... an envelope controlled overdrive/distortion?

I have a 'need' for a pedal that when played softly is clean but distorts the harder I play. I know a good overdrive pedal will naturally growl more the harder you dig in but I am after something a little more extreme that works like an envelope filter. i.e The distortion blooms and fades with the attack. Does that make sense?

Thanks in advance!

Tech Help - Projects Page / No sound from compresor
April 03, 2016, 07:36:07 PM
Hi all

I've just finished populating a Keely compressor board from Fuzzdog and all is not well. When hooked up to my test rig I am getting no sound whatsoever when the pedal is engaged. No ground hum, no intermittent signal no nothing. Bypass works fine.

I have used an audio probe to follow the signal up to IC1 but not being the greatest at reading schematics I have got a bit stuck.  Schem below:

I am getting signal at the IC at pins 2 and 3 but nowhere else. Could anyone tell me if this is correct?

Voltages as follows:

EDIT: I made a mistake in reading the voltages . Please se my next post for the correct readings

1 - 53.5
2 - 4.82
3 - 4.83
4 - 0.00
5 - 8.71
6 - 9.44
7 - 7.30
8 - 56.2

Any advice on what might be the issue or on how I can proceed with the audio probe would be enormously appreciated.

Thanks

... a channel/line switcher that is controlled by an expression pedal?

I currently use a simple send/return loop pedal to turn on a bunch of effects at the same time. Would it be possible to do this with an expression pedal as follows:

Heel position: Pedals out of loop audible. Pedals in loop not audible
Half way position: Pedals out of loop audible. Pedals in loop audible
Toe position: Pedals out of loop not audible. Pedals in loop audible

If that doesn't make sense I'm after something that will mix from 100% dry signal to 100% wet sgnal with a 50/50 split at the half way point on the treadle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Open Discussion / Recommend me a 1590a fuzz build
February 22, 2016, 11:02:36 AM
Hey all

I'm looking to fill a small hole on my board with a fuzz. Can anyone recommend a fuzz project that will fit a 1950a enclosure? I've got the Madbean Hipster on my shortlist but wondered if you guys knew of any others that I could have a look at?

Thanks in advance!

Hey all

Just finished boxing up this beast. It's a Klon into a Crunchbox into a Fat Fuzz Factory. All boards from Fuzzdog in the UK (including the lovely Lumen boards from Grindcustoms). I cant recommend Fuzzdog enough to other UK builders.

I wanted a multi dirt pedal that I can use with my practice amp so I don't have to wheel my main board out every time I want to play at home.

The Klon board has a small switch that lets you switch between buffered bypass and TBP. I tried both and found the buffer had a massive effect on the Fuzz Factory. I didn't like how it affected the sound of the fuzz so went with TBP in the end.

Hey all

Here's my build of the Twin Peaks trem. First of all hats of to Drolo for an excellent PCB, build doc and all the help he has given me.

I previously built the Music PCB tap tempo tremolo but could never get rid of the ticking. Whilst there is some ticking in this build its only on the deepest, harshest settings on a couple of the wave shapes so I'm happy. It's gone straight on my board.

It nails the How Soon is Now sound too. Will try and record a demo at some point.

Really like the bass/treble mode too. You can get almost a vibrato or rotating speaker sound put of it. Really musical.

Guts (if I have too)

I really recommend giving this a go. Don't let the two board layout put you off. The build doc really does a good job of explaining how to solder everything together and you can obviously make things easier on yourself by using board mounted pots. The PCB is a dream to solder too. Thanks David!

Hi all

My first finished build in a while. I borrowed a band mate's OCD and loved it so thought I'd build my own. It's built on a board from Fuzz Dog here in the UK. He makes great boards and is a god send to us building in the UK.

I did an A/B test with the original and whilst there is some difference with the response from the pots the sound is spot on.

And the guts. Never pretty.

Tech Help - Projects Page / 1n4742 for Klon
March 26, 2015, 11:58:56 AM
Hey gang

I'm building my first Klone and the place where I get my components from deosn't stock the 1n4742 diode. Can any tell me if these 1n4742a I found on ebay will do the trick? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MULTICOMP-1N4742A-DIODE-ZENER-12V-1W-Price-For-5-/171118812964?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27d779df24

If it helps for the other diodes and IC's I'm using:
1N34A x2
1N4001 x2
TC1044SCPA x1
TL072CP x2

Thanks!

Open Discussion / New Pickups. Which is which???
March 08, 2015, 01:18:41 PM
Hey All

A quick non-pedal related question for you lovely people.

I've just bought a new set of 3 Fender Tex Mex pickups as below:

How on earth are you supposed to tell which pickup is bridge, middle or neck? I'm bamboozled.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hey all

I've been getting into the new Sleater Kinney Track Bury Out Friends and wondered if anyone could identify the effect/s used on the guitar in the intro. I just can't put my finger on the sound.

Here's a video:

Thanks guys!

Open Discussion / Volume Meter Build
February 26, 2015, 07:13:56 AM
Hi all

I've been toying with the idea of installing some kind of volume meter into my pedal board and just wondered if this was even possible?

I use several drive and boost pedals each with slightly different volumes and I'd like some kind of visual aid to tell me what the levels are. It doesn't need to be massively accurate just basically tell me is pedal X louder than pedal Y.

Something like this would be perfect but probably with a few more LEDs

Is anyone aware of a project that might fit the bill?

Thanks as always.

Hey all

Just wondering if someone could help me out a little?

You know that glassy/chimey/quacky (delete as appropriate) tone you can only get from a Strat? Is there any way to get it from my Tele?

I have an American Deluxe Telecaster and whilst I love it to bits I'd really like to know if there's anything I can do to squeeze that Start sound out of it? I'm guessing the tone in question comes from a combination the Strat's pickups and 5 way selector. Is it possible to get that sound (with a little tinkering) from a 2 pickup Tele?

Of course I can save up for a couple of years and buy a nice Strat but I was wondering if there may be a way to mod my Tele's selector switch to get the pickup combination necessary for the tone?

I've done a bit of Googling but most results returned are on how to make a Strat sound like a Tele, not a great deal on the reverse!

All help greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Open Discussion / Cool guitar sound from new band
January 16, 2015, 11:02:49 AM
Hey all

I've been getting into a new UK based band called Slaves recently. They're a two piece, singer/drumer and guitarist. Thought I'd share a video here as the guitar player has a very unusual guitar sound that I thought you might like/hate (beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that). The video is a little sweary towards the end so make sure sensetive ears are not around before playing.

Here's a photo of his board if anyone is interested.

Top Row L-R: EHX Nano Holy Grail, EHX, Nano Clone, Line 6 DL-4, Big Ear Loaf, Boss TU-2
Bottom ROw L-R: Boss Compressin Sustainer CS-3, Morley ABY Selector, EHX Micro Synth, EHX Micro Pog, ZVEX Mastotron

Open Discussion / Klon 1950a Layout?
January 09, 2015, 10:50:40 AM
Hey all

Just wondering if a 1950a layout for the Klon Centaur exists? I've found an extinct group buy thread but I was hoping for an available project.

Thanks in advance

Tech Help - Projects Page / King of Tone Diode Question
January 05, 2015, 04:52:56 PM
Hi all

I'm looking at builidng one of Rullywow's Queen of Bone KoT boards and had a question about the diodes.

The build doc says I can swap out the hard to find diodes used in the original circuit and replace them with 1N914, 1N4148, red LED or BAT41 diodes. My question is do both sets of diodes (D1-6 and D7-12) have to be different types or can I just use say 1N914s for all of them?

Thanks

Build Reports / Mosquete - Musket Big Muff
January 04, 2015, 02:45:41 PM
Hey all

Here's my latest. It's a Blackout Effectors Musket built on Hexjibber's Muff Gun board. Massive thank to Graham for help with the build.

After playing with it for a while I think it's become my favourite dirt pedal. It covers everything from overdrive, distortion and of course fuzz. It doesn't do splattery FF type fuzz but it's got smooth, thick BMP sounds aplenty.

I really love the Musket's black and white  artwork so I used that as inspiration and did my own take on it.

Thanks to Graham's great layout I can hands down say this is the neatest build I've finished. The first gut shot I'm not embarrassed to post.

If you're into fuzz then I definitely recommend giving this circuit a go.

Cheers.

Open Discussion / Loop Pedal Popping
December 31, 2014, 09:24:32 AM
Hi all

I've been toying with the idea of building a loop pedal to use with my ever growing array of effects. I'm just a bit worried about the pop you can sometimes get from using true bypass 3pdt wiring.

Are there any sure fire ways of eliminating this pop? I've tried adding resistors to the in/out jacks of some pedals I have that suffer with this problem but it never seems to help. Is there such a thing as a silent switch that will work as true bypass?

Apologies if this topic has been done to death.

Thanks

Hey all

Hope you all had a good Xmas/holiday season.

Just wondering if anyne knows of a reliable DBA Robot project. All I can find on the old Google is a schematic which doesn't include wiring for the rotary switch.

All help greatly appreciated!

Open Discussion / Wedge Enclosures
December 09, 2014, 09:22:01 AM
Hi All

Just wondering if anyone has any good sources for wedged shaped enclosures?

I've done some Googling and whenever people ask this question they generally get directed to www.pedalenclosures.com but this site now seems to be closed. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I live in the UK so sources based in Europe would be doubly helpful!

Thanks in advance.
