I'm looking at building a Wah pedal some time soon, and I'm interested in opinions about the pot to use.

Is it worth getting the Dunlop Hot Potz II, or will I not really notice a difference between that and something cheaper?

There are cheaper 'generic' ones, but I'm not sure if they are just a normal linear pot with a gear stuck on, it is hard to tell.

I certainly noticed the difference between a Hotpotz II and a Mccon-o-pot (https://mcconowah.com/mcconopot-potentiometer). The sweep is better than the standard Dunlop pot, and they are relatively cheap. I picked one up when I built a Weener Wah last year and it's been pretty excellent.

I would avoid the cheaper alternatives, as quality is really important with Wah pots. They take a lot of abuse!

I recently bult up two different wahs for friends. As for the pots, like anything you never know if you are just paying for the dunlop name on it.  I bought one of these for 15 euros http://uk-electronic.de/onlineshop/index.php?cPath=154 and it is definately good quality but who knows how long until it gets scratchy.  But I've also heard of dunlop pots showing up scratchy out of the box.

Another important choice will be what taper.  Linear or Icar.  I used one of each in the wahs and they definately both have a different sweep.  I personally prefer the icar but that is just me.

My vote is for Joe Gagan's pot or the Mccon-o-pot. I prefer the taper of Joe's pot but the smoothness of the sealed Mccon-o-pot.

Thanks, that gives me a few things to look into.  Now to see if I can get any of these to Australia without it costing me $50 shipping.  :-\
