I'm happy to report after months of toiling away that the Nautilus and Zero Point Deluxe are finished! I made the final tweaks today and I am completely satisfied with both. The Aquaboy Deluxe is not far behind...a few more tweaks on that one and hopefully that will be completed as well. I should have some tentative release dates for these in the next few days.
Here's my build of the Nautilus.
Hope it sounds as good as it looks (but judging from my MB experience, it will!). Nice to see some new stuff coming Brian, keep it up!!!
Paul
AWESOME . now we need Stage Fright. i'd love to lose myself in a fuzz&phase environment!
is the Zero Point double time no modulation still happening? my pedalboard is becoming too stuffed,
i wanted a delay with a smaller footprint
Yeah, the Stage Fright is what I'm hanging out for. I want a kitchen sink phaser like that ;D
Awesome!
Congratulations!!! And hooray for new projects!!
Yes! I want one of each (and a stage fright when it comes out) ;D
Another one I'm really excited to build (been doing my best to learn up on filtering) and I'm already pondering song uses for it ... that's a super clean layout, too. I see many rotary switches in my next Smallbear order!
Will the Nautilus be available to pre-order? I could do with ordering a couple of boards and it'd save having to send two lots over.
No, I won't be doing pre-orders again anytime soon. It's too much of a logistical problem for little 'ol me. But, I will be placing the order for those in a matter of days, so we are talking about a couple weeks or so until it's available.
Great news! Is there a basic BOM of this project already available?
cool
Awesome! Just when i tought that i had bought all you big projects...... ;D
Here's the BOM.
You must use the VTL5C3 or the MI1210CLF-R for the two vactrols. The MI1210CLF-R is cheaper and works great.

If you want to roll your own, use the 9203 photocell - haven't tested these in the build, though

For the Mode switch, you can use either the 3P4T or 1P12T.

woo hoo! thanks for the early bom. very helpful indeed. 8)
This is really exciting. Any chance a BOM exists for the ZPD also?
Sooooo what's the word on the Fishhead?
So, if a guy was putting togather a Nautilus parts order, what size enclusure would he need?
1590BB, or 125BB or bigger.
Jacob
1590BB will work perfectly. Plenty of space to work with....for both the fabbed and etchable versions.
Just a heads up for anyone ordering 1n8 caps for this bom from tayda. They may have their parts bin for this particular component mis-labeled. The baggie the caps are in is labeled as 1n8 but the caps inside are actually 183's. I've emailed them about it just now to see if they just sent me the wrong part or what.
cheers
so exciting..ive always wanted a mutron..you make my dreams come true Brian!
Madbean; A quick query. I'm just ordering my parts for the nautilus from the BOM (a bit early I know but hey ho) during lunch break.
Would a VTL5C4 do the job for the octocouplers or does it have to be the VTL5C3?
The reason I ask is because VTL5C3's are a total PITA to get hold of in the UK. The VTL5C4, on the otherhand, is available straight from Farnell (the Digikey/Mouser of UK electronic stores).
I believe (speaking from memory) the 5C4 has much slower rise and fall times than the 5C3.
I can't remember how the resistance ranges compare.
Maybe the 5C1 would be better (faster response and greater dynamix range (resistance), though I'm not sure of the application.
Is it for a Mutron III clone?

The C4's on/off resistance is
vastly different from the C3's. There's a datasheet somewhere that has all of them listed in a chart for easy comparison, but I can never seem to find it when I need it, just the really big 30-page one.

Last couple I managed to snag cost me a tenner on ebay. Only one up at the moment for £12 on it's own... It's a piss take. Really could do with figuring out if there's a Solonex alternative which are sensibly priced these days. If all else fails I suppose I could try a roll your own.

The C3 subs from Smallbear (which are in Brian's build in the op) are $6 each. They sound really good in other things I've tested them in. Is Smallbear out of the question for you guys in the U.K.?
Last time I ordered from Small Bear their shipping costs to the UK were excessive. Im not sure if they have lowered their costs since though (it was over a year ago since I last ordered from them).

Very rarely use them as it works out expensive. Though ironically I did today for the first time in years (took me ages to remember my id/pass) to order some mini pots as no body sells them here. Typical really :(
Edit: Works out at £5 each for 4 (we're making 2, would have been cheaper had I ordered them with the pots *cries*). So not too bad I suppose compared to the stupid prices the VTLs are now. Actually they work out at £7 each so it's not bad over there. *If* you can get them here I've seen them for around £14 each... For a gooped photocell and LED.
If you can find the right photocell then you don't have to use a vactrol. You need 10-50k light, 10M dark response.
The closest photocell listed at smallbear is either the 9200 or 9203. So, whatever you can get overseas along those lines.
It's critical to have the right photocell or vactrol for the Nautilus. Otherwise it just won't work.

Banzai has VTL5C3 in stock and shipping to the UK shouldn't be more than 5 Euro. I actually still order from them and have it shipped to Canada as it's cheaper than Smallbear or ppp.
£6.51 each from Banzai. Looks like I'll be putting another order in with SB when the boards arrive. Ah well, was an interesting exercise.

Ah cheers for the info mate!
I think I'll go with Banzai then.
There are a few other bits and pieces that I can get from them as well (they are one of the few EU places where I have found the small belton bricks for sale).
Can get the small bricks from Das Musikding. They work out at about £14 each delivered from there. Though someone else reckoned it was cheaper to get them direct from Accutronics in Korea and it takes just as long (I get the impression that DMd don't carry them in stock as they take ages to deliver them).

I ordered from from Tayda and got the same 183J100's instead of the 1n8 caps (182J100). Did you hear anything from them about that? I just put in a ticket.
I need to order the rest of the BOM for the Nautilus. Are the pots and switches in the Nautilus build PCB mount?
This is only my second build and I'm really looking forward to it. The first was the BYOC Divided Octave. Maybe I should try to build the whole mu-tron family :)

Yeah I did receive a response from tayda but it was a simple apology letter for having made a mistake on my order. They didn't indicate whether they sent me the wrong part or if they had it mis-labeled in their bin. I did go look on their website though. Now they are showing the 1n8 out of stock, and are selling 18n's. So I do suspect that for a time they thought the 18n's were 1n8's.
BTW, the pots on the nautilus do look like pcb mount to me.
cheers
Just a heads up to fellow EU guys; I ordered my Vactrols, and a couple of Mini Belton Bricks, a few days ago from Banzai and they have already shipped the package.
Pretty quick turnaround and the price was about as good as I could find in the EU (Doctor Tweek is usually my first port of call for parts like this, but he no longer stocks them).
