation of the tube GTFO od and other guy called  Michael Fotakis (I haven't met him) have started a group on facebook called "Open Source Equipment" and are working on a webpage.
The thing just started and this is what Gabriel said about it:
Quote
Ok... so i'm back from a small holiday. A small announce for whom is interested. Had an idea sometime ago ... of an open-source community that is going to develop, guess what? Well open-source equipment (from audio to... don't know, sky is the limit) - all project will be and will remain in public domain.
The scope of this is sharing knowledge / learning from each-other and develop ideas.
The name of this project is OSEQ - Open Source Equipment and you can find us here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/opensource.equipment/ and later, you can find us on: http://www.oseq.org
The main word on this project will be: SHARE and COLLABORATE... so i invite you all to do that Emoticono smile
Keep close and see you all later.

I joined the group and would keep an eye open, it might be interesting. (Athough I can't vouch for it yet).

I have no afiliation whatsoever.

I like it though. A cool adittion to a studio and is not that expensive........ for a mic (well, maybe it is).
it could be diy-able maybe?

Open Discussion / Comic books: what are you into?
April 03, 2015, 01:10:12 PM
I love comics, but not the "heroic" stuff (DC nor Marvel).

I'm now rereading "100 bullets" from start and just finished "Blacksad" (if you like black-novel check that one out).
Huge fan of Mike Mignola too, I've read all the Hellboy stuff and I'm following "Baltimore" right now.
"The Last Man" was another interesting one.
"The Walking Dead": meh.... better see the series.

Other guys I admire are Moebius and Milo Manara (the last one it's famous for his naughty stuff, but has some psychedelic comics too. A true artist he is.)

Almost forgot Frank Miller. Love the Dark Horse stuff.

....so I can trace it?

A friend of mine just demoed one and swears by it. We've been talking about this one and how it compares to a ZD or a TS808.
He said: it is warm, transparent*  ;D and clear and has no midrange like the TS808.

I would like to compare it to my beloved NOC3 Firefly to prove him mine is better :).

It seems like a TS808 without buffers from the pics I've seen on the internet, but who knows.

Here's the demo btw (it's not extrictly a demo, more like a song using it). If you are looking for someone to demo your pedals, he is the man:

I'm preparing my application for several master programmes and some of them ask for a recommendation letter.
My master thesis' tutor doesn't write english so I offered myself to translate his letter.
I've tried to do it as faithfully to his words as possible ussing similar expressions but I may have comitted some mistakes (it's not that easy to translate from spanish to english when using formal expressions).

Maybe some of you whose mother thongue is english could have experience with these kind of letters and help me improve it (in form, not in content).

Thanks in advance!!
Here it goes (I get red as a tomato every time I read it but I suppose that's a good thing with a recommendation letter):

Quote
To whom it may concern,
By means of this letter, I would like to express my recommendation for D. Adán Luis Benito Temprano as part of his application to the [master's name] programme, offered by [Name of University].

Both as Adán's  instructor in Communications-Electronics and Radiofrecuency Technologies courses, as well as a tutor for his final Research Project "Outphasing Transmitter with Parallel Class E Amplifiers",  I only have positive things to say about him as a student.  Adán has always proved to be an independent and capable student, displaying exceptional skills and knowledge in the RF field as well as in Signal Processing and many others. He was one of the most outstanding students in the aforementioned courses, displaying  very active participation and thus getting high academic results. Furthermore, as a fruit of the work developed during his Research Project, state of the art results have been achieved. These results will allow us, not only to offer a competitive solution useful for related industry, but also lead to a publication in a prestigious journal.

Moreover, my references regarding the professional and personal atmosphere couldn't be better.  Adán takes his work very seriously and has shown a remarkable ability to strive toward the highest level performance. He is also a creative thinker and can provide innovative ideas and solutions to the problems that may appear during lab and research tasks.  During the development of such tasks, Adán has made himself very valuable in small-group interaction with his peers. The friendly and supportive attitude he displayed throughout the development of this activities makes him a good candidate for the inclusion in a working team.

In light of the foregoing,  it is a pleasure for me to recommend him to the mentioned master and to your distinguished institution.
