General Questions / momentary switch bypass circuit
February 22, 2013, 03:05:23 PM
What are you guys using for a momentary 'soft-touch' switch true bypass?
I remember seeing a few in build reports.
I kind of have this idea of making a TB looper with all momentary switches....
Just curious what circuit/board you guys are using for that purpose.
Thanks!

I found the papillo brand on amazon for a pretty decent price. There are different kinds out there. I personally prefer to use the kind made for laser printers over ink jet...

Cool stuff. I'm thinking about trying this out. I'm tempted to replace my master volume with it instead of mounting it on the back. Is there any reason to keep MV if you have VVR?

Also, do you like how it's performing?

Well lets start by saying I am not an amp guru... I'm just a tinker-er that has a little tiny bit of amp knowledge. Just enough to not kill myself basically.
The VVR does what you would think a master volume would; it keeps whatever tone you have going and reduces volume according to where the VVR is set.
For what I wanted it to do, it works well. I wanted to get the Carmen Ghia into a slightly broken up sound without crazy volumes that it might take to get to breakup. I play mostly in church settings or settings where I'll be mic'd. And since I'm a sound man too, I know how annoying loud guitar amp stage volume can be. I wanted to keep my amp in a sweet spot, but not be too loud.
My Dr. Z Maz 18 has a master volume, and on the Maz at least, the MV works very well so I don't really feel the need for the VVR on it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are different approaches to Master volumes so I'm not really sure if you could replace a MV with a VVR...
Not sure how Dr .Z master volumes differ from other MVs, but the Z master volume seems to work very well.
But if you have a non-master volume, cathode biased amp, I'd recommend trying it.
This guy's video shows how mine works:

General Questions / Re: Kingslayer clipping
February 18, 2013, 09:35:36 PM
1 facing north, 2 facing south in series is what I understand to be asymmetrical.
From my experience clipping differences are really pretty subtle.
The different clipping diodes in my Kingslayer are pretty subtle too, but noticeable when listening closely.

I never would have spotted the little ghost!

Not to derail this, but the Zero Point has a shimmer? Is it the typical 'shimmer' effect like the Blue Sky/M9?

Ok so, I called about my order since it's been 11 days and have received as much as an email.
I asked if there was an issue and they said "looks like your payment didn't go through. Lemme charge it to your card. " boom. done.
Would it be too much to ask for an email notification that my order didn't go through correctly?

Open Discussion / Re: Smallbear is getting transformed!

Glad to see the Small Bear improvement.
One of the ladies at PedalPartsPlus told me they were in the process of redesigning their site to make it really easy to order enclosures but their programmer/designer passed away near the end of the process so that set them back... but she told me there would be a huge improvement soon. That was a month ago.

Keefe etched me a small VVR (power scaling) PCB and it worked really well on my Dr. Z Carmen Ghia.
I used the Hall Amplification circuit. pretty easy to implement as well!
I only went the DIY route when Hall didn't answer my email for over a month.
If you can still get the hall I would do that because the DIY route isn't cost effective once it's all said and done.

I need to go back and replace the wire with some solid core wire, this was all I had at the time.

I'm not bashing Blake. He is running a great business.
Im asking if anyone else is having the same slow processing/shipping as I've had the last two orders.
last time it took nearly 2 weeks to make it 50 minutes to my house.
This time I ordered some caps, knobs, & a switch 8 days ago and it hasn't shipped.
Just seems weird.

The last couple of my orders from mammoth I haven't been very pleased with.
I can order stuff from PPP and mouser and get them in in 2 days. I live 50 minutes from Mammoth and it takes about 9-10 days to get 10-15 small parts. Just wondering if anyone has had any of the same issues?
Maybe I need to be more patient.  ???

Great design/implementation.

I like the idea of using a pre-coated enclosure and then sanding back the areas you want to etch. Did the textured coating sand off relatively easily?

I'm interested in hearing about this as well.
SICK build man! Love it.
I really want a shoot the moon board!
