Not exactly what you asked for, but IMHO, the best budget guitars are the G&L tribute line.  I love my Tribute ASAT and Tribute Invader, each cost only ~$300-350 used in perfect condition.  They play and sound amazing.

+1! I ended up spending more and buying an ASAt Special but I was pretty impressed with several of their Tribute guitars. I love my G&L and plan on buying a Comanche down the road.

EDIT: I should reiterate, I think buying a warmth neck and pups if necessary is your best bang for the buck move. Call Warmoth, they are very helpful and their return policy is great. Browse their in stock necks. Typically, you'll save a few bucks if you buy one in stock. You could order it, dry fit it in the neck pocket and see how it fits. Don't put a screw to it and they'll take it back if it doesn't work. Best of luck and enjoy whatever you end up doing.

As long as you don't put a #8 or #24 decal on that, I'll commend you on the build. Nicely done.

Are those WIMAs? Where do you buy yours?

I don't have experience with the brands you're looking at. I can second Jacob's recommendation of improving what you have. I'd take a good look at Warmoth's vintage modern tele necks. I've played a few warmoth's with this neck and was very impressed the the quality and the finish. You'll probably want to have the frets dressed, but other than that, they're great necks.

Sorry for the frustrations man. In the future, may I suggest rigging up a battery snap to a 2.1mm plug. You can just use that to power the effect when you're taking it to show off and don't want to lug the adaptor. Just make sure you wire it according to the effect, negative or positive ground.

Open Discussion / Free backing tracks online?
December 14, 2011, 01:44:11 AM
I'm in search of website that have good backing tracks, either for songs, or just grooves to improvise over. I just started searching and came across this one for songs. Some are really cheesy midi files, but I've found some good Pink Floyd, Dire Straights, etc.

Jacob,

Awesome post! Thank you for taking the time to write that out.

After having built a bunch of pedals I've decided to stop and start to go back through them to try and at least understand the basics of what is happening in the circuit. I've read through Brian Wampler's books that were posted in another thread and would recommend them to fellow noobs. He walks through a number of circuits like you just did. I know it's child's play to a lot of you guys, but your explanation really helped further my knowledge, so thanks again.

I'm now going through the online books Brian posted in the extra projects section to see which one might be best to start with. I don't have time to get deep into the science, but I'd like to have some understanding as to what I'm doing as I build so that I can start tweaking things with some anticipated results.

Nice looking decal on the Grapevine. I love the EgoDriver, it's a go to OD for me.

Jacob,

Care to post a screen shot of the numbers/pages docs? I've got both and am going to start up an inventory list.

Is that pink ?  ;D Just kidding. It must look cool on  your board with the light plate. I thought about doing that to mine.

What benefit does running it at 15v do? More headroom or does it affect the modulation?

I believe the road rage has been updated since I did this, but it's a start.

Read the road rage project PDF to see the components needed for -9v operation, it's only a few that need to be populated. Good luck, you should be fine.

I bought two of these http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/bins-containers/40-bin-organizer-with-full-length-drawer-94375.html
These house my resistors and caps. Used a sharpie to write values on each drawer.

I bought three of these http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/bins-containers/24-divider-storage-container-94458.html
I use these for pots, diodes, sockets, LEDs, switches, etc.

Wasn't too expensive and it's been very nice knowing where everything is.

I built the PNP version with a road rage
and had no issues, it was my first fuzz or positive ground effect for that matter. I posted a wiring diagram that I found somewhere on the forum. I'll find a link tomorrow of you can't find it searching "mangler" & "road rage".

Sweet guitars guys and congrats! I'm impressed with the relic job, looks really good.

I just got done playing my G&L Asat Special, which I bought a few months ago, through my newly built but unboxed Lavache into my Allen Encore. I couldn't help but tune open G for a bit and bang out what little Stones I know. It's a sweet sounding combo those three.
