About a month ago I was blown away when my grandma asked me to make her a klon. Finally the last parts came in the mail today. So I threw it together and snapped these pictures. I'll film a video of her playing it when I take it to her. It feels weird to spend so much time on a pedal I'm making for free. ;D
It was laser etched, but the contrast of the aluminum and the gold vein powdercoat made it impossible to read. I used a technique a gunsmith taught me. I warmed up the enclosure and rubbed a white crayon in the etch, then buffed the excess away.

I believe they sell wax fill sticks for the exact purpose you referred to. I haven't purchased any yet, but I will one of these days.

This turned out really nice! The lettering looks awesome with that powder coat finish. I would say the best part about the build is not only you have a granny that can play music but knows what a Klon is at that. A lot of guitarists I know aren't even hip to the Klon hype. I think you win with this one!

Believe it or not, crayon is surprisingly durable. Like I said, a gunsmith showed me how to do that. I filled the lettering on my handgun and it hasn't messed up at all after a few thousand rounds through it. Even when it gets warm from shooting and the slide cycling. And going in and out of my holster it hasn't chipped or melted.

I tried this technique yesterday as was having issues with the contrast after laser engraving. I used a normal wax crayon I had, I imagine most will work just fine.
I heated the enclosure from inside for about 10 seconds with a small blow torch, not focussing the heat too much on one spot. Then attempted to colour in the engraving, the crayon melts and fills it nicely. I put a little excess on and made sure it was all a uniform colour. Popped it in the freezer for 5-10 mins, got it out and rubbed the top with a soft cloth, the friction causes enough heat to remove any excess wax and leaves the engraved area filled.
Are we clearcoating over the wax? Or will that not work?
I love this build and it was one of my votes in the spring contest.
....just has that super slick "wow" factor.
