Build Reports / Sprout in a 1590a
November 27, 2011, 03:30:22 AM
My first 1590a. I dont think I really appreciated how small these things are until i built this.  Incredible small.

Came together pretty well though i thought.  The graphics are of the piranhna plant from Super Mario.  I was going to do the 1up mushroom but remembered, somebody else actually has already done that!

The space between the in / out jacks was a bit close, but not too clse thankfully. The powder coating gods also crapped on my finishing efforts once again, and the clear coat orange peeled like i've never seen orange peel before.  I probably had it on too thick, i dont know...

Anyway, aside from that, very happy with this one, in finishing, build quality, and effect.

Thanks for looking,
Paul

is it wrong for me to say this color is growing on me?  Its not...a hot pink...its like...a purple-y..color   :-\

Been working on this for like, 6 months now.  Part of 'the list' i started.

This is the 2nd build i've powder coated.  This one also has its issues.  I'm honestly my own worst enemy, if i just listened to people and did what i was supposed to, like fit the dam moisture filter on the end of the gun, i wouldnt have half these issues.  oh well.   I'm learning.

The other obvious issue is the decal.  The clear powder defines the edge of the decal generously. Actually, you can barely see it in the photo, believe me, in real life its got like..1mm edge around it. Not entirely sure why either...can only guess it was the brand...

Oh yeah one last thing, the industrial 3dpt's from Mammoth.  I believe they are supposed to be used with a PCB?  Without the pcb, they are a HUGE pain to solder.  The lug holes are microscopic. There are 2 advantages though that i can see with using them. They are slightly smaller then the blue 3pdt's.  They also have a metal washer instead of the white ones, which i must say, i really like!

Ok, thats it.  Thanks for looking :)

Build Reports / Squeeze Orange -> Receive Lime Juice
November 04, 2011, 06:50:55 AM
Hi all,
Disgusted with the paintjob of one of my earlier builds and eager to give my new powder coating stuff a bash i decided to refinish an old orange squeezer build i made when i started.  It was about build number...5 or 6 approximately.

The new powder coating job i did was actually pretty crappy.  Made so many errors.  However, it still blows the pants off that yellow paint.  Have a look at it...I swear its enamel.  Cant expect much for a 3 dollar can of paint.  Anyway, those days are over (hugs powder coating gun affectionately).

Of course, i cant change the rubbish layout that i did with this all those years ago...ATLEAST 2 years... :)  Just a cosmetic fix up really.  If i only i could go back in time and talk some sense into that young wild eyed pedal builder.  "in out jacks with a pot in the middle...THINK ABOUT IT HALF WIT".

Everyone loves a before and after, so here it is.
Thanks for looking

Build Reports / Completed Uproar - Suhr Riot
October 22, 2011, 06:59:55 AM
Hi all,
Another one checked off the list.  I had some graphics for this one, simple stuff, a picture of a molotov and labels.  The decal didnt work out so good. Long story short, i scraped it and went with stickers.  Stickers are my "CBF'ed" option no doubt, but i actually like how the whole thing turned out with this one.  The haphazard labeling is deliberate, i wasnt drunk...maybe...?

The main issue with this one was too tight around the dials.  You cant read the top row very well.  I could get the slim style mammoth knobs to fix that though. That and the decal were the two main problems.

First time i've used a 125b and turned out to be a good choice.  You can fit a car with the doors open inside one of those.  I decided to include a batt snap with this build for that reason.  Tonnes of room!

And finally, how does it sound?  Love it!  So glad i built it.  Its got some balls on it, ill give it that.  Definitely my sort of distortion.  I like heavy, growling distortion.  Not scooped mids "metal" distortion.  Appeals to me more.  i like all the mods too.  Sometimes you get mods that dont make much difference to the sound or do bad things.  The Uproar mods are all worth it if you ask me.  I didnt do the facemelter mod though, starting to wish i had of.

Thanks for reading the novel :)

Build Reports / Honeybee - Yellowshark
October 19, 2011, 12:08:05 PM
That bee picture cracks me up...look at the expression on that little bastards face...

Not convinced about the yellow knobs from mammoth.  A little annoyed actually, they are sort of a flouro yellow in person / dont look the same as the picture...Diffuse LED with this one as well, like the boneyard.

Of the 30-40 builds i have built so far, this has to be one of my favourite low gain pedals.  Its really well balance and has a unique sound.  Definitely recommend it if your after a low gain overdrive, its great!

Thanks for looking and thanks to madbean for taking the time to share all these great builds!

Finished the Boneyard and the yellow shark (yellow shark report to follow once the knobs arrive).  Some surgeon-like wiring with the boneyard in a BB but wasnt as bad as i expected. Went with diffuse LEDS, as you can see in the photos, they are flat.  Paint job was a bit different too. Sprayed it with my dads spraygun and arylic.  The arcylic scratches very easy before gloss, but goes on really evenly.  Id definitely use it again.  The effect sounds good, not like i've used it much.  Too busy building stuff  :-\

Thanks for looking

Build Reports / Os Mutantes - Completed build #3 of 13
September 11, 2011, 12:00:36 PM
This ones the last one for a while, the fuzzydice (deadpool).  Not sure what a 'fuzzydice' has to do with it...I used 2n3904's instead of 2n3565 as i couldnt get a hold of any.  I might end up doing a video of this one as there doesnt seem to be much on youtube.  A wild and crazy fuzz.  I find it needs some time and patience before you start hearing the beauty of the effect.
Thanks for looking!

Build Reports / Serendipity - Completed build #2 of 13
September 05, 2011, 11:25:47 AM
2nd completed build is a Serendipity or as i have called it, the Dragon Drive.  Another tight build, for me anyway, those 4 knobbers in a 1590b test my wiring neatness. That said, turned out ok i think.  I might look at getting some replacement, low profile knobs, something not so tall, as they make it harder to read the text. I've got one more ill be doing this week, and then im going to have a break.  I need it :)
Thanks for looking,
Paul

Build Reports / Lavache - Completed build #1 of 13
September 05, 2011, 11:18:13 AM
as the title suggests, i have a few madbean projects all going at once.  Sending me slightly crazy but i'm on the home stretch now.

The first one is a Lavache in a 1590b with the boost switch.  No room for a battery of course, but i dont use them anyway.  It was a tight squeeze, wouldnt recommend it for noobs.  Bit messy inside, but with this sort of tight build, my neatness tends to go out the window. :)

Thanks for looking!

Build Reports / Glitterrattii Overdrive
June 05, 2011, 12:00:37 PM
Hi all,
Built a couple of these a while ago, one for me, one for my dad.
Also included the 'upskirt' shot. As you can see, lots of room inside, enclosure is a bit oversized, but what can i say, im lazy :-)

Hi All,

Built the Dinky Drive.  Interesting overdrive.  I find the bass / treble has alot of unusable range, however, as the proud owner of an original hot cat 30r, i can say the eq in that thing can also be a bit tricky too...I did a quick test comparing the hot cat clean channel + dinky drive vs the hot cat gain channel (gain on about 1/3) and got a...sort of comparable tone out of it.  Let me know if you want a sound sample.

It was a bit tricky fitting it all in a B case. Got there in the end.

Anyway heres a photo of the build.

Bottom photo is a photo of 'the growing family'  ;)

Tech Help - Projects Page / dinky drive pots
September 30, 2010, 12:03:21 AM
Hi all,

just built the dinky drive.  I'm trying to find a place to get the correct pots as i temporarily just put on whatever i had on hand that was closest.

Cant seem to find 1MA pots.  well, not from the places i usually order from.

My choice is either 1MB or 500kA.  Which do you think would be better suited?  I have B on the bass pot at the moment.  It goes from no bass to heaps, in about 1mm of turn....

Did i just answer my own question?

(Thanks for any help)

Build Reports / Krankasaurus with bass cut mod
September 17, 2010, 01:15:40 PM
Hi all,

The krankasaurus is about...number 20 on the build list so far for me.  Some pedals are of 'so-so' use.  This ones going to get a work out :) Bass cut mod adds a bit of extra versatility to the effect and if you have the space i recommend it.

Thanks madbean.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Krankasaurus Not Kranking
September 13, 2010, 02:59:17 AM
Hi all,

Having a bit of an issue with my krankasaurus. The effect sounds right, the tonal quality is pretty much right.  But the drive on full, doesnt sound anywhere near as heavy / distorted as what i've heard on other clips.  What lead me to believe that it wasn't my ears playing tricks on me, was last night i was playing around with some of my clones, i plugged my lovepedal into the front of the krankasaurus.  Turned the level up on the lovepedal to halfway (which is pretty loud) and had no clipping on the lovepedal, just boosting the volume, and the krankasaurus really came alive!  I was impressed with how heavy this thing sounded. "Thats more like it!"

I realise increasing the level of an input siganl can have an effect on some distortion / od pedals, but the difference is night and day...and also its just the sound of the krankasaurus.  There is next to no sustain and bugger all drive even with the drive up full. Oh yeah, and i should mention, the volume on this thing is ridiculous...Cant really have it over 1. Have i sacrificed drive for level somehow or is this normal behaviour?

Checked over my components. No errors, only sub i used was the 5.1k res's, i used 5.6k.

Will provide voltages when i get home from work, and a sound clip too might be useful to show you what i mean.

Thanks for reading and any help you can provide thus far.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Krankasaurus - Led Wiring
September 06, 2010, 11:41:16 PM
Hi guys,

Im sure there is a simple answer to this question. I want to incorporate the 2 seperate leds for boost and distortion for the krankasaurus so i can visually see which is on and off.

On the build PDF for the krank, it specifically says, LED wiring is left off, which doesnt help me...(Im not familar with dual 3pdt wiring and have no idea how to do this)

Can anyone assist?

You help is appreciated!
