General Questions / stereo/mono pickup split switch
October 19, 2023, 10:45:39 PM
Hey guys,

I've been looking at A/B/Y switching diagrams to do a thing I want with pickups, but they seem a step more complicated than I'm looking for.

In short here's what I want:

Neck PUP and bridge PUP routed through a switch going to a single output jack. (Jack A)
when the switch is flipped Neck stays going out Jack A, but bridge PUP re-routes out of Jack B.

How do I do that?

My full wiring is:
Each PUP has it's own volume and tone control.
There is only one swtich

Neck>N-vol>N-tone>switch1
Bridge>B-vol>B-tone>switch1

switch1>J1 and J2

switch pos 1 > Neck and Bridge to J1

switch pos 2 > Neck to J1  -and- Bridge to J2.

How do I wire this switch?

Open Discussion / What to do in Portland, OR
April 26, 2018, 05:41:53 AM
I'm in Portland this week learning how to build solid body guitars from less than scratch.

I'll have next Sunday and Monday to do stuff in the area.

Any recommendations?

Open Discussion / Jewelry things

I have a friend living with me for a while and she makes jewelry like we make pedals.  She asked if she could have some stuff from my stash.

This is the first few things she came up with just messing around.

Calling all acquaintances, friends, friends of friend, nice people who are out there.

There is a high probability that I will be moving to the Baltimore-DC area in the next couple months.
I've never lived in this area before and I'm not sure what I'm getting into.

Is there anybody out there that can help me with this transition?

Open Discussion / DODsplosion

I've been out of the forum for a while dealing with real life (stupid real life) but I'm gonna try to get back into the hobby again.

Here's a collection I've started lately.
I'm not going for all the DOD pedals, but more like all the "weird" DOD pedals that were released in the 80s and 90s.
Keep an eye out on my Youtube channel, as I'll be demoing all these through some fat bass in the coming weeks.

I'm missing some like the Edge, Metal X, and Fat Pig, but I'm not too concerned with those (although I do want to get them eventually. They are usually way too overpriced because of their mojo.  Their aweful, aweful mojo.)
The one that I don't have and want is the Deep Freeze.
There is one that keeps showing up on ebay for like $150.  Funk dat.
Keep your eyes open for a DOD Deep Freeze for less than $100 for me please.

Otherwise, here's some share.

Does anyone have a copy of the build do tinnitus industries Iron Lung, horizontal layout?
Ever since dropbox went to shit I've had a hard time finding some of the less recent build docs.

I've been reading articles on voter ID problems. The most common theme is not that people should have to have an ID, but that it is hard for some people to get an ID. It's hard for poor people to afford it. It's hard for people without cars to get to the place they need to be to get an ID to get a license to drive the car they need to drive to get to the place you get drivers licenses. You have to have a birth certificate, or marriage license, or some other form to prove who you say you are to get an ID that tells other people who you are. And so on.

I still don't understand.

I knew a girl who was born in the woods, delivered by her uncle, never met anybody out of her family before she was 6, didn't know how to start a car, didn't know fans could be attached to ceilings, had to walk through half a mile of pine forest to get to the dirt road to get to the gravel road to get to the paved road to get the town that had one store that only sold one kind of milk, didn't have a social security number until she was 18, could play guitar and accordion like a beast, drank well water, learned to read using only the Holy Bible a mirror and the Hank Williams album "Moanin' the Blues" she played on a hand cranked Victrola, who thought candy meant honeysuckle or blackberries, still doesn't know the three branches of government, has never paid taxes, has never received "benefits", took her baths weekly with her family in the lake on the other side of the high-line, didn't know what the high-line was, hadn't handled money until she was 12, understood particle physics based on nothing but watching squirrels throw acorns at each other but didn't have the vocabulary to say "particle physics", shared her shoes with her brother, had to take turns on the corn meal machine because that was their only toy, and thought the sky was held up by the clouds.

She still got along fine when she decided to go to school and had to get a government ID to register. What's so hard about getting an ID card when you live in a city on 1 million people?

Open Discussion / Taped frets
September 25, 2016, 08:15:35 PM
I like a very soft sound, almost fretless but not quite.
Frets just sound, so, fretty and twangy. Too much clickity-clack when playing aggressive. Too much attack when playing soft.
I hate that, but I also don't like the sound of straight fretless. Fretless is too slow and I can't do as much string manipulation without frets.

So here's my striking now. Highs rolled all the way out. Mids rolled way down. Finger striking the strings. Nickle strings. Taped frets.
Yes, I've begin taping over my frets. I have two layers of black electrical tape covering every fret.
It's working pretty well. It's kind of a pain in the ass to do and redo when the tape starts wearing away.

Has anybody ever heard of a hard rubberized or nylon/polyester/other fretting system?
(If not I got dibs on naming it.)

I'll have to do a demo and side-by-side at some point. I've been trying to focus more on writing music lately than working with pedals, but I may need a break now that I can rumble your guts from anywhere on the planet.

Right off the bat, they sound pretty nearly identical.  Any difference i hear is probably because I've been playing my vintage unit so long it obeys my mental commands.

Open Discussion / Pan vs Switch
June 15, 2016, 12:54:45 PM
What happens if you use an assortment of pots to pan between things that usually use a switch to select?
This could be for anything that uses a switch to select wave shapes or whatever, but for simplicity sake lets talk a bout distortion.

So on the Slow Loris we have a switch that selects between three different clipping modes.  Instead of using a switch, is there a way to wire a panning potentiometer to select modes?  And if we did, would it work?

(Also, I'll be in Salt Lake City [Lehi actually] tonight to sign titties if anyone is out there to hang out.]

today I socketed a socket.

I always thought these forum stories were wild fantasies of deranged solder monkeys high on their own lead filled fumes.
But no crap, there I was socketing a socket.

I just wanted to make sure this was nice and searchable on the forum.
I took me a little more heartache than it should have when I was first trying to figure out how to get voltages.

It's chromesphere's BtB on how to get voltage readings.

New peaches day!

My first fruit harvest from my first fruit tree.
I'm gonna have the shits for days.

There are probably that many more on the tree that could use a little more time.

I was inspired to throw this together by billstein
http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=20920.0

While he clearly cares about his project way more than I do mine, I still felt like I should throw a 1590A together again.
Each time I do one of these I remember why I don't build these.

Anyway, to get everything to fit I had to employ my trademarked "Destroy-a-Jack"

After that it was just painstakingly careful drilling and frustratingly tedious aligning.
Another reason I wanted to stuff this into a 1590A is because I have a few laying around.  Enclosures are expensive, I can' be putting a bloviator in a 125B.
I've been wanting to build the bloviator to see if it was something I was interested in.  Apparently I'm not. I don't really care for such a simple EQ, I already run a ton EQ in my chain and this would just be another thing I'd have to tweek.
I seem like I'm bitching, and I probably am.  But even with a build I have no real use for and will end up in the salvage box, I still enjoyed putting it together and getting a working product. I guess that's what's great about this hobby.

So, I was trying to write an album last year. That went to crap and I trashed it.
Now I'm working on another one.
Oh mama, I got some weird stuff brewing in this one.

It couldn't wait. It pushes my Riff Maker (Shredmaster) so good I can't wait to put it in a box to add to my board.
