Build Reports / CAYA Chorus (Small Clone)
July 13, 2014, 10:52:40 AM
Small Clone using my PCB design. Added the obligatory mods: depth pot and rate led.

Everything just fits in this CamdenBoss enclosure. Had to use Lumberg style sockets. Both jacks and DC. Otherwise I'd have to go up to an 125B enclosure.

I will probably change the knobs. I'm waiting for an order to arrive then I'll compare them to these.

I was supposed to have used a Fresnel for the bypass LED but I was overzealous with my drilling  :(

I used a clear adhesive label, instead of decal paper, for the first time. It's easier to work with than decal but you only have one chance to lay it on the enclosure! If you get your alignment wrong you'll have to rip it off, clean the glue off and start again with a new label.

I sprayed it with a few coats of Rust-Oleum Polyurethane Finish and left it to dry under the British sun (it only appears a few times a year so I had to be quick!!!)

This now has a permanent spot on my pedal board  :)

Open Discussion / Voodoo Lab PP2+ Stopped working

Wouldn't power up this morning :( Luckily it's still under warranty (just) so I'm not going to fiddle with the insides! Anyone else had problems with these suddenly not working?

Build Reports / Caballo Loco (Crazy Horse)
April 13, 2014, 10:17:23 AM
This is my first ever horizontal pedal build! It's a PCB by Poodle's Pedal Parts of the Durham Electronics Crazy Horse.

I'm surprised that everything fitted in there especially as I hand drilled all the holes! Poodle does some nice PCB's. He's the UK's version of Madbean  :)

This pedal is quite versatile although I haven't fully experimented with it. I'm a big Neil Young fan and you can get that sound with this. Even with a Telecaster!

I will probably change the knobs as they are too tall and being so close to the footswitch it's tricky to get your foot bang on the switch. I'm using a CamdenBoss enclosure (similar to what's used in EHX pedals) and this has become my favourite type.

Build Reports / Sharkfin

Had a bit of an accident with the decal on this one! I used a decal from a different supplier and it was crap  :(

The laser printer doesn't seem to like the colour red either!

Built this one without really knowing much about this effect! Been wanting to build something a little bit unusual and this certainly is.

The calibration process for the sample and hold is more or less done by ear. You can get several different sounds depending on how you set the trimmers. You can even get it to sound like a drum machine!

Still fiddling with it and I'm sure I'll find a musical use for the sample and hold.

Just discovered this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibu4x3ae87M&feature=youtu.be

Makes for interesting viewing for us pedal freaks  :)

Symptoms:

Dry signal passes through but there is no delay. When power is toggled on and off the delay kicks in. Effect works as it should. When switched off and on after a few minutes, effect still works. When left for longer there is no delay.

Over the last couple of days the toggling of the power no longer makes the delay work (the dry signal still passes through). In order for it to work again I have to go through the calibration process again. i.e removing IC4, turning Bias 1 trimmer etc

The same issue happens with two different  power supplies and batteries. Both inside and outside of the enclosure.

I'm running this at 9V and using: v3205, SA571, MN3102.

Audio probe works up to pin 7 of IC3. No output from pins 3 and 4. Dry signal passes through IC1.

Here are some IC voltages:

            IC3                        IC4                        IC5                       IC2

   1  0.00   8  7.60      1  0.00   8  7.60      1  8.14   8  3.87      1  1.10   16  0.84
   2  4.05   7  4.10      2  4.05   7  4.11      2  4.05   7  4.25      2  1.82   15  1.82
   3  3.56   6  4.05      3  3.62   6  4.05      3  0.00   6  4.09      3  1.82   14  1.82
   4  3.58   5  8.14      4  3.67   5  8.14      4  4.05   5  7.60      4  0.00   13  9.00
                                                                                        5  1.82   12  1.82
                                                                                        6  1.81   11  4.81
                                                                                        7  3.05   10  4.81
                                                                                        8  1.82   09  1.82

Haven't had the time to take transistor voltages yet. Will be busy this week so it might take a few days.

I'll carry on trouble shooting this one as soon as I can because I really do like this delay!

General Questions / Power Supplies
July 07, 2013, 10:19:34 PM
What type and brand of power supplies is everyone using? There certainly seems to be some favourites out there. Prices can vary enormously and the best psu might be beyond most peoples budgets.

What would be ideal is a psu that works on everything. i.e boosters, fuzzes, positive ground effects, modulation effetcs, delays etc. without noise or oscillation. (I know 'you pays you money....')!

I have had issues with this cheap pedal bank psu that I bough recently:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/larryhamster/july18012.jpg

It works fine with most fuzzes, distortions, delays (Aquaboy and multiplex) but creates terrible noise with the Stage Fright and Sharkfin that I'm 'rocking' right now. I also had a problem powering my Harbinger One with an 18V psu that I bought. I solved the problem by buying a Dunlop one. These psu's are switch mode types which seem to play havoc with some lfo based effects.

It's funny how the humble 9V battery still functions better than these 'fancy' power sources! I sometimes use batteries to test my builds before boxing.

What are you guys using on your Stage Fright and Sharkfin (or similar) builds?

Does this mean that I will end up using several psu's for different effects? Or shall I just splash-out on a very expensive power brick?

Some veros to keep me going (withdrawal symptoms!) whilst I complete my Stage Fright, Sharkfin, Nautilus and R2G2.

The Lunar Module sounds fantastic! This is my favourite fuzz at the moment.

The wiring is not the neatest but the sound of this thing makes up for it  :)

I used as many bits as I had lying around thus the carbon comps!

Next one is a '73 Big Muff Ram's Head. Smooth, creamy sustaining lead sound. Lovely sound  :)

Had a mishap with the decal and the pi symbol didn't come out the same as the pdf and I forgot to move the in and out labels :( Again the sound of this makes up for it!

It must be intimidating being a box cap surrounded by all those greenies  :)

There's also an 3n9 Tin Film Cap for that 'mojo' sound  ;)

Build Reports / Harbinger One
June 21, 2013, 01:16:06 PM
Finally finished this but I'm still waiting for the Dunlop psu I ordered on-line. The original psu I ordered caused terrible noise/oscillation. Probably because its a switch mode type and not meant for this type of effect. It worked perfectly well with two 9V batteries connected in series :) So I can deduce that there is nothing wrong with the build! (Fingers crossed!)

Pics are not too good as my Samsung Galaxy that I normally use is sick and being repaired :(

Its hard to find the right 'shield' to cover the bulb and ldr's but i found this San Pellegrino cap perfect. I just had to cut the bottom part and sand it down to the correct height. I used a metallic silver Sharpie to 'paint' the inside. I then lined the bottom with blu-tack and stuck it on the board. Seems to work!

This is another great project from Madbean :)

Trying to decide what power supply to use.

Build docs mention that "100mA is sufficient to operate the Harbinger" with a 9V PSU. Is this the minimum requirement?

Reason I'm asking is that my pedal power bank only supplies 75mA per output. These aren't isolated so I can't combine them to get 18V.

Trying to avoid spending more money on a new power supply!

Pedal Parts Emporium's 'Fat Furry Freak' PCB. AKA: Woolly Mammoth Fuzz.

Double Flush using home made vactrol. Used blu-tack to fill the ends!

Ran-out of power sockets :(

After Life compressor. The black on the letters didn't come out too well. Cheap laser printer :(

Cherry Bomb. Still in need of knobs! This will be the first and last time I try and sand aluminium!

Played around with the transistors but you can never quite get rid of that fizz when the note decays. I think its part of this circuits character. I used a couple of BC109's for Q1 and Q2 and NOS 2N3565 for Q3. You can probably go mad with all the different combinations of transistors you can use but use your ears and go with what sounds best for you.

Build Reports / v3205 Aquaboy Deluxe
May 01, 2013, 11:40:36 PM
Partial build report. Rockin' before boxin'! Worked first time! Just waiting for a matt white 1590bb box to put this in. Decal art already done.

Used: v3205, SA571 and MN3102. The multi-turn trimmers are the only ones I could find in the correct values. You have to turn them a million times before they do anything! They don't fit comfortably as you can see but the important thing is that they work.

Using recommended (socketed) resistors. Have not had enough time to test other values but these seem to work fine. The modulation works fine with these values. You can go from standard modulation to pretty wild when set to square wave.

Using the much maligned v3205 but it works very well in this circuit. With minimal tweaking I can barely hear any distortion or clock noise. You'll always get some noise with this type of circuit but that is expected. Its part of its character. You get some lovely analogue delay out of this!

When I have more time I'll tweak it to its optimal 'settings' and box it up :)

This is a great project and many thanks goes to Madbean for the great design and all the testing and tweaking!
