Build Reports / 4 in 1! my most ambitious project yet.
November 23, 2012, 01:50:33 PM
Problem: I play guitar in church as well as in a rock band and I was taking up too much space in church with my large pedal board.
Solution: Build the 4 circuit's I use in church into a single enclosure.

Here goes:
drilled and sanded.

The finished guts: It's a Klone into a double flush tremolo, into a P90 phaser (with added depth control) into a sea urchin. An awesome collection of circuits. I added in a loop (out and then back in) between the Klone and the modulation effects so that if i need to I can add extra drive/crunch etc. This is simply jumper-ed if i'm using it stand alone.

and finished:

The LEDs are ultra violet purple but for some reason they photograph red.

My new homemade mini pedal board:

And all ready to go:

I have a wah into the 4 in 1 and then a boneyard into a TS808 in the loop and then back into the big box for the mod and delay. A whole gigready gig rig on a board less than 2 A4 pieces of paper in size! Before someone notices and comments I know there are no patch cables attached yet in the last pic, I know! I just dropped everything on there quickly for the photo. I reckon this project has taken me over 24 hours! (mostly due to a non working sea urchin circuit that would work occasionally when it wanted to. In the end I gutted another sea urchin from it's small enclosure and dropped in it here. Problem solved!)

Very satisfied with this build :-D

Hi. I intend to make a multi fx with 4 circuits in it. I was thinking of using 1 dc jack and a strip of vero from the ground and +9v lugs so that I can power all 4 circuits with it. Will this be ok or will it need 4 separate dc jacks; one for each circuit?

Build Reports / Boneyard and tonepad's guv'nor
September 24, 2012, 09:55:10 PM
Boneyard:

Best sounding plexi clone by far but a bit of an ordeal to get ironed out. I had popping on the clean boost switch so i had to add a resistor in to the switch (after asking for help on this forum), also the high gain had the squeal problem so I had to build in a klon buffer between the switch and the PCB. (you can see it wrapped in masking tape to shield it  if you look carefully!) I LOVE this pedal. Best hard rock overdrive out of everything i've built but I was surprised by the issues with it as I built the previous version and didn't have any of these issues. Anyway, it was a good learning experience and I appreciate Brian's hard work o provide these great projects and all the extra help I got from everyone else around here  :)

And also here is a Guv'nor from tonepad (excellent etch from haberdasher)
I love the fact that this has a 3 band eq. This makes it way more versatile than many of the other overdrives out there. Great for classic rock and also does a pretty good scooped metal sound with the 3 band eq. I painted it using masking tape to give a van halen/racing stripe design. The LED (which is impossible to capture in a photo for some reason) is superbright PINK! It look's super 80s which is pretty much what i was after. I'll probably swap out the knobs for gold marshall style when i place my next parts order.

First up is a Rockbox boiling point clone on vero. Very very versatile overdrive, i'm liking it very much.

Also I managed to get a chicken salad on ebay for pretty cheap and it sounds great so I thought i'd rehouse it. It was a bit fiddly and I had to do a bit of research but i'm very pleased with how it turned out. I put the trim pot to the outside for various 'colouring' of the vibe sound. It has a bit of pop on engaging it so i'll need to add a PDR at some point.

from this:

To this:

(added later) and here is a gutshot for anyone wondering about the univibe insides after the rehouse:

in progress is the new boneyard, hipster and fatpants.

Tech Help - Projects Page / 2012 Boneyard advice needed
September 19, 2012, 09:31:58 PM
Hi all. I've built the previous design boneyard and i had no problems with squeal/oscillation . I've just built the 2012 version and i'm getting the squeal on the high gain channel. I've tried it after a klon clone I have and the squeal goes so i'll build a klon buffer into the circuit as described by others already. That should sort it.

The thing i'd like advice about is the clean boost. I built it onto the 2nd 3pdt switch as per the build doc but when i engage it there is a very audible pop. Is there any way i can get rid of this? if i need a PDR to get rid of it where do i fit it? (I already have a 2.2M installed on the actual PCB as per the doc.)

Did anyone else experience this? Any advice as to how to get rid of the pop will be greatly appreciated.

Not a madbean build this time but fun none the less! A SHO boost on vero. I made the Led part of buzz's rocket suit!

I've just finished the boneyard and have an issue with the volume pot. All other pots and the entire effect works properly.

The volume pot seems to go from nothing then jumps to loud (more than unity) in the first 2% of travel and then for the last 98% of travel it hardly seems to adjust at all. maybe it gets a little louder. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be like this. How is everyone elses? can you go smoothly from no volume all the way up to max? I've used the 5KA as suggested in the build doc. This is the previous boneyard with the 3 footswitches.

Any suggestions?!

Another Yellow Shark! I love this circuit. I built this one to pay homage to the fine single malt whiskies that scotland kindly produces for us to enjoy! Like the whiskies, the circuit is very complex yet articulate with zingy harmonic overtones and just a hint of peaty smokiness  ;) ;D
I used an orangey red Led in this. The picture doesn't capture it well but it's a very distinct colour and almost looks like a candle flame when lit.

(forgot the gutshot. Will take one and add it later if I get a chance.)

There is no wiring diagram on this build doc. As far as I know most fuzz faces are centre positive instead of centre negative. Which is this??

I've never built a centre positive effect and I don't want to make a mistake. Would I need to wire it differently? (perhaps swap the 2 dc wires the other way?)

Is there any reason why there are 2 seperate ground points on the pcb?

Thank you for any advice offered.

Build Reports / Deep blue delay and plexi-drive
April 17, 2012, 09:01:38 PM
First we have a sea urchin. Sounds great.

Next up, a wampler plexi-drive. Sounds awesome. Only my second vero build. Wouldn't work initially. I debugged this for over an hour and then ordered some more transistors to check a different set. Turns out i'd missed a resistor off the layout!!!! What an utter moron!
Sounds great. This is quite understated for me without any fancy artwork but i love the look and the brushed aluminium knobs look so classy.  :)

Build Reports / True grit (Boomstick)
March 30, 2012, 12:37:51 PM
Boomstick: Loved the film 'true grit' by the coen brothers so wanted to pay homage. Note the carefully relic-ed enclosure! (thanks again to brian for all his hard work and generosity in letting us etch these and for Haberdasher for a brilliant friendly service and excellently etched pcbs)

New neater testing rig (no more croc clips and long wires)

Neutrino: standard build. simples.

Glitterrattii: Great sounding. TONS of volume available!

Build Reports / 2nd Spitfire (Uproar)
March 30, 2012, 12:26:18 PM
2nd uproar i've built. Keep the previous design, taking time to rivet the sides,  and added an awesome bullet casing for the proper spitfire effect! Check out how the diodes glow in this thing!!!! Awesome.

Im building the glitterati but I forgot to order a 1N4005 diode. I have a 1N4001 spare. What difference would it make if I used this instead?

As per the title really. I'm building a multi effect box and i'd like to have a switch so i can change the order of the 2 drive pedals in the same enclosure. (ie boost into drive switchable to, drive into boost)

Any wiring diagrams available for such a job?

Many thanks.

Hi. I've posted a question here about the mods that somebody posted a while back. Can anyone offer me the advice I need so I can get this built with the mods.

http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=2485.0

Sorry to start a new thread but I feared my plea for help would be missed in the mods folder.

First up we have the 'tap tremolo' from musicpcb. Very versatile and great fun to build.

and due to many requests i'm finally including gutshots of these builds!

Next up we have the brilliant MoRC modified ross compressor. I didn't get on so well with this board. The solder just seemed to rebel against flowing onto the pcb. Its was tricky to work with but it did fire up first time so no worries. It's around my 20th build so I didn't do anything different and by comparison the neutrino I populated today from haberdasher was a pleasure to solder on. Anyway, it is indeed a great sounding compressor and i'd recommend it to anyone needing some squish or sustain.

I was pretty pleased with how the artwork came out on these. Here is my original artwork for the compressor!

I thought it was amusing but decided against it and went for something a little more subtle!

I have a whole batch of madbean projects on the go too so it'll be back them next.
Having tried a couple of other distributers I must say that nothing is comparible with madbean when it comes to quality of pcbs, value for money, great pdf diagrams with clear labelling, and the bunch of helpful people around here.

Hi everyone,

I've built around 15 pedals now and I feel confident that I generally know what i'm doing but i'd like to challenge myself and build a 4 pedal multi fx. (much like the one Juansolo showed in the build reports recently)

The idea is to have a smaller board that i could just use for in church when i dont need my whole rig. I planned on a yellow shark into an egodriver into an ea tremolo into into a sea urchin. I can easily build these individually and drilling the enclosure is no problem but i have a few questions about wiring.

1. Are there any decent clear wiring diagrams for linking multiple effects into one enclosure? I had a quick look around but nothing seems super clear like brians diagrams are!

2. could i power all these from one dc input and how would i go about it?
(I wondered if i could build an extention of the dc jack on vero so i'd link the 9v power section of the dc to the vero and then go from that vero track to power the 4 individual pcbs, otherwise i'd have to fit 4 wires coming off the tiny dc jack. hope that makes sense. would this work or not?)

3. how do i need to wire the leds so that they are all the same brightness when they are switched on? would i need to link each led with its own resistor to the above mention vero dc jack extension?

Any advice offered here would be greatly received. Many Thanks.

SERENDIPITY: Built this for my bandmate. He plays through a Marshall class 5 and loved my serendipity so I built him one to compliment his amp both visually and tonally!

CUPCAKE: Nice subtle effect. I put the trimpot to the outside for easy adjustment.

GRUNTBOX: I won this in the Christmas PIF. Thanks so much brian. I built it to violet rams head spec. Tight fit in this enclosure.

Sorry I haven't got any gutshots at the moment. I may add them to the thread later if I can be bothered to open them up and photograph them. Nothing much to see though, just my usual trademark spaghetti style!

Build Reports / CHUN LI Clean boost (SHO)
January 13, 2012, 10:34:25 PM
Just finished this tonight. A SHO on vero. Really pleased with how the artwork turned out after I adjusted all the settings to super high res on my printer. I loved the street fighter games back in the day so thought i'd pay homage! I'd have prefered to use a blue led and white knob but I didn't have any left. might swap them out in the future.
