Title: Arghh...earworm.
Post by: madbean on June 08, 2022, 03:49:38 AM
I'll admit it - I binged S4 of Stranger Things and I've had "Running up That Hill" as an earworm for like ten days now. Make it stop! Once, in my college years, I had John Coltrane's "Favorite Things" as an earworm for almost two months. It's a weird mix of maddening and relaxation at the same time. Must have brain reboot. Considering electrocution with a 9v battery.

Think of the intro bassline from "Come As You Are" on an infinite loop.

the only cure is to listen to more Kate Bush. I'd go with Never For Ever, personally.

I have heard (and what works for me) is to think of a very short commercial jingle over and over for a short time. Works every time.

My go to is "Byyyyyyy Menon" from the old deodorant ads.

I got hung up on the "five dollar foot long" Subway jingle.  It's been gone for years now but it kicks in every now and then.  The worst was noodling around with a lick on guitar the other day and wondering where it was from...only to realize it's the default alarm jingle on my Google Pixel phone.

I'm hitting the last episode of this first half of the season of ST4 tonight.  The episodes are so damn long that this one is tough to binge.  Which is a good thing.

Is Netflix still offering their shows through the binge model? No wonder they're losing subs and money.

It varies.  Some shows drop all the episodes at the same time for binge watching.  Other shows release an episode at a time.  Lately, the episode at a time model seems to be increasing, although there are still plenty of shows that release for binge.

They do seem to be losing subs lately, for myriad reasons.  The massive amount of competition from Disney and Apple has hurt them a bit, as well as a few other things.

I think it used to do well because of their focus on having content from all over the place. For a while there was a ton of movies and shows there. The move towards self-produced shows was smart, but they went to far into that. Now when I open Netflix 90% of what is available is made by Netflix. I think they would probably have switched to a more hybrid model a while back but it has become difficult to get content from other companies anymore because everyone wants to have their own service now.

Plus the average Netflix show is generally not great, here and there you find some good stuff, but it keeps getting harder.

The beginning of Metallica's "Sad But True" usually flushes out any earworm I'm currently experiencing. :-D

That started for me a few years ago when Meg Myers covered that song and it got heavy rotation on local radio.

My daughter is two and a half right now and her favorite movie is Moana. I've had "You're Welcome!" stuck in my head for about two months now. I wake up in the middle of the night with "I'm just an ordinary demi-guy!" already locked and loaded. The song is hilarious and great, but my god when will it end?!?!

Hah, that song is awesome, & I had that in my head for a while too.  I even youtube'd it & watched it a couple of times.

The fact that they are one of the (if not THEE) most expensive streaming service is probably the biggest factor.

Just wait til she sees Encanto... Let's just say I hear a LOT about Bruno, especially for a guy that we don't talk about.

Heard that one in Home Depot the other day in between two generic bro-country tunes. Thought it was pretty funny to hear a Disney song there

We've gotten through bits and pieces of that - it's a lot more complex of a story than Moana so it doesn't keep her interest as much yet. I'm not a big Disney person and wasn't big on us getting the Disney channel but I'm glad we did, but mainly because they have Flight of the Navigator on there and I can't wait to watch that one with her one day!

I don't know what I'm going to do when she discovers we're like three freeway exits from Disneyland. I'm not sure I'll make it.

The Disney+ subscription is worth it just for access to Bluey. If you haven't seen that show yet, watch it! It's definitely accessible for a two year old, but there's lots of Easter eggs for parents too. My wife and I will watch it after the kids go to bed.

I love Bluey - the ice cream episode is probably my favorite. "Ehhhh... it's pretty fair." is something I say pretty often  ;D

Newsflash: all better. If you are wondering how best to cure an earworm: drive through middle Tennessee while listening to Coltrane's A Love Supreme. It's magic!

I listened to a Santana interview a few months ago, and he said that every time he checks into a hotel, he plays a love supreme as a sonic sage to clear out whatever happened in there the night before. He said a lot of other goofy stuff too but that's the appeal 😂

Have you started counting long dogs and tennis balls? There's one in almost every episode.

A have an odd recurring earworm.  Every now and again, I'll get a section of a Souza march going through my head which will just come out of nowhere.  Crashing cymbals and everything.  It usually takes me a couple of days to shake it.  The weird thing is, it happens with 2 or 3 different marches of his, almost like they take turns rotating.  They must really be tattooed in my brain because I never listen to that kind of music otherwise.  I mean, he was obviously the MAN when it came to that type of music, but to be stuck on them like that is really annoying.  After a while it might as well be something like Send in the Clowns.
FWIW, I was never in a marching band.

Stranger Things did it to me with - Twist of Fate - as well

Super rad that these songs and artists get a nice bump again when these things happen

Zomg this thread. And this song... Just started back with my old covers band! Having a lot of fun, but dang we play some earworms! This one (Final Countdown) is now banned in our house after I had to learn the solo, sorry to my patient family... Took some time to get a passable version 😆

Don't click this.  The 8-note bass line that forms the bulk of this film's soundtrack reenters my head every now and then, like an awful flashback. It reentered again today, in fact.

I haven't clicked yet. I remember seeing the movie but I don't remember the music at all.

I am bonkers for the Alan Parsons Project.
I hate when Sirius/Eye in the Sky play on Sirius XM.

I will be thinking it for weeks.
