Submini pinout

How do you determine the pinout for a submini tube when all the wires are equidistant from one another? Is there a simple breadboard circuit I could build or do I have to peer into the glass and try to make sense of the various connections?

Theres a little line on the bottom indicating pin 1 and 8 usually. Its quite hard to see between the wires

Measure with the multimeter which two pins are the heater.

Sadly, these particular tubes do not have any kind of marking that I am able to see (even with a magnifying glass).

Could you please elaborate? I assume you mean I should apply power to one of the wires and check voltage on another? If so, how should I determine which wire to apply voltage? Also, is there a simple breadboard circuit I could use to do this?

I'm hoping someone could help design a test circuit for 6N17B tubes like the one Brian did for 6111 tubes... http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=28539.0

With your multimeter in diode/continuity check mode test equally spaced/opposite pins until you hear the beep. After you found the filament pins you just need to know the correct pin order (datasheet).

The pins are not symmetric, as the 6111, but follow a circular order. This way you can rotate the tube 180 degrees and the pins are still in the same position. 

You can use the same circuit used by Brian, just use the correct pin order and reduce the resistor in series with the filament. The 6111 has a 300mA filament, while the 6N17B requires 400mA.
