I can confirm that, following the schematics we can find.
Replacing those two resistors we can't change too much the sound. Actually, we can say that there's no audible difference between a TS9 and a TS808, except the tolerance of the parts, especially the pots because the higher tolerance.
I saw sometime someone to add, on its Tube Screamer clone, a toggle switch to pass from TS9 to TS808.

But, I have to add something about the two resistors. There's no important difference in the effect schematic about gain and equalizing, theorically. But changing those resistors I think that the output impedance change, this could make the amp, or the pedals after the TS, sounds a bit different.

And we can't forget that the TS9 has a different switching system that exclude the "driving parts" leaving the input and output buffers always on. (The TS808 is simply true bypass).
I don't know if that switch system is totally transparent, maybe it is, so the only difference is just that two resistors, that change the output impedance.

I wait some others technical opinions about this. ;D

General Questions / Re: And now a fuzz into a 1590A

I have a pair of Lumberg and the 1590A box, meanwhile I can try to find the right position into the box.
Enclused jack, do you mean the Boss style? I find in my shops some a bit bigger, I'm not sure I can use it.
I can use film box cap, and the electrolytic low profile.

I don't know if your fuzz is the right for me, but maybe I'll learn how to squeeze the board into this small boxes more than I did until now. ;)
Anyway, I think we will appreciate a demo. :)

Thanks!

About the Hyperion, yes, I find the oscillation pot exactly like you said, it's fun, but I don't know if I really need it.

Meanwhile, I like the KMA Machines Fuzzly Bear version of Bosstone. Is it more aggressive than the original schematic? Anyway, I decided to don't build it now, because I'd build it heavily modded with more pots, so none 1590A box for it.

I like the Hyperion, small, beefy, pretty useble, simple but with a nice range of tone. I still waiting for any other suggestion, there's a lot of fuzz out there, maybe small eoungh for a 1590A box. :P

Tim Escobedo's Harmonic Jerculator would play nice after a buffer. So would this creation of mine: https://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=32464.msg311818#msg311818

Your creation looks really good. But I'm not sure I can manage a layout so big into a 1590A, honestly.
What jacks there are in that box? Lumberg? I used open frame jack, but I can't go with the board over it.
Anyway, do you have any demo?

The SRS EQ exciter is a HUGE fuzz in a tiny form factor. The EQ knob has a super wide synth-like range. It's probably my favorite fuzz.

The SRS EQ Exciter sounds good enough, it's nasty and aggressive like the fuzz I want, and the tone control is nice. But I would like a version with Gain control, too, and I guess I find a layout small enough with all the three pots. I'll put it into my list. ;)

Fuzzstainer with the bias internal, this layout will fit in a 1590A:

Orphan Fuzz (Orpheum/Mosrite hybrid):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qysie5c0mlfquk6/Fuzzstainer%201590A.pdf

Alex Freas's Boss T-Bone (Bosstone, slight octave and it's a little unruly and gated):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/60dtwaulhy8kjlw/Boss%20T-Bone.pdf

I can probably dig you up some more but those are the less polite ones.

Midwayfair, I think you missed to link the Orphan Fuzz document and linked twice the Fuzzstainer. ;)
Anyway, I don't know if I like the Orpheum Fuzz, and about the Mosrite, maybe once I'll built the stock version. So, I think I'll leave it out, for the moment, but waiting the right document link, please, if you want. Thanks.

I found your demo of the Fuzzstainer, good job, but It's not the kind of fuzz I'm looking for.

I remembered the Boss T-Bone after I started the topic, I have to do again some researches about it, I know there's some version and mods, but I'll included it in my list, though I didn't search a gated or octave fuzz, wating an eventually confirm.

I can reveal the fuzz I have in mind placing it at the first position. :P

(I prefer stripboard than protoboard. Protoboard is ok just in case it's smaller than stripboard layout I can find or I can disegn by myself).

General Questions / And now a fuzz into a 1590A

Hello guys.
After a buffer, a booster, an overdrive, two distortions... it's the fuzz turn. :D
I want to find a stripboard layout small enough to put into a 1590A box of a chaotic and nasty, but still musical and useble, fuzz. At least two control: Fuzz and Volume.
I have one in my mind, but I want to ask you some suggestion. I already have a Bazz Fuss, so I prefer nothing like one-knob-pot fuzz style (DAM, Colorsound...).

Thanks!

I have another problem with Tayda new layout!
I put for mistake in the cart two brand of 10nF green cap (they have two very similar brand of the green caps), now I'm trying to remove one of those but updating the quantity item or the shopping cart don't work, I can't neither reduce the quantity.
I'm not going to place the order now, but I want to remove some items I don't need anymore, and I can't! >:(

I don't ever use Tayda but had a look see and when i looked at the cart there's a small trash can under the 'Subtotal' to delete the item from the cart, worked when i tried, went back and did  try changing the quantity to '0' and that worked as well.
dave

Well, the thing worked after I tried to remove a different item, then every item edit or remove function has worked. It's strange, but at least now it works.

I spoke to them during my 21 day wait for my only order from them, they told me due to covid they closed the warehouse in colorado and are only taking deliveries there tse we can still get our stuff.

In my Country the registered mail was out because the covid, and after ten months it's been restore, but now it says that the time shipping is from 7 to 120 days! I usually received my order within 30 days before that.

I use to fill the cart and write a note with all the components, and for every components the name of the project where I need it.
But since the cart of the Tayda is multi-page is very hard to read it, especially when you have 3, 4... 6... pages. It's hard to check if you have included the 10k resistor without check every page!

How much do you order? Or have they changed the layout? I never had multi page carts. Mind you, I never placed orders bigger then $40, from which I could build 2 pedals, because anything more meant Tayda would ship it in a box, instead of the envelope. And the envelope snuck through customs 99% of the time without getting slapped with import highway robbery. The box on the other hand, customs hell. It was cheaper for me to place 10 orders of $40 with separate shipping then it was to order one giant $400 order and get free shipping as it were. Strange world we live in.

I usually place orders around $40, too.
Since some months the web site layout is changed a bit: the log in form, the account page, the cart page, and some detail page... I visti the web site with my pc, with Win 7 and Ubuntu.
I can see just 20 items for page, and there's no any option to set the number of item for page.
Come on! Don't tell me that it's just me! :o

General Questions / Re: Dr. Boogie in the 2020
April 06, 2021, 02:18:28 PM
I totally solved the oscillation problem with a little mod of the layout, with no changing of the schematic.

It sounds ok and very aggressive, but I would like to have more dynamic without losing gain. Every touch of the string soft or hard give me about the same amount of the gain, and I can't clean up with the volume guitar pot unless I set very low. I remember you that the drain coltage is around 4.7v.
Using a charge pump 18v or more in this circuit, I read, makes the circuit louder and maybe adds distortion, but doesn't give headroom or dynamic.
What do you know about it?

General Questions / Re: Dr. Boogie in the 2020

I'm sure enough my built is ok: every control works, the sound is very good, and the hum is surprising low, at least the max setting I can get before the the circuit starts to squeal.

I replaced the 3.9k with a 39k (it helped a lot of people) and after I set the trimmer I got I guess about the same amount of distortion, indeed I don't know what exactly the difference it does. But the squeal is not completly tamed. I still have some trouble at higher setting of the controls.

I tried to use some piece of shielded wire, in the input, output, between the Treble pot and the Volume pot. I soldered transistors and the Presence cap directly on the board withouth using socket pin. All these don't help too much.
Now I noticed that if put my hands over the circuit almost touching it the squeal get low significantly. I think this is just a shielding problem.

Anyway, with a Boss pedal in front the circuit doesn't squeal anymore.

I could go over, hoping that closing the circuit into the box I solve the problem, in case I will built a jfet type buffer, like my Boss pedal.

I didn't have too much expectations from this pedal, but I have to say that it sounds huge and with tons of gain. The eq, instead, is... a disaster. I'm ready to build another one with an alternative tone section.

Sorry for all the words, I wasn't so clear! ::)
My problem is the oscillations. It squeals when I don't play. Typical. (I tried with battery, but it it's the same).
Probably with the PCB the problema is solved at 99%, but a lot of guys built it on veroboard, in some different layouts succesfully. I would like to do it, too.

Finally, I built the Dr. Boogie board using V2 veroboard layout from this page:
http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2012/03/dr-boogie.html

I'm testing it out of the box. I soldered the jack directly on the input and output wire. I tried shorter wire I can, I twisted the gain wires (shouldn't I?). With the JB jr. pickup to the bridge in my Stratocaster I got oscillating. I got with the other pickup if I rise up some of the pots.
The drain voltages are setted around 4.7v.
I had some parts on sockets, now I have less parts, just the 4.7nF in the power suspply filter, I'm thinking about to change it with a common 100nF. Then I still have on socket pin the much discussed 3.9k, the 1nF in parallel with the trimmer of the third stage, and the bypass 1uF cap in the first stage, maybe I'll use a toggle siwtch for it.

In my first test (the one with a lot of parts on socket pin), after a while and for some minutes I got a sound with not the oscillating.
I prefer build it stock and don't change anything. Maybe I'll solder a 1n5817 in line with the 9v, anyway, but this doesn' tsolve the problem. I could use some shielded wire: input and output. Some other wires?
Do you think the the issue can be solved after the circuit is into the box?
#59
Thanks guys.
Indeed, WormBoy, I was thinking about that bypass cap in the circuits you told.

I'll do like that, If I have to buy a bunch of "audio grade" I could use those, else I'll use what I have in my stock.

Hello, everybody.
Looking at the electrolytics caps I'm using Panasonic or another cheaper brand with a low ESR for the power supply parts. Panasonic has the FC series, that is ok, and has FM series, that even better. I used to buy both.
For audio signal I use Nichicon or Elna, specific audio signal series.

Here's the thing: some circuits (FET based, for example) have some large electrolytic caps going to the ground. It's not power supply, and not even a coupling cap. What kind of cap I should use for it? Low ESR or Audio Signal?

Thanks!
