Title: The pedal movIe
Post by: jimilee on May 05, 2021, 09:31:27 PM
Did anyone watch it, what did you think? There seem to be rumors and conflicting stories on how fuzz and distortion were created. I tend to believe the movie, Josh seems to be a stand up guy and pedal collector and aficionado. Thoughts?

I haven't seen it yet but I'd like to. I don't want to have a payment method linked to my google account so I gotta find a way to get a google play gift card first

I watched it last night, I thought it was good. Definitely worth watching and cool to see some vintage effects, I loved watching Steve Vai with that whammy pedal. I thought the end was kinda weird, maybe I am wrong but it seemed out place.

I thought so too. I feel like the trailers that they've been putting out were a bit misleading. It didn't quite cover female builders as much as we were lead to believe. As a matter of fact, I think there was more of that in the trailers than the movie, but definitely a good watch.

so ... if you pirate it, did you make a clone of the pedal movie?

I watched it last night and enjoyed myself.  I think it got worse as it went along.  During the history part, we get a pretty clean narration of the stories behind some famous pedals.  The origin stories and the makers got some good time and there were enough scenes to keep me interested.  At the end it got a little public relations-focused.  I agree with Jimilee that they missed a great opportunity to showcase new builders who aren't goofy white guys.  Who do you think came off well?  I liked the JHS dude, Wampler and Fran.

Is there a link of any sort? IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes?

The subject title makes me think of a youtube vid I saw, and the comment that as far as pedals go, guitarists only care about the resale value.

I'm going to try to watch it this weekend. Last weekend I watched the new Dave Grohl doc What Drives Us and really enjoyed that.

This seems to be the official link for it, and you can get to the Google or iTunes versions from there:

Ok I'm about half way through it. There's a LOT of footage that's been on reverb's YouTube channel over the past 2 years or so

I want to, but haven't had a chance yet. Two and a half hours is a big commitment... and it makes it a harder sell to the wife. Hopefully get to watch it soon.

Been following this one and another called "Sisters with Transistors" about women synth pioneers on Instagram for a while. Pretty excited to watch both.

I didn't realize they were charging money for it and then thought..."oh wait...it's Reverb..."

Hoping to get to it but being able to commandeer 2.5 hours is a tall order lately.

I'd say the lesser known guitar player that was looking for a pedal and couldn't find it.

Same thing I thought. I'll get around to it at some point.

I didn't watch it all at once. It's kind of broken up into segments, which makes it easier to leave and come back. I didn't Ming paying 9.99.

You mean Josh the JHS dude? Their entire pedal portfolio is a big collection of clones, see here (https://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18293&start=20#p265977). Also plenty of other small builders in there they ripped off.

Regarding the movie: the first 100 minutes that dealt with the history of pedals was a nice watch. I could have done without the rest of it which was a mix of the protagonists jerking themselves off  and self-adulation, only to squeeze in a justification for clones of other pedals as a legit business model in at the last second.

I don't care about his pedal line, you're right. He has a decent knowledge of pedal history and an extensive pedal collection.  I watch his YouTube channel for the history segments. The Paul Gilbert show, that was alright too.

Yeah, I'm not going to run out and buy his pedals anytime soon, but he clearly does a lot of research about old pedals for his next product YouTube video.

Sorry, I try not to be too negative in post but that one was just too easy.

It's all good man. If we agreed on everything, the discussion wouldn't get very far.

Just supposed to be a lighthearted joke. Just going for the cheap laugh. I'm to old to worry to much about that stuff, more important things in the world.

so I did see the movie and it took me watching it in chunks to finish it ... it wasn't very interesting and once they got to the boutique era the whole thing felt aimless

I don't say that to be mean but I've been at the diy thing a while, not as long as most here but certainly long enough to know a good deal of these stories through other sources both written and in youtube interviews etc. I understand the exclusion of Fuller but I feel that exclusion hurt the film ... there was clearly all this lead-in to a section of the movie that was just missing.

I've watched it a couple times now, it seemed weird that after buying the Reverb promoted pedals that we weren't given any earlier access than normal, and that there was a time limit to watch it. Nevertheless, i made the time to watch it or have it on in the background while i worked at the bench.

As a general statement, I enjoy learning about the history of pedals and the general 'what goes on' about effects. I suppose if I didn't, I wouldn't be here :)  I do like the stories of how we got to where we are, but admit that after the movie's history lesson, the story was getting hard to follow. It would jump from cool interesting history to something else, then back in for a second. I feel like it wasn't the best decision to throw things in towards the end without giving them more time/details and context.

Its like the comedic presentation with a time limit; the presenter realizes they only have a couple minutes left so they speed through a bunch of slides just for the sake of saying they "completed" the presentation.

In the end, I thought it was something cool to watch. I hope more film makers (hopefully outside the scope of Reverb) produce more content like this.

I caught the movie too, and it's definitely sparking some interesting discussions. Josh does come across as genuine, especially with his pedal passion shining through. It's fascinating how different stories and rumors can swirl around the creation of fuzz and distortion. Reminds me of this time I stumbled upon a documentary about guitar effects pedals. The behind-the-scenes insights were eye-opening, showing just how much goes into crafting those sounds. By the way, have you checked out any new movies in theaters now (https://wealthofgeeks.com/movies-out-now/)? They're always a fun way to dive into new stories and spark fresh conversations.
