Open Discussion / Delay expression jack for Feedback
April 14, 2015, 12:29:16 PM
I'm thinking of adding an expression jack for the feedback pot of a delay but instead of using a typical expression pedal I want to just do a momentary switch that ramps up the brightness of an LED that drives an LDR. I'm thinking of hacking the detune part of the multiplex circuit for the expression pedal and probably adding pots for ramp up and down speed and maybe depth. Is there any reason this wouldn't work? I know, I'll probably have to experiment but I don't have the delay together yet so I'm just curious if anyone has tried something similar.

Open Discussion / What mammoth giveth...
April 03, 2015, 07:36:40 PM
So in my mail today a bubble envelope shows up with... 2 2n5457 from mammoth electronics. I think the last time I ordered those from the, probably a year ago, they forgot to send the 2 they had ordered. I seem to recall them replacing them soon after so I guess its 2 free 2n5457s for me! Too bad it wasn't a random 1590BB arriving in the mail box...

Open Discussion / AD 80 kit ebay
March 25, 2015, 04:25:43 PM
I stumbled across this on ebay, it's just the pcb and mn3005. Just curious if anyone else has seen this or bought from this guy before. http://m.ebay.com/itm/121585724367?nav=SEARCH

I've stumbled upon the opportunity to trade some pedals for a Northern Guitars 1970's telecaster copy. I haven't come across a ton of info on these but I've been wanting a Tele lately and this looks like a nice guitar. I'm trying to gauge what it is worth to make an appropriate trade. Any info is appreciated. Here is the post I found it on. http://nmi.craigslist.org/msg/4940710111.html
I'm not under the illusion that this is some vintage classic or something like that and it has some extra holes in the headstock where tuners have been changed out it looks like. It just looks like a cool guitar.

I talked to a guy that builds electric guitars with standard pups and a piezo pup with a stereo jack, he wants to send the piezo signal to amp A and the other signal to amp B. I think he only needs one on at a time but wants to be able to switch them silently with no noise coming from the inactive amp/pup. Is this more complicated than essentially an A/B switch box?

Odd situation. Lowering my guitar volume to 7ish creates a buzz but only with SHO going into super judge. No buzz clean, no buzz with either engaged on its own. It's not really a problem as it's very specific It just seems odd. If anything I could use it as a noise generator and "play" the tone by moving my guitar vol back and forh ;D

Just wondering if anyone has come across any interesting projects that cheap pickups. I removed a set from a squier strat and It doesn't seem like its worth selling them, I figure I should do something with them. If nothing else maybe I'll use them in a cigar box guitar.
Is it possible to get good results taking them apart and rewinding?

I feel like I've built dozens of overdrive pedals but they keep disappearing... I think I have one finished one around right now. Does anyone else have this problem? For some reason OD just seems to be the pedal I sell to fund the next parts purchase or the pedal that a friend really has to have. Then the thought process is... Meh, I'll just build another one, it's just an OD... But I never seem to have more than one to choose from myself. Life is hard sometimes. 8)

Open Discussion / Mood ring questions
March 17, 2015, 11:16:42 PM
I just put together a mood ring. It sounds great but I'm not certain it is acting 100 percent normal. The main thing I noticed is that it goes into oscillation quite easily with the dwell setting at less than halfway CW. On the same issue, the dwell doesn't seem to get very short settings at all. Maybe this is all part of the design I just want to make sure.

Open Discussion / West Coast Pedal Board promo
March 17, 2015, 01:48:56 PM
They are offering a "Demo Rock" board for the cost of shipping ($15), I figured I would try it out but I upgraded to the 10x7 version for $10 extra. Maybe I can make a 1590A board out of it or something, if nothing else it will be good for demo pics/vids and portable for taking to show off a pedal or two. I'm not affiliated I just saw someone post this on another forum and it seems like something a few people may be interested in here.

I'll post my results when it arrives.

Build Reports / Pedal beautification project
March 13, 2015, 01:59:02 AM
I sold this pedal and the guy wanted it rehoused. It was in an old RadioShack UHF amplifier box

I went with the ARcher name for the new box.

I used a clear waterslide decal. I added the enclosure on opposite angles for a sort of diagonal crosshatch look and I think it looks really good!

Open Discussion / That moment when you realize...
March 08, 2015, 03:05:11 PM
That you don't actually have 2 broken amps but rather probably just a cold solder joint in your guitar wiring after tearing apart one amp multiple times and racking my brain as to what could be wrong.

Build Reports / Giant Hogweed!
March 08, 2015, 03:46:29 AM
Drolo's excellent Giant Hogweed! I hacked the graphics from google images. For some reason I keep messing up the label of the controls... There is always a few that are too close to the knobs or the markings are too small... This one isn't too bad. I was going to go with green and cream colored knobs but I think this scheme looks pretty good!

I built it in a 1590C which is a really tall 1590bb. Lots of room in there, I almost felt guilty not sticking another circuit in there...
This circuit is killer! Between this and the Super Judge, it's been a while since I've just flat out not wanted to put down the guitar. It's in these moments when you really remember what you build for. After a while you lose some excitement for firing something up the first time but then something comes along that's just so damn cool.

Super judge! Epic etch by dminner! Complete with glowing eye force powers!

I even managed reasonably clean guts! Even though I had no output at first as I hooked the input to the switched contact instead of the tip. These jacks are confusing...

Open Discussion / This should be common sense but...
March 07, 2015, 06:23:51 PM
Since I didn't learn from others experiences, maybe someone will learn from mine. DON'T BUY 3PDTs directly from china on ebay... EVER!!! haha even if they are only $1.60 a piece. I did go into it thinking meh... if they suck I haven't spent that much on them. I've installed in the last few weeks and one failed already adn the other is noisy when switching. I figured I would go file a complaint with ebay not thinking I'd get anything out of it but... the transaction disappeared from my history... the seller is probably now selling under a different name. So anyway I'm sure someone else will come along and do the same thing even though it is common knowledge that its a bad idea but if I prevent 1 person from pulling the trigger... the small hit I'm taking won't be in vain.

Open Discussion / Does anyone use D shaft pots?
March 06, 2015, 06:55:47 PM
I'm wondering where to get some as I placed a mouser order with a bunch of different knobs not realizing most of them are D shaft knobs. I suppose mouser would be the place to get them. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Build Reports / Test setup upgrade!
March 06, 2015, 03:02:58 AM
Ok so it's still not much... But it has bypass and on board power jack now,!
It was in the same house before but it just had jacks with wires for in, out, ground. I used to Hooke the power jack right up to the breadboard. Yup I'm moving up! Now I can compare to clean tone, adjust for unity gain, etc

Open Discussion / NTD!!!
March 04, 2015, 03:46:59 PM
The snap on truck comes by my work once a week and I picked up a few things today! (I love that my job gives me a tool allowance!)
A set of flush cutters which are great (but always seem to disappear... this is my second pair they turn up eventually but it can't hurt to have backup). A magnetic alligator clip stand, seems like it will be pretty useful, I might buy one for home if I like it enough. Finally I picked up a set of allen wrenches. These seem to come in handy (and also tend to go missing from time to time)...

I'm sure you would mostly get wacky sounds but I'm surprised I haven't seen this anywhere other than on the Clari(Not) though maybe that just does it so well everyone just builds it? I'm planning on doing some breadboard experimentation but I was just curious if there are any other projects/knowledge out there? Maybe a few reasons why not to do it so I can just go against them anyway and find out for myself hehe  8)
Or, applying an envelope filter to repeats only might be cool? I don't know, I'm going to go to the lab and see what I can cook up.
