Title: Cave Dweller (with relay switching)
Post by: derevaun on May 16, 2014, 08:21:59 PM
Finally boxed up the Cave Dweller, in 1590b with top mounted jacks and relay switching.

I OSHParked (http://oshpark.com/profiles/derevaun) a board for Mictester's relay switching scheme (http://freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13295) with a momentary stomp, using the Neutrik-alike plastic jacks from Tayda. They suck, but it works. 0805 passives on the underside (my first SMD!). Just enough room for a thinline DC jack (from BLMS). I'm gonna use low profile jacks next time I try to topmount in a 1590b.

I tried a "bicolor stone" texturized spraypaint, which came out more texturized than bicolor, but close enough. Riffed on some cave painting with India ink. The LED just points toward the hole; some hot glue works well enough to transmit its light.

I love how the stone paint ties into the whole theme. That's a great build.

Whoa!
Very cool indeed! Great job topmounting those jacks!

The top looks pretty damn cool (someone else has discovered the magic of India Ink!), and the guts look pretty mindblowing :D

That looks great! I may have to try out your board soon, looks like a great idea having the jacks and relay all in one.

Great stone finish, love that look and like alanp mentioned... the secret of India Ink is spreading. Back to the caveman basics. Nicely done!

Theme & execution = WIN. This is looking like an entry for the next contest.

BTW, how is that relay circuit work working out? No switch bounce problems?

This is awesome. I've never seen that kind of paint before!

With those hips, hair, waist and stilletos i assumed the guitar player was female.... or maybe Fee Waybill, caveman of the protopunkocene geologic era.

Thanks guys!

@sonarchotic: the relay board is such that the in jack is left and out is right. It takes up a lot of space in a 1590b, but I suspect that it would leave room for pots above it in a 125b. I'm gonna try that pretty soon, but I think low profile jacks are the way to go with a top-mounted setup like this.

@jubal81: no bounce problems so far--in fact, it won't abide rapid switching with the values I used (100nF and 220nF caps, 1M resistor).  It's like half a second, which I don't foresee to be a problem but it still seems kind of long.

Here's a shot of the populated relay board. I had made a similar board based on the Wicked Switches circuit, but there was some major tone suck that I attributed to damaged CMOS chips or my ham-fisted SMD soldering and summarily tossed the boards in the garbage. I was pretty bummed that this board had the same tone suck...until I changed to different patch cables. Dangit!
