Title: Anyone built a vero PLL?
Post by: soldersqueeze on August 20, 2017, 05:51:54 PM
Hey eveyone, this is my first post since 2013, meaning i've been out of the pedal game for 4ish years  :o I've realised i really miss it and want to start putting in the time again!
Feeling an urge to prove something to myself, i'm going to attempt  a PLLone, as i've always wanted to try one out. I know it might be wiser to start with a fuzzface or something, but so far it's going OK-
(http://i.imgur.com/ybYx5aw.jpg)

What I'm wondering is if anyone here has done this, and if they have any photos or advice. The great Photobucket nightmare has hindered my research somewhat  >:(

Anywhoo, it's nice to be back and I hope to be here often. Now I'm off to drool at the build reports section some more! Best wishes to you all

Ambitious! Go for it!

I'd check out the thread on DIYSB by digit2. it's in the members section.
Even though the pics aren't there anymore, you can check out the section in the gallery ... it's got all the docs for his vero build.

I'm working on a pcb with Dino (digi2t) at the moment, i'll keep you posted.

A blue dino schumann PLL board has been in my box of fail for quite awhile, something's sick with the input opamp.

This will be a new pcb design with board mounted components, I'm keen to avoid too much off board wiring.

 :o :o :o

Nice!

That looks actually a lot more like Ftelletronica's take on the PLL than the original one... So, including the drone part, which is amazing, but with even more stuff...

What are the pushbuttons for? or maybe is it just to mark the positionning of the pots?

That looks nuts. Is there more pots/switches than resistors/capacitors on that PCB?

No push buttons, they are 9mm pots.

It includes the drone and momentary footswitches on board, the only external input is for an areppegiator.

Yup, there isn't much to it if you remove all of the pots and switches

soldersqueeze,  I only found out about the PLL this week and have been gathering info. It must be that EQD pedal that's made it pop up so much as a topic of conversation recently.  This guy  built one w/ mods using the same Tagboard layout as you:
http://jbpedals.blogspot.gr/2016/09/schumman-pll-clone-with-add-ons.html

I'm tempted too...

I've hit a bit of a snag with the design I made.  I cannot find a B2M 9mm right angled pot for the response control.  I get the impression they don't exist.

Anyone got any ideas where to find one???? otherwise it's back to the drawing board.
Title: Re: Anyone built a vero PLL?
Post by: Andlord on September 04, 2017, 11:16:01 AM
You could contact alpha and ask them if they would do a small run. On their website the biggest value for 9mm pots is 1M.

Maybe it is easier to just design it to wire off board

Dualgang 1M pot in series with itself?

your layout looks fantastic. If it becomes available, this is one of those builds I want to build not because I need or would use the effect much, but rather for the challenge. Drilling the enclosure will be giving me nightmares for days.

I've managed to rework it so that I can fit a 16mm pot on-board for the response control.  it's not ideal, but it will do the job.  I just need to get the stomp switches spaced correctly and do a final check over, then I think I can get a set of prototypes made.  Keep your eyes peeled for updates.

Title: Re: Anyone built a vero PLL?

Yeah, I had trouble routing it with the divider below the multipler, too many crossed traces with the pots and ICs.  This isn't as faithful to the original but given the drone and momentary footswitches and all the off board stuff are all on board I think most people won't mind.

Thanks for the link, here are a few pics to encourage you to join me in this madness

All the wires

I rigged it up so i could wire up one side of the board then flip it over. The layout is really good for this as most of the pot wires are one side and the rotary switch wires the other.

Flipped the board and wired switches before transfering to the box. There are a few wires from the pots which need to be joined with wires from the "rotary switch" side of the board to be soldered up and tucked away, but it means i can flip over the board if i need to trouble shoot the wiring or solder side of the vero. Think it's going well so far.

Does this run on 12vac like the original? I have a 500ma 12vac adaptor from ebay and have been wondering about wiring ac power. Do i just take one terminal to the +12vac wire on the board and treat the other as i normally would ground? Any input greatly appreciated.
Title: Re: Anyone built a vero PLL?
Post by: PMowdes2 on October 25, 2017, 09:59:27 PM

Yes and yes.  The PLL splits the ac power though the two regulators which are adjusted via the two trimmers, you should be looking for +11V and - 11V there or there abouts depending on the iCs you are using.  Have a look through the thread over on DIY for a clearer idea of how to set it up.

Thank you that's great. I couldn't find anything specific to wiring the power input, and just have a real mental block when it comes to the fact that it doesn't matter which way round you wire the tip and sleeve of the power. I guess it's because i've never used AC for anything before.

So things went a bit quiet on this one, sorry.
The original build works great but the 9mm pot combo with the large rotary switches as a no go, plus all the controls were mega cramped.
So I rejigged it with 16mm pots in a larger layout, ordered the boards and sat around waiting.

The delivery went missing in the post but finally arrived yesterday.

As always I'm short of a few components but I think it's much better in a larger enclosure. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171220/a3c77f6541dcf598d39a16bc435e0c19.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171220/4368e864eddef560fea52ff63b306867.jpg)

It almost sounds like an envelope following voltage starve. Its not, I can see the schematic, but thats the first thing my ear thought. The schematic is a bit CMOS'y for my brain to easily track though, so who knows.
