Open Discussion / Re: What are you playing? (games)

I had FC3 for PS3 and went to try and play it recently and it runs horribly. I did a bit of research (god bless Digital Foundry) and found that running the 360 version on a Xbone actually yealds a smooth running games so did that instead. More so than playing the Classic remasters on the same. Which was bizarre.

Anyhow, in the meantime I started plaing Days Gone and I have to say, after an initial 'yeah ok this is trying to be Horizon Zero Last of Us and it's not quite as good as either', it really started to come together with it's own personality and I'm really enjoying it. Think Sons of Anarchy 28 Days Later and you've got the tone of the game. It's really very compelling.

A rip of the new Tool album. Which is rather excellent. Shame I can't work out how to buy it...

Seems the only thing that was for sale here was the Ltd Ed at £80 (about $100, it was about $40 in the States...) which has sold out. Otherwise it's digital only which doesn't play in my CD player. Which is a tad bloody annoying as someone who owns everything they've turned out on CD.

Glad you're still with us dude.

The Broken Sword series are really rather good. Been playing through 5 on and off for a while now.

Just completed God of War on the PS4. Good grief that's a good game!

Currently playing through Shadowrun Hong Kong again for a change of pace.

I've heard that too, but there's just so much out there to watch that when they completely run out of ideas for season 2 (Lost, Walking Dead, etc) and expect me to waste hours of my life muddling through it, I just abandon the show right there. I really enjoyed the first seasons of all the above, I have no interest whatsoever of revisiting them because their second seasons made me simply not care what comes after them.

QuoteI recently saw the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie, love the books don't know why it took so long to see the movie. Overall it was pretty good. Not as much fun as the old BBC one.

The radio series is utterly brilliant and in a lot of respects, I prefer it to the books (indeed that was my first introduction to Douglas Adams). It's available on CD now (used to have the cassette boxed set of that...). The BBC TV series is easily the closest you'll get to HHGTTG with pictures. The no-budget nature of it just suit the subject matter for some reason. The film, that had a budget, I think it adds a layer of seriousness to it that detracts from the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

Alita: Battle Angel - The subject matter was quite a bit watered down (several characters morals and arcs were quite a bit darker than the films) and over all it was PG-13'd up. That said, it was still an enjoyable film. The effects were utterly stunning and though it crammed a lot of plot into one film I thought it pulled it off well. Personally I'd have preferred it adapted it like the anime and maybe stuck to that season as the plot and tone for the film, but still, it's as good as we could have hoped a Hollywood adaptation to be.

SIcario 2: Soldado - I really rated the original and think that was a masterpiece of cinema in a lot of respects. This is a little more workman-like in execution in comparison and is very much part one of two. Where I mean that the first film stands on its own and this feels more like the first half of a bigger film. I hope they do a part 3 to close it off.

Solo - Yep, got there in the end... Starts badly. I found myself rolling my eyes a couple of times at the beginning. But for some reason I tolerate these things to the end. By the end it was pretty decent. I think were it not for The Last Jedi jading everyone, it might have done better. But it was by the numbers stuff. Which let's face it, is what Disney/Holllywood do. Hell there's a lot of blatant Firefly stuff in there and quite frankly, I'd prefer to just watch that again over Solo.

Chernobyl (series) - A humbling, shocking and horrifying look at what arrogance and ambition can do. I'd like to think this sort of shit doesn't happen now, but it does. It often amazes me that we're all still around... Required viewing.

There was some other stuff but it was while I was house sitting for a friend and it was all Amazon/Netflix stuff. Most of it was shit and left so little impression I can't remember what they were called.

Ge Fuzz Faces look simple, making a good one is not. Sourcing good transistors with decent HFE/Leakage is a serious issue. If you want to make it actually work well, it's worth spending some time biasing it properly also. There's so few decent Ge transistors around these days that it's simply not worth the effort unless someone lucks upon a stash you can go through with a meter. We did, once. There were well over 100 transistors in it. I think we got about 6 pedals out of it that I'd consider to be really bloody good. It took a lot of effort. Add to that that they tend to require inverted power and don't play nice with buffers or wahs...

Stick to Si for fuzz. There are some really, really good ones out there.

Though I've read everything Pratchett wrote, manky is just an ordinary slang word for scruffy/undesirable.

It's actually been made since I made that post, I've just been a bit slack posting it.

Build Reports / Ph'King Wha?! (aka: the Juan Song)
July 12, 2019, 05:53:43 PM
Possibly the most bespoke pedal ever. It's doing some odd stuff, but it's for a very specific installation for regular 4000 mile Phil.

So in the middle of this thing is a DGM3 muff and a Klone, one of them is always on and they're switched externally by a switch box of some description (hence the relay switching from Jason). There's also a momentary switch on the back to test that should you not have that plugged in. Next there's a cocked-wah, with two settings selectable on the centre stomp. They can be pre-set with the trimmers internally. Finally there's Jason's rather marvellous and borderline silent boost. The switch again internal to select flat/treble boost/mid boost. That works somewhat traditionally.

It's a mess of wires inside, but there's a lot going on...

Stage one complete: test, strip, wash/clean, reassemble. It was a bit manky. This has certainly been in a loft for at least 30 years. Workage was a little intermittent. The switches needed attention and the PSU jack probably needs replacing. Kontakt Cleaner was employed copiously and we appear to have a bit of a winner on our hands.

Stage two will be a re-cap (all of three of them) with the jack swappage.

Stage three will be an RGB modification...

Latest Project. Advertised as a 'loft find'. Let the repair/restoration commence. If this one ends up nice, I'll RGB mod it and do some shuffling with the UAV (S-Video) board that's in the Junior, and put that in the 7800, then just composite mod the Jr.

I guess my viewpoint is slightly different on build reports.  I think this place is pretty great about giving positive feedback to folks posting their first builds.  It's fun seeing what somebody new brings to the table; sometimes there are subtle differences, but it's nice to see anything different.

I don't post as many build reports as often as I used to.  Mainly because so much of it is similar to things I've posted in the past.  I've gotten wonderful feedback over the years, but most of the people have seen it multiple times over at this point.  I think that occurs with a lot of the long-timers here.  I am sure people that look at them appreciate the contributions, but there isn't as much to say about it.  That's why it's always cool when there are posts from new folks.

That's true, there are a few of us who have a very set style and tend to build very similar looking pedals. I am certainly guilty of not posting duplicates and odd things that don't do or look much different.

QuoteCan you link to a time when you asked for feedback on a build and didn't get any?

I think I phrased that wrong.  "Comments" would be a better word.

To be fair, I've been single a loooong time... ;)
