I've owned one and it was a great little amp.  Not loud enough to gig with in my experience, but that depends on how loud you need it to be.  It has a great tone for any hard rock type stuff, but that's the kind of stuff you may need a louder amp for if you're gonna play live with it.  The dual terror or the th30 are both really good larger versions of the same sort of thing. Both can be attenuated down to 7 watts for bedroom levels also.  Overall, the tiny terror is a pretty versatile amp and works well for recording.  It responds pretty well to pedals and if youre feeling adventurous, mercury magnetics has transformer upgrade kits for it that will make it sound a hundred times better (way more headroom and dynamics). I got an upgrade kit for my vox ac4 and it has turned into my go to recording amp for just about everything.

+1 on the tonebender suggestion, or pretty much any ge fuzz.  Maybe a superbee.  Yeah.  Superbee.  I would breadboard a few ge fuzzes until you hear something you can't live without. 

If you're coming to Memphis, you should hit the big stuff lik sun records, stax, graceland, etc., and be sure to get your fill of the food.  If you like barbecue, be sure to hit The Rendezvous or Interstate BBQ.  If I were you, i would take the hwy 61 scenic route along the Mississippi River delta and plot out a tour of blues sites along the way.  There's alot of info online you can plan your route from.  I've done a few blues excursions from new orleans up to chicago that were really awesome.  If you are an elvis fan, or just a fan of weirdness, you should go to Graceland Too in holly springs, ms ( about half an hour south of memphis.).   It's basically a crazy guy who takes you on a tour of his house full of elvis stuff (most of it is junk).  Really interesting way to spend an hour and five bucks.  (you could also go through Tupelo, Elvis's birthplace)

I'd also have to say +1 for Austin, Tx even though it's a bit out of the way.  It's easily my favorite city (besides Memphis, of course).  Great music scene, great food, and i think I could spend ten days just at the Alamo Drafthouse.

I think the catalinbread pedal is the hyper pak.  Maybe.  I built one a long time ago and ended up giving it away.  Sounded good, but i didn't use it much.

Kids are great.  I have a 5 yr. old and a 6 mo. old and while i feel sometimes that i could get so much stuff done if everyone would leave me alone for a few hours, i'm glad they don't.  I remember back to the days before i had a wife and kids and i was a big time procrastinator.  I wouldn't get anything done until i had to.  Having kids has forced me to budget my time much better and be more eficcient with the one or two hours a day i get to myself.  Now I get more done in an hour than i did in a whole day when i was single.  Life is weird that way.  Sometimes the things we think are dwindling away are really only being cut down to what's truly important.

Yeah, you're not gonna get a dynamite  condenser in that price range, but either will get the job done.  You can occasionally find a rode nt5 pair for 250 on eBay.  That's a steal for those mics.  Also look for shure ksm32's used for around the same price (single).  I would get him the cheaper ones now and he can save up for the better stuff.  He'll be able to learn the difference between dynamic and condenser and what sounds best with what, and that's more important than how great the mic represents the highs, etc.
