So I have a really neat little Melody archtop that has two single coil pickups (with 2 leads and 1 ground on each for some reason) And the switching consists of 2 DPDT sliders, 1 Volume and 1 tone.

I'm curious if there's any thoughts on wiring this? I had considered wiring it ala Jagstang but the Jagstang uses the 4 lead switches.

Right now what I'd like to do is wire it so that each switch basically functions as a pickup on/off point. But is there a way to wire it so that it can have one function as a phase switch as well? There probably is I'm just a dummy when it comes to this particular kind of thing.

Any thoughts?

General Questions / Acoustic Reverb?
January 25, 2016, 05:24:04 PM
So I'm looking for a nice simple reverb for my church acoustic rig. Was curious if anyone else here has one that they've used alot, not looking to do overly etheral but it'd be a nice ability. My current sound is just so dry so I want to spruce it up a bit.

I currently use an LR Baggs M1A with a Para DI going into the PA. The DI has an effects loop and that is where I'd be using the reverb.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Less Delay in Mix?
October 08, 2014, 02:20:57 PM
So I've been building some more delays as of late, and I'm wanting to make one that has less of the delay on the mix knob. I've been using 100K pots, would I get less delay in the mix if I upped the value to something like 250K?

Build Reports / "Soba" Germanium Boost
September 15, 2014, 11:55:17 PM
Haven't been posting much due to work, but it's great to be back at it! I am an addict so here's a single germanium boost. Really close to a rangemaster but with a few tweaks to open up the sound and make it less of a treble boost and more rounded out. Just gotta love that asymetrical grit on a nice loud amp.

Build Reports / "Hikari" Drive, something original?
July 31, 2014, 12:28:08 AM
So this is one that I've been working on for a few weeks now, I have utterly become obsessed with the sound of a rangemaster pushing a nice dark amp, that beautiful subtle distortion with the huge amount of upper harmonics... love it! However I wanted to try to get more of that wonderful distortion with some more interesting harmonic content, thus we have this pedal. The breadboard got alot of good use out of this one. It's essentially a two stage one knob "driver" with the first stage being almost exactly a Rangemaster, however instead of the usual -7v the first transistor is biased at a much lower voltage. The second stage uses something called reverse beta, if you're not familiar with it I won't bore you, there's tons of good articles on it on the intrewebs. google-fu!

The reverse transistor in this circuit provides a much different sound than your typical "drive". Besides being focused on the upper harmonics/upper mids, this configuration provides the circuit with a clipped sound that has a bunch of harmonics that is not present in any other pedal I've heard yet. Drives an amp very well and is extremely responsive to playing styles, harder picking gets you more distortion less is less etc... The overall gain of both stages is actually about where a standard rangemaster would sit.

The paintjob is pretty lame (not sure what happened with the white ink), but it was a journey and I'm happy I did it! If you want a schematic I'll post it, if not, then ok.

Build Reports / "Zatoichi" Delay
July 16, 2014, 12:47:58 AM
Here's my latest, a simple delay based on culturejam's Ersatz Verben. really I just screwed with some cap values to change up some of the tones on the delays and resistor values to increase the delay times. really cool circuit and alot of fun to build.

If you don't know Zatoichi, it's a series of Japanese movies about a blind swordsman based in the Edo period of Japan (That'd be the 1830s to around the 1840s). The first film was made in 1962 and they continued for quite a while, I have all of them in my collection and they are among my favorites. They were filmed in a period when Japan was just starting to come out of the post WW2 shock that they experienced, film, culture, and art had a sudden massive influx of western influence and these movies have a unique (to me anyway) way of letting you see what the remnants of the old culture of Japan was like and how they were adapting to their new way of life after the war. If you haven't seen them then I encourage you to check them out, you never know, there's enough of these movies that you might find one that you like.

This pedal was my first time working with ICs. It's alot of fun and this circuit has inspired me to do more and explore with ICs and delays/reverbs etc. My wiring isn't great, and there's one solder joint I realize now looking at the pics I should've fixed, I'll get it later.

Pics...

Tech Help - Projects Page / Ersatz Verben help!
July 14, 2014, 05:34:30 PM
So I have been pulling my hair out for the past 3 days trying to get this thing to work. I have triple checked voltages, pinouts, layouts, audio path, crossed points, solder joints, sockets, literally just about everything I am capable of checking and it still just doesn't work. I have tried it with 4 different PT2399s and there is just nothing going on.

Here's the schematic that culturejam posted

And here's the layout I used from tagboardeffects

http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2012/03/ersatz-verben-psuedo-reverb-by.html

And here's my board

It is hard to see it because the jumper on the left hides it but there is a 1k resistor going from pin 6 to the 1 lug of the "Time" pot. The regulator is a 7805, I have already tried the 78L05 and still no results.

Solder Side....

Another view....

The pot values are all as stated on the schematic except I changed the time pot to 100kB for longer delay times

Please help as I'm getting to the point of just never wanting to work with ICs at all.

General Questions / Birthday phaser suggestions?
July 04, 2014, 12:55:20 PM
So one of my bass player friends is having a birthday soon and I want to build him a phaser. He's got a fuzz and he wanted something else to put with it.

Since it's for bass I was wondering if you guys had some suggestions? I'd prefer to do a pcb as I've currently used all of my vero :P

Build Reports / "Taishu" Fuzz
June 30, 2014, 11:47:25 PM
So this is the Taishu, a fuzzface/tonebender hybrid. I'm happy with everything except a few crossed wires I don't feel like resoldering.

If you know what the name means, don't spoil it for everyone else ;)

So a good friend of mine asked me to fix his Trem Face. these are really cool little pedals. What this one is doing is that when it's plugged in it makes noise, the caps have some effect but it's more like a filter. There is a crackle on one of the pots (needs cleaning) but the effect itself sounds like it's just trying REALLY hard to do it's thing but it's not, just sort of crackles but with no tremolo effect. Battery was fresh and everything. Any thoughts?

I took it apart and here's a few pictures. I was hoping to run this by some folks who know a little more than I do about this rather than me just trying things until it works.

One thing I noticed right off is that several components are not period correct. I have yet to check the values against a decent schematic but I will soon.

I took a multimeter to all the parts, the only one that didn't read quite right was the second cap. It's a 320uf that's rated at 2.5v. My gut tells me that that might be a problem considering that it's a 9v circuit and with the FET it might be regulated to a lower voltage. So wouldn't the cap need to be rated for like 6-7v? Plus it just looks..... odd. This is the negative end of the cap, typically on these I've seen this end is flat, leaky?

And here's a picture of the solder-side.

Alright, so I know this is rookie stuff (if you don't know ask right?)

But I am building a small atari punk console as a birthday gift for a good friend of mine. Instead of using a whole footswitch for the thing since it's only an output I am wanting to use a spst switch as a simple on/off toggle.

My question is though, in order to preserve the battery life is it better to connect the + of the power flow or the - to the switch and then just have the other run into the unit to complete the circuit? I don't think it matters I just want to keep the unit from constantly being on and draining the battery.

Open Discussion / Reverb/Resonance schematic?
June 12, 2014, 11:50:24 PM
So I have recently become entranced with the idea of an analog resonance pedal. Similar to the Last Gasp Misty Cave (love that thing) and I want to build one. But all I can really find is either a delay or a straight up reverb.

anyone know of anything that's similar to that? Here's a vid showing what it does

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed53uohqGbw

I just really want that "chamber" sound it has in my rig. So if there's a relatively simply schematic/project I'd love to hear about it.

Build Reports / The "Mk1"
June 05, 2014, 07:18:27 PM
This build was a fun one, my take on a Mk1.5 Tonebender.

The enclosure could've been finished better but I'm happy with it. what I'm more happy about is the fact that it worked 100% the first time I plugged it in  ;D

Open Discussion / Calligraphy on Enclosures
June 02, 2014, 02:01:55 PM
So here's my predicament, I am trying to find the most effective way to do some calligraphy (Kanji) on some enclosures that are already painted, I'm doing these for a friend and he has already spray painted the enclosures, there is no clearcoat on them but I don't want to do it and then have it just fall apart on him due to me using the wrong paint type etc....

Is there an effective way to add paintwork on top of existing paint or should I simply ask him for a bare enclosure? Also what kind of paint do you think would be the most effective?

Open Discussion / Looking for a New amp!
June 02, 2014, 01:54:43 AM
So this might be a tall order, but I'm looking for around a 5watter tubey (I'm in an apartment) that preferably has a darker voxy/marshall tone. I'm trying to get after that Rory Gallagher style slide tone so I will be using a treblebooster almost 98% of the time. I prefer some headroom but I don't play metal so I don't need a headbangers bedroom dream.

I don't need effects, just something I can drive on the treble side and not get spiky. Does that make any sense? Any links/recs are accepted. I'm trying to stay on the cheaper side of things but I don't really have a crazy budget, however a 1000$ 5 watter won't be something I'm after, let's just say around 500 to 600.

Alright ya'll are probably getting bored of seeing these, but I just finished this one and I really made an effort to improve the wiring/layout as per some members recommendations such as eliminating standing resistors shortening leads etc...

Anyways I promise my next build will be something different :P

#17
So instead of just building pedals as a whole I decided to try to take some time and improve my wiring/soldering jobs. Here's one I just finished, I've redone my layout for this pedal to eliminate jumpers/standing resistors etc...

The wiring was going to be twisted but it looked really off and didn't fit well with the twist on just one side, any thoughts? The battery sits correctly I just hadn't pushed it down in there for the picture

Build Reports / A Pair of Boosters
May 20, 2014, 12:41:58 PM
These are two more trebleboosters that I finished up this week. A poster on this forum suggested that I work a bit harder on making my wiring and other such things more suitable/reliable so that they'll last longer. I took his advice and really tried to cut the leads to a suitable length, worked on making all the solder joints nice and covered, basically eliminating all dry joints. He also suggested that I not let the battery flop around so much, so the velcro closes it off and keeps it from moving around in the pedal.

I am really wanting to get better at building so if anyone has any other advice then feel free to share :D

General Questions / Battery clips?

I see people putting the little metal clip looking things in their pedals all the time. Curious if anyone knows a good place to get them?
