Build Reports / Flugelhorn and Plecostomus Fuzz
February 13, 2020, 05:03:51 PM
Here is my Flugelhorn Fuzz, this one was quite a fun and interesting build. As for the build it was really straight forward and sounds fantastic but when I started painting it I made a mistake and had excess paint come off the brush onto the top ruining the original painting. When I tried to clean off the paint I ended up taking of some of the powder coating as well. This pissed me off quite a bit and left a mess on the top, but did leave a rough surface. I figured this would be a great opportunity to try and use posco paint pens and draw something that would cover up the mess.

With the resurrection theme in mind I drew the zombie hand coming out of the ground and then needed something sizeable on the left side to cover up more blemish so I added a gravestone. Any guess whose name is written on the head stone?

It sounds fantastic and turned out great, my son loved it so much that he recommended I do something similar to the Plecostomus fuzz. Hence the zombie hand with the flower in his hand. It is another really versatile fuzz that does so much really well, really enjoy playing this one.

VFE Projects / VFE Switching Board V1 4.7uf link?
August 04, 2019, 12:54:26 PM
I am having a heck of a time finding this capacitor. Any one have a link for it?

I have electrolyics and the highest mlcc that would fit is 2.2 uf. Happens every build, just one part away from mild success.

Thanks for any help.

Open Discussion / Any Mesa Fillmore 50 users?
May 05, 2019, 11:47:45 PM
After about five years of the same amps I am looking to downsize and thinking about getting this amp. Any users out there or any one tried one?

The gear page post is over 100 pages i dont feel like sorting through the bickering to find a few posts of insight.

I really dig the clean channel being doubled and being built to be a pedal platform, any users?

My son asked for some juice, I promptly got it for him put my wife on speaker phone and set the phone down.  Little guy wanted to ask mom something and knocked my guitar over, headstock shot off like a rocket! what a great way to start my birthday.

Any one ever fix something like this? Should I take it to a luthier or diy it.

Been a busy week of building and painting, finished painting up a couple of fine dandies.

First up is the Aion Astra Fuzz, this is built to replicate the Analogman Astro Fuzz. It is a pretty wicked 60s style fuzz a ton of fun to play and has that strawberry alarm clock kinda feel to it, hence the dove and fun colors.

Next up is the very awesome Slow Loris, I am a sucker for a rat pedal and this thing just kicks so much ass. I wanted that cracked out, tin foil hat look and some what achieved it.

Next up is the two in one super overdrive combo of the Schu-tone Beef and Lone Wolf aka a Tubescreamer and a Nobels ODR-S aka a Paisley Deluxe. This thing cooks and I have recently come around to the TS circuit and was able to get some of those classic tones. I added a PedalPCB.com order switcher switch to add to the flexibility.

I have not decided if I want to actually label anything or just keep it clean. Please someone choose for me.

And finally here is my new puppy we pick up in a week. This is Sam Zap Wolf, my son got to name him.

Open Discussion / Build docs coming soon…
January 26, 2019, 04:22:23 PM

After being awake for 24 hours and having a horrible night at work I thought of this and laughed my ass off, it's the little things.

File this under jokes only pedal builders would understand.

On a serious note thank you to all of the pcb suppliers that keep my wallet in a constant state of emptiness.

Open Discussion / 2018 by the numbers, plans for 2019.
January 04, 2019, 04:20:01 PM
Looking back on 2018 has been fun, 12 years of building my own gear and this is the first year I actually documented my progress.

The numbers;

56 pedals built
45 left to build
23 painted
16 old builds painted
68 left to paint
6 ideas for said pedals to paint.....
15 pedals involved in demos
3 more involved in current demo, should be out before January 15th.
120 posts on this forum
1 new soldering iron (Hakko FX888D)
First Breadboard setup from PedalPCB.com
Jazzmaster built
One promise to my wife that it is the last guitar.
Started an instagram account, not a fan of social media but trying.
Two shelves built to house pedals with more coming.

I made a New Years resolution for 2018 that was to play and write more, to try and be more active on this forum and start doing demos of DIY builds. I somewhat accomplished that, and would like to keep going in that direction.

All in all I learned a ton, had a shitload of fun and spent waaayyy too much money. Of course if my wife asks I tell her "ehhhh, ahhh, what are you talking about".

I feel very fortunate and lucky that I am able to do this and want to thank everyone here who has helped me, answer stupid questions or commented on builds, I really appreciate it.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Dan

I have been building like mad lately but haven't done much painting until last weekend, little back story....

All of my four younger brothers play guitar and all of them ask for different pedals and what not. My brother, Patrick, is starting to get more into pedals and asked me for recommendations, I immediately said a delay, phaser and fuzz. I also said that I would be more than willing to build it for him super cheap as long as I could paint whatever I wanted on it. He agreed and then I got him for secret santa, and I remember back when he was 10 and I told him this joke.

What do gay horses eat?

HAAAAAYYYYYYYY

We laughed and then he told mom and I got yelled at. Here is my retribution, Merry Christmas my little brother.

BTW it is a great sounding PT2399 delay, it sounds really great in front of an amp. Worst review ever.

Here are my readings;

TP4 - 6.22
VC - 17.97

Any help is always appreciated.

I started populating boards to see where i was at with parts and what I needed to order, three weeks later and I am almost done. Ten more stuffed just need to be soldered with five more to populate and solder. All enclosures are center punched but not drilled.

This year started with "oh I just want to buld a multiplex and a dirt baby, maybe a new fuzz".

It turned into something radically different.

Now to start sketching ideas for painting, the greatest problem i have ever had.

Audio/Video Demos / MBP Backing Track #2
November 01, 2018, 07:01:42 PM
Here is a demo using the PedalPCB.com Angry Andy and the Cross Contaminator. On the right channel is the Cross Contaminator with a jazzmaster into a Mesa Boogie Mini Rec. On the left side is the Jazzmaster into the Angry Andy into the Mini Rec with the Dirt Baby on for delay. The bass guitar is run through the board also using the Angry Andy for distortion and the drit baby for light slap back.

For anyone interested in playing over it, I left the first verse open and the chords are g minor to F major to B flat Major to a quick g minor/b flat/a minor before repeating over.

Here is the board.....

Lets hear what you all do!!!!

Build Reports / A couple of VFE Angry Birds
November 01, 2018, 06:45:15 PM
For the first time ever I had painted enclosures and then seal coated them before starting the builds. It has been a crazy busy week and a half but I have finished all I can. I accidentally bought the wrong switches for the tractor beam and with what I bought from the last run of VFEs and the sale today I still have quite a bit of work ahead. Hopefully everyone knows about what is happening with the VFE family and can take a few minutes to donate and throw in some prayers for them.

Here is the most recent builds, all Angry Birds because this is now my son, Dean, favorite game.

Here is the Alpha Dog (Red), a great take on the Rat pedal.

Here is the Triplet (Chuck), this one is kinda hard to dial in but there is some cool tones in here.

Here is the Blueprint (Stella), a very cool delay. I love that you can dial it in either dark or bright and the modulations is super nice.

Here is the White Horse (Hal), my favorite VFE build so far. It took me about a half hour to really dial it in but once I did I did not stop playing for a while. Still am playing between posts.

The Tractor Beam (the Blues), I ordered solder lug switches and need pcb mount switches so it sets half built.

Lastly just for good measure is the MBP Hipster (Bubbles), still picking transistors for it but having a super fun time with the auditions.

I still have four more to build but I think I am missing a few parts for each of them. I am going to post one a day on my instagram to hopefully draw more people over to the gofundme.

Hope you all enjoy.

Dan

Here is my first offset and what I told my wife is my last guitar.

Featuring a chambered swamp ash body in blue burst finish, roasted one piece maple neck with azurite inlays with a 52 tele sized crave to it. It also has a reverse warhead headstock with locking tuners and stainless steel frets. I have a a mastery bridge and vibrato setup in there and i used a stew mac neck shim, which was a first for me.

It is wired with the standard jazzmaster wiring and has a set of Sunday Handwound pickups woodies set. These pickups are ridiculous, I think they make the guitar sound great. There is none of that ice pick harshness and they are just siper smooth.

Let me know what you all think.

I was hoping to show build reports as I complete demos of them but I have more time to build and paint then I do to record. So here is the latest batch to get painted on, all picked from my sons favorite game on his iPad. They may have names I have no idea, he calls one a slug ball thrower?!?!

The first one is a PedalPCB.com Pyrocumulus Fuzz, sounds like a great Big Muff with a better set of tone controls.

Here is the Madbean pedals Fat Pants Jr. or as I like to call it fawking amazing. Honestly if no one has built this yet then get on it, just buy the right caps so you don't have to do what i did.

Lastly the octave board from PedalPCB.com, Squidward. Sounds like a really cool octave up pedal, low part count and I highly recommend it.

Audio/Video Demos / MBP Backing Track #1
October 01, 2018, 03:21:30 AM
Here is the first MBP backing track, I wanna hear what everyone does with this. Using your favorite Madbean pedal lets hear you rip over this track.

The track is mostly just e7#9 chord stabs with occasionally jumps to G and A, solo away.

Audio/Video Demos / MBP Blooze Rock Song
September 30, 2018, 04:32:25 PM
I wanted to try and showcase the naughtyfish, I set out to just do the naughtyfish but everytime I play the naughtyfish I get nothing done and just riff away mindlessly. It is an incredible little pedal, I love it!

So I used all four of my brain cells and focused and recorded this using an entire Madbean board. Stratocaster into the naughtyfish, into a tuner, into the kingslayer, into the dirtbaby and into a moodring, all into the front of a mesa mini rec.

The main rhythm guitar is my old strat with the moodring barely on with the kingslayer slamming the front of a mesa mini rec. I bring in a second guitar which is a prs sc58 using the exact same settings and pan them hard right and left. The naughtyfish is straight up the middle with a little moodring on it and a fourth guitar is on there with the dirt baby for slap back until the solo where i up the feedback and mix level. Bass guitar has a little dirtbaby love on it too.

Bloooooooozzzzeeee ROCK!

Build Reports / MBP Dirt Baby!!!
September 29, 2018, 03:47:12 PM
This thing is a wonderful delay, sounds really great and just has that thing about it where you want to play it all of the time. I am hoping to post an audio demo with it by tonight, with its cousin the Moodring and the naughty fish with the kingslayer for good measure. Great delay and I look forward to building the total recall to do a side by side.

Build Reports / Two rehoused Dunlop fuzzes
September 29, 2018, 03:31:35 PM
What is a man to do when someone is selling fuzz guts for 10 bucks? Buy them, put them in an enclosure, play them and realize why they wanted to get rid of them.

The best I can figure is they are the junk ones from the late 90s, early 00s. One sounds like a roaring dragon who has no testicles, the other the greatest chain smoking clown in the industry.

Build Reports / MBP Serendipity
September 21, 2018, 02:25:56 PM
About five years ago I built one of these for my friend, he loved it and was on his touring board for years. I bought a few more boards from haberdasher and just kept them in case he needed another one. He did when all of his gear was stolen. So here is his new replacement, the serendipity aka steak sauce.

My friend, eric goes by sauce, no idea but after twenty years of friendship i never bothered to ask. His dad has the nick name steak sauce and is this mythical bachelor and a man of extreme coolness. We decided there needs to be more stuff in honor of this man, hence the pedal.
