General Questions / Re: Why NOT Mammoth?
July 31, 2012, 02:55:10 AM
I'll chime in here as well. I use Mammoth a lot because of the quick turnaround. They're about 200 miles from me, so I can generally get orders to my doorstep within 2 days - even with the cheaper shipping option.

I too, have had issues with their QC in the past. However, as several have already mentioned, Blake has always gone out of his way to make sure the issues are resolved. Sure, in a perfect world, the orders would be correct in the first place. But, as long as the mistakes are resolved in a timely manner (which they always are), I can't complain.

Very nice professional build MG!

I like the idea of doing the drill template and graphics at the same time too. I've been doing two separate steps - no idea why I never thought of that.

Very nice! Love the name too.

Thanks guys.

I ended up using 1n270's per Brian's doc - actually I think they are NTE equivalents from Mouser. I was going to try a few different germaniums, but I'm pretty happy with the sound as is. The LED bezel is from Mammoth - it has a round retaining clip on the back to hold the LED in place.

Build Reports / Sunking

So, I managed to avoid the hype as long as I could. I bought a Sunking board from Gaetano a couple weeks ago, and I'm pleasantly impressed with the sound of this thing.

Not the most impressive enclosure but I was proud that it worked the first time I plugged it in.

Found my problem - had the fat and lvl pots swapped. For someone who spent the first 3 yrs of college as an EE major, I certainly make some embarrassing mistakes. Thanks guys for your time. MG you were on the right track.

I noticed that R6 was 47K rather than 470K in the previous version. Maybe nothing but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks MG-

I suspected that wasn't normal, just wanted to confirm.

Yes, I have done the "biasing" with the trimpot. And yes, I have 9v everywhere that the schematic says I should have 9v and 18v everywhere that I am supposed to have 18v. Also tried another set of J201's and a set of 2n5457's just for grins - same result. Going to throw one more part at it and swap the FAT pot, then I'll start with an audio probe.

Tech Help - Projects Page / FatPants question
May 16, 2012, 04:55:48 AM
Hi all,

Has anyone built the new FatPants that could maybe share their voltages on Q1 & Q2. Mine works, but all of the gain is bunched up in the last 10 degrees of the "fat" pot rotation (4:00-5:00). Cranked full out with the volume and fat maxed and the body switch on, I get just above unity gain. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Mike

Audio/Video Demos / Re: MKII and MKIII
April 25, 2012, 03:55:25 PM
Thanks Paul. And yeah, those caps from C to B were to smooth out the high-end and some of the hiss. It worked pretty well. Before I added them, it was almost too much - especially with my Strat and AC15.

Sounds great Paul. You got better sounds out of it than I ever did on that first demo, but it sounds fantastic after the cap change. I'll have to make a note of that if I ever build another one. Nice work indeed!

The flat side should be the emitter, middle pin is the base, and the other is the collector. Socket them just in case. The first FTM clone I built I put them in backwards and had to flip them.

Yep, it was there. Much thanks Keefe!

Tech Help - Projects Page / EgoDriver - older version
January 29, 2012, 11:05:27 PM
Does anyone happen to have the old PDF instructions for the EgoDriver (pre Sept '11) - or is there a section of the forums for retired build docs? I'm catching up on some builds and just noticed that this one is different from the board that I have.

Thanks!

My vote goes for the Boneyard, Univibe, and the two muffs.
