General Questions / Re: Schematic questions

Lol, yeah, don't use a potato, we saw how that turned out in Portal.

Sure, I totally agree, it's good to know what these things signify.  Just offering an alternative 'quick start' if you want to just follow the schematic by numbers.

If it's the pcb layout and soldering, etc, that you enjoy, maybe there is another area of diy electronics that you can dive into for a while, rather than more pedals?  Bonus points if your wife had a hobby that you can create a pcb for her to help with some part of it.

Or...get into eurorack synth.  There's plenty of scope for endless building of modules, and they don't look like they take up so much room once they are all slotted into a rack 😅

Another way to look at is that you just need to join up all the things with the same label.  It could be called "banana" instead of "VA" and it would do the same thing electrically.   ;)

As Mauman explained, there are all sorts of conventions for what these things mean usually...but when it comes down to it, they're labels.

Open Discussion / Midnight Oil concert (attempt 2)
October 01, 2022, 11:11:58 PM
A few months back I went to a Midnight Oil concert, but it got cancelled before the band started due to extreme weather.

Last night they were back in town to make up for it.  It has been raining all week here, and was up til about an hour before the band came on, but then we had a lovely clear night for the gig.

It was a good show!  They can still rock.  Peter Garrett dancing moves never fail to impress, even if he's almost 70.

I reckon the average age of the audience was about 45.  There was an elderly lady on a walker frame that set up in front of me, I kid you not.  She knew all the songs and had a great time.

Some interesting moments where the lead guitarist sat down and did a jazz piano solo for about 3 minutes in the middle of a song...and they had a saxophone accompany on some songs.  Pete had some good rants between songs about Putin, King Charles, and politics in general.

Anyway, it was a good night out and I'm glad I got to see them one last time.

We caught the support band "King Stingray" as well, they were good too.

Open Discussion / Re: PCB fab options…

I use Elecrow, which is pretty much the same deal as the other ones you mention.  I think they make their profit by doing things in bulk - it's not just your board that they are producing, they will be doing a heap at once.  Elecrow also makes their own products, sells components, etc.  so I guess the PCB making is just part of their business.

I looked into getting some made here in Australia, and much the same as OSHPark, the prices are much higher locally.

Not sure if that helps!

Nice.  The UV prints really do look classy.

Yes, my teenage son had spinal surgery about a year ago.  But that was due to a bike crash, he broke vertebrae in upper back.  So possibly not the same sort of thing you are looking at?

He's made a full recovery, was up and walking about 3 days after surgery, and out of hospital after a week.  No ongoing issues, except that he still likes downhill mountain biking.

just yesterday spent 4 hours in the hospital with him, just a concussion this time.  Ffs.

Put me down as a definitely maybe... I'll see if I can sort getting that time free.  I think that's Monday 10am here, which is perfect except for that pesky thing called 'work' getting in the way.

Edit: ok, I'll sort something with work, make me a 'yes'

That's wonderful!  I've been enjoying the LMNC videos lately, I definitely think you need the smoke machine mod.

Nice, I love the theme.

I think someone needs to do a spaceballs pedal with controls labelled "Bleeps", "Sweeps" and "Creeps".

This might be a good time to try an "audio probe"...easy to build, and you will be able to trace through the the schematic following the audio until it disappears.  That will hopefully narrow down the area with the issue.

Would the header sockets and pins you get for things like Arduino be too tall for what you need?  (I tend to use them for stuff, I can do some measurements if you need)

Yeah maybe?  Will depend on when "office hours" for your side of the planet works out for me.

J1 and J2 at the top of the board are simply connected to J1 and J2 at the bottom of the board.  They are to make it easier to do top mounted jacks.

If you want to connect to a test rig, and not wire up a stomp switch yet, I'd suggest you use the connections at the bottom of the board labelled In and Out.  Ignore the J ones for now, until you are putting things in the box.

General Questions / Re: Identifying polarity.
June 04, 2022, 09:41:19 PM
I find I have to use a magnifying glass to identify pin 1 on some of those tiny chips.  There may be a tiny little dimple that you can't see without magnification.

Once I identify it, I mark the pin with red pen, so I don't forget or get it backwards 20 seconds later.
