I was going through some old stuff and it made me think about bands I would probably not know about had my old band not played a show with them. I thought it may be cool to share some lesser know bands that we all heard of this way, if anybody else is down.

It's been well over a decade since I've been in a band that plays shows (unfortunately) so this stuff is all from the early '00s.

First off Trackstar. These guys were a cool mellow band that was just killer live. Two guitars and drums, no bass, great songs. Super nice guys.

Next a band called The Natural History. These guys are still one of my favorite bands from that time. Good straightforward indie rock foot stomping fun. If you like Spoon then you would probably enjoy these guys.

This one really surprised me, The Detachment Kit. I tend to not love heavy stuff, but the riff that starts around the one minute mark blew my mind the first time I heard it live.

Finally this guy, Jason Anderson (also know as Wolf Colonel), he is an amazing performer. Usually plays acoustic solo stuff but occasionally has a band. One of the finest performers I have ever seen. He could play to a hundred people with no mics and keep the room perfectly silent.

Here are a few I've shared a bill with. I doubt I would have discovered any of them otherwise.

Discovered these guys when we walked into a pub one arvo, went to their gigs whenever they came to town, ended up supporting them a few years later.  Unfortunately, they finished up years ago, and they don't have their best stuff up on youtube.

A) Matmosphere & I are clearly about the same age. I used to see Jason/Wolf Colonel like three times a year, as he was forever on tour. Meanwhile, the D Kit was Chicago's answer to Les Savy Fav, so a bunch of us U of Illinois folks were very fond of them. Nice to hear both are remembered!

B) On my last tour, I played gigs with Rick Rude and Palberta. One is like a folksy Built to Spill fronted by a flinty-voiced woman & an impassioned guy; the other is basically the Raincoats (i.e. their music feels like a secret language) if they grew up listening to Erase Errata and the Crainium. Both are magnificent live. (Records are pretty good, too.)

In the interim, I've also played shows with Big Ups & Two Inch Astronaut, who I "knew" but hadn't fully checked out 'til I saw their sets. Both are now RIP, but still great if you're looking for semi-recent wiry post-hardcore in the Jawbox/Rodan/etc. vein. All of the above have Bandcamps, so they shouldn't be too hard to track down.

matmosphere

Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing, I needed some inspiration. I've listened to a good bit already and want to try to listen to the rest this weekend.

Nice, Jason is the best. If you caught him at Schubas in Chicago in 2002 or 2003 (I forget) you might have caught my band playing with him. We did a little touring with him back then.

He is actually doing a cool thing on Instagram right now where he is putting up a new 15 second song all day this month. They have all been pretty good so far.
