How to mount LED's without bezels?

I've seen some nice builds here that look like the led is not mounted in a bezel.  They look real clean and I like that.  How is this done?  Hot melt or epoxy?

Also can 3mm and 5mm LED's be used interchangeably?

Yep.  Hot glue, epoxy, or even held in place by the PCB...as long as the PCB is firmly mounted to pots or the 3PDT.

And, yes, you can interchange 3mm and 5mm LEDs for the indicator light.  You may want to experiment with the value of the current limiting resistor to get the perfect level of brightness, but you can probably just throw a 4K7 in there and be done with it.  Elsewhere in effects circuits LED varieties tend to be chosen for their specs (forward voltage, luminosity, etc.), but you can be pretty loose with how you choose an indicator LED.
