Tech Help - Projects Page / Capacitor voltage
April 08, 2012, 08:40:29 PM
I am getting ready to build a couple cupcakes and the build doc says to use 25V caps. All my green film caps are from Futurlec grab bags which don't list the voltage. Is there a way to tell the voltage?

Thanks

Futurelec, Smallbear, Mouser and Ebay here - oh, can't forget the forums  ;D

Smallbear has been great for me as a hobbyist. When I ventured off to Mouser, like other I ended up with some caps that won't fit in a pedal enlcosure, much less the board I bought them for  ???

SB is definitely not the speediest or the lowest cost, but the selection is great and geared for pedal builders, so the ordering takes much less time.

OP - do yourself a favor and buy a resistor pack on ebay if you plan on building more pedals. I got 20-30 values in good supply labeled and ready to use. I did the same with other part groups from futurelec. The futurelec caps weren't marked, but it is easy to cross-reference. A few plano boxes and some masking tape and you can get pretty organized in an afternoon.

Open Discussion / Re: Why did you start to build?

Similar to TNB I found BYOC through Gilmourish. I started with a few commercial pedal mods via ebay and Monte Allums then graduated to BYOC and finally buying PCB's from Bean and others.

I have been doing basic repairs and hacks on electronics for a long time, but building pedals is especially rewarding because each time I fire a new one up for the first time (kinda like something else...) it is extremely rewarding and inspires me to play more.

Noooo  :-[ I missed the Sunking. In the process of moving and haven't checked the forum from last week when it said they would be in stock on 5/31.

Any chance someone wants to sell me one?

Really like the site and build docs - only things I would add are:

*Email list for new product updates - I am not a twitterer
*Spreadsheets with parts boms. The build docs are great, but I would like and easy way to cut/paste the build details into a spreadsheet for ordering.

Oh and a pedal that makes me play like Gilmour :)

Any update on this one? I did not see anything in the release schedule. I am looking to order a few pcbs at once and would like one of these as well.

Thanks

Open Discussion / Re: The wives

My wife is in the "humors me" category some of the other folks mentioned. I pretend to care about her ramblings on history for a few minutes and she pretends to care about my geeking out for tone. We are both supportive of each other's passions, but it does not mean we need to share them all.

The trick I have learned over the years is to ensure it is not a competition as someone else mentioned. If I spend all my time with my hobbies and none with the wifey things will not go well. Wives need to know they are #1.

My wife likes to paint (and I don't). Recently, I got her to start swirling pedals for me. I gave her dragonfly's tutorial and some guidance on what I wanted. Here is my BSIABII. I have three other pedals she has painted that all look great, but need to be clearcoated this weekend. Next up is a magic mushroom I am going to provide zero input on and let her do whatever she wants rather than a swirly - should be interesting.
